despite how cool the 3000GT VR4s were, they had so many goddamn problems that id feel safer and more confident in a land rover discovery.

the AWD system could sometimes malfunction and lock up all tires, and this most often occurred at highway speeds. also, mitsu had a habit of plugging their ears and pretending nothing was wrong and no recalls would need to be issued.
>>
>>17752041
My ex had one of the pre-facelifts GTO's, 4th gear exploded cruising on the motorway, 6 weeks later Mitsi gave her a new box. 2 days after that was installed, the flywheel shattered.
They're a nice car, a bit heavy and eat gas but not too bad. I'd just never buy one except on Gran Turismo.

Yes, it's FWD. Yes, it may be a bit slow and heavy. I don't care. It's beautiful. I'd buy 5 in 5 different colors for each day.

My old CL9 too had a K24 (A3 to be specific) of which I set valve clearances twice while I had it. It indeed had the traditional larger cam lobe between the two default lobes on both cams. And these were designed to be engaged, as did with my car, at 7000rpm. 500rpm before rev limit.
I'll wager your mom's never driven you around at 7000rpm to know any different, Mr know it all.
>>
>>17756650
Having said that I will concede those Accord Euros are an absolutely spectacular mid size sedan and better than anything Mitsubishi made of similar size short of an Evolution or RalliArt Lancer... Infact, apart from the power deficit, I'd rate the garden variety CL9 over the RalliArt.

Sadly as with any alloy headed iron motor, if it only marginally overheats, the best case scenario is a blown head gasket. On another note, friend of mine has a later model SOHC 24v 3.5L that's done just north of 440,000 unopened kilometres, although he's been avoiding the valve stem seals for the last year...

Over here in Ausfaggot land it's usually cheaper and easier to simply buy a second hand motor... With the later NL (usually gen 2.5 blister guard) its easy enough to swap in a later model 3.8

>Not unless you wanna run at the top end
...the top 500rpm as governed by the limiter? Pretty useful when second gear is twice as tall as first, dropping you back under 4000rpm. It was only good for achieving a heady marketable peak number on paper. Shame as its otherwise a fantastic engine.
>>17756793
Ah, there you go. The 4D56 really was a bucket of snot. Literally an Astron with a diesel head and high compression pistons. The 2.8l 4M40 is the bee's knees with diesel Montys.

I'd rate the luxury pack GLS on par with a Sahara J80 Landcruiser, just a bit smaller.
The Montero is basically a Prado size wagon with a Landcruiser sized drivetrain.
>>
>>17756848
Isn't peak power without sacrificing the bottom end drivability the whole point of variable valve timing? No soccer mom is ever going to redline their econobox
>>
>>17756848
>>17756785
3 cam profiles let you have a smoother transition between profiles so you don't have that sudden jolt of it kicking in but still get the same power gains
Honda was working on a continuously variable cam profile, no idea what happened to that

>but what's the point in an econobox
There isn't any. We should all just stick to old designed that chock up at the higher end right?
>>
>>17756875
>Isn't peak power without sacrificing the bottom end drivability the whole point of variable valve timing?
Maybe if the peak power is actually usable as opposed to flashing up for a fraction of a second to attain a dyno number... Unless you enjoy showing off the factory figures in your handbook more than driving the thing.
The only thing i-VTEC does is bump you into the rev limiter quicker than expected.
>>
>>17756901
There's only two profiles you clown.
>>
>>17753296
I have the Sedan 09 Lancer. Lancers aren't fast, but they're relatively beefy in the engine for their size and weight so they'll climb a hill or tow a light load just fine. It's also a pretty standard DOHC engine and CVT transmission so repairs won't really cripple you if needed.

Mileage is pretty decent, I get 7 litres/100km if I'm driving without heavy traffic. It's a pretty featureless interior and doesn't have a lot of nice little extras, but all the standard quality of shit like power windows, aircon, heating etc is obviously there. Not a bad car for what I paid. Definitely a capable and economical commuter that looks a little more special than a Corolla.

>The performance i-VTEC system is basically the same as the DOHC VTEC system of the B16A's; both intake and exhaust have 3 cam lobes per cylinder. However, the valvetrain has the added benefit of roller rockers and continuously variable intake cam timing
>>
>>17757616
uh, yeah? And?
>>
>>17757622
>3 cam lobed per cylinder for intake and exhaust
>somehow only a single cam jump according to you

I think you're thinking about the economy i-VTEC system
>The economy i-VTEC K20A3/K24A4 engines is more like the SOHC VTEC-E in that the intake cam has only two lobes, one very small and one larger, as well as no VTEC on the exhaust cam
>>
>>17757633
>3 cam lobed per cylinder for intake and exhaust
Are you implying those three lobes have their own profiles?
And I'm referring specifically to the "i-VTEC" system on the K24A3.
>>
>>17757640
It's almost as if the K series is a DOHC engine and has a separate came for the intake and exhaust valves or something...
>>
>>17757640
You mean the economy variant of i-VTEC that only has camlobes on the intake side and no VTEC on the exhaust side?
>>
>>17757651
Er, my K24 definitely had VTEC on both intake and exhaust camshafts... Three lobes on each camshaft per cylinder, with the two outers identical default lobes with the single middle performance lobe.
Again, that's on each camshaft.
And again, there's only one single phase to the performance lobe. Not a staged "one then two valve" jump.
...Where does this motor fit on the scale?
>>
>>17757678
So something like this >>17757533?

You know there are multiple intake valves per cylinder right?
>low rpm, one valve cracks open
>mid rpm, both valves crack open
>high rpm, both valves open fully
Wow, 3 stage VTEC

its a copy of the e39
>>
>>17757688
>So something like this
"Like", yes. Exactly, no. The locking pins are literally engaged across all three rocker arms on each each camshaft in one single movement.
Again; up until 7000rpm, all valves follow default lobes. Over 7000rpm, all VTEC pins are engage and all valves follow the middle lobe. Where is that mysterious third stage?
>>
>>17757945
High lift lobes are active at 6000rpm
single lobe is active under 2200rpm
>>
>>17757941
>copy

More like E36 coppied this
>>
>>17757979
e36 and e39 and z3 were designed by a japanese guy he mightve done mitsubishis i dunno
>>
>>17757960
Given the valves are actuated by a roller rocker that is in contact with the default lobes, I don't see how that's possible unless the rockers magically disappear at idle, only to reappear at 2200rpm.
>>
>>17758002
Yes anon they magically disappear

>VTEC engaging at 7000rpm
>when several variants of the K24 have 7100rpm redlines

How does it feel to not have any idea what you're talking about?
>>
>>17758006
You have no other explanation?
>>
>>17758035
You won't listen to any explanation so I'm not going to waste my energy any further
>>
>>17758029
Oh yes, mine redlined just after 7000rpm with the limiter coming in at 7500rpm. That was my whole point you fucking mouth breather.
>>
>>17758067
And you still think VTEC engages at 7000 rpm? How stupid are you?
>>
>>17758067
I'll correct myself, it was engaged at 6000rpm. Which given the wide gearing was near on useless.
>>17758041
I've been listening to you misinterpreting your own copy/paste posts, and that's about it.
Still care to explain how my engine dropped a valve under 2200rpm? As I'm genuinely interested to see how I missed that. Given that when you hand rotate said engine both camshafts turn, with all lobes being fixed, with all default lobes running the fixed rockers that in turn open every single valve.
I'm aware Honda used such a VTEC system you're trying to describe in some of their motorcycles for a brief period (namely some VFR800s), but that is not the case in this particular example.
>>
>>17758109
Hondata flash drops VTEC engagement to 4500rpm, stop being a mangina
>>
>>17758067
you're fucking stupid if you think vtec engages at 7k RPM

lmao

I approve. If I had access to mspaint id post one but Id Daily an EVO 8 MR, weekend warrior a built 6G75 MIVEC AWD boosted 3g eclipse, and garage baby and car show the fuck out of a Pride and Joy Evo 4.5 coupe

>>17757314
Excellent. Evo 4-6 a best

Also I love the half educational half shitposting MIVEC/VTEC banter that makes half this thread
