Buy a CB500F.
It's got similar styling, if that's what you're into; is tailor-made for commuting; gets 80+mpg; is cheap to work on; reliable in the meantime; and a whole bunch of other reasons, peripheral to your concerns.
Not to say you'll regret starting small, but when you discover you WANT to ride places, you won't be limited by the bike.

2000s or newer.

I commute on two wheels and I like to do some spirited riding. I only do a couple long rides a year.

I'm looking upgrade from my current bike and these 1150s seem to tick the right boxes. I'd like to know if anyone here has dealt with em. I don't have a hard on for the BMW branding or anything so other suggestions are welcome.

>are any of the regular maintenance items difficult or expensive?
Regular maintenance is easy and normally priced.
>any special tools required?
I only use normal screw drivers, two 1/2" ratchet sets with sockets and a 1/4" ratchet set with bits to do the majority of work. A small (you only need up to 110Nm) torque wrench and a 3/4" ratchet for the oil filter socket is a nice addition, but not really needed if you don't have the money.
>how is the corrosion resistance? do the plastics and rubbers withstand allweather use and harsh UV?
Mine is now 17 years old, parked outside. It has some surface rust, especially where it's exposed to salt. Only plastic part that keeps failing is the spark plug cover . Lost 3 already and they're ~€15 a piece, but it will run fine without them.
>any unexpected failures?
Mine had the exploding drive shaft (end drive was fucked), that's about it. The rest of the failures are expected, like some leaking seals, brake calipers and master cylinder need a rebuild etc.
>how is the stock injection? ie transitioning on and off the throttle, does it pull from really low revs cleanly?
It's pretty choppy, the engine doesn't help with that. You get used to it and only notice it really with someone on the back, who will slam into you if they don't hold on tight. It has enough low end torque, never problems there. I can even start riding on the clutch in 3rd.
>has your final drive or brake servo failed yet?
Final drive, yes. I don't have a brake servo, mine has no ABS. It's best to have one without ABS unless the POs used it every single day, but then the mileage is seriously high (>200k)

Thanks for the detailed answer. That's a lot more conventional than I was expecting. I mean any bike over 10 years old you can expect some minor fixes here and there.

The other bikes on my shortlist would be:
>airhead RT
>buell xb12xt
>moto guzzi lemans
but they too have (plenty of) their own issues. One thing I am learning is that any bike has its issues, no one bike will do everything perfectly, and that good maintenance is worth more than anything else you can do to a bike.
>>
>>17747780
A good thing too look for is what problems they have. A BMW R1150 has a lot of them, some might be deal breaking.
But if you know the failures, you can be ahead of them and replace things before they actually fail. It might cost a little bit more time, but if it were to go it would have costed more time and maybe end a trip.

When will Honda get their head out the ass and retcon the NC700 as the new transalp?
Seems like an easy way to get money from those of us who'd want something similar without having to pay x-adv money

they are mostly polyester and nylon, only 10% genuine leather. Can it go in the washing machine?

And can it go in the dryer as well?

>>
>>17747948

>>
>>17747955

I think the problem is that these gloves take forever to air dry, I'm talking more than a week, so bacteria grows in the dark moist environment, especially in the finger tips.

I'm thiking of doing my first ironbutt ride soon.

Anyone done one before? Got any good tips/info? I will be starting at the entry level, the saddlesore 1600k.
>>
>>17748315
Stay hydrated, when stopping for fuel (around 2 hours) also walk a bit and eat a little.
Get some music to listen to.
>>
>>17748315
Need at least 4 gps's if you're going to make it. Have fun lad, I did 1300km in under 24 hours when I wasnt even trying and on a route not great for long distance (traffic, going through lots of small towns, lots of road construction, ect). I imagine 1600km on a decent route would be a walk in the park.

Just drink water, make sure to eat something, and have some music or podcasts to keep you entertained. It shouldnt be too tough, its just riding.

Also whos the faggot who banned me for posting an nipple? Now you get two!

I got this KTM so it's super fun.

Honestly, it's terrifying and brilliant at the same time. I haven't fallen for a bike like this since my Hornet. It's so easy to work on too which is useful because lolKTMreliability.

Remember, it will eventually get dark.
And I don't mean get your headlights checked. Pack a sweater and a vacuum Thermos of coffee so you can stay toasty. Pull over whenever the chill comes back, drink more coffee to dialate blood vessels.
Pack a flat repair kit, specific to your tire type.
See if you can find two or more comfortable seating positions and alternate between them. Stand from time to time.
Drink water. I bring a nalgine knockoff to make sure I get a minimum 500ml-hour on hot days.
Take a to go box from any restaurant you stop at. Pack lunch is nice, but bringing real food to the beach is a special feeling.
Drink one small Gatorade per 3 liters water. You need the salts to not-piss every five minutes.
Take dumb pictures for friends, dbt, internet following. It gives you a reason to pull off, stretch, drink water.
Stay off the interstate whenever feasible. Save the boredom for crunch time.

LEARN TO OPERATE A PAPER MAP.

I don't do certified tours, but riding stupid distances is my thing. Questions? Concerns?

My neck veins start pulsating when I hear other people go by reving the shit out of their sport bike or dirt bike fartcannons. It's absolutely fucking annoying, and I do not want to be one of them. If I were you, i would look for bikes that have the sound you want and have plenty of torque. Therefore you wouldn't have to use as much rpm.
So things like the triumph bonneville, ducati monster, moto guzzi v7/v9, suzuki sv 650. Some sort of twin might be the sound you are looking for.
Maybe an fzo7 or something due to the 270 degree crank.
Usually older air-cooled v-twins can give off the sound you are looking for. aka the burble.
The other thing that helps is having a large displacement engine.

Guzzi has hit the states, piaggio uses them and aprilia as one company almost.
Aprilia makes the sportbike/high tech bikes while moto guzzi makes the old-school standard cruiser bikes.
Sometimes I wish moto guzzi would go back to their old days of racing and make things like the moto guzzi daytona.

Time to sperg. You guys are aware that carburetor problems are caused by clogged pilot jets and not dirt/gunk actually inside the body of the carburetor, right? It's funny to see people throw their carbs in these huge acid baths when the actual culprit is just a little screw. Sure, I guess it can't hurt, but it's a false sense of satisfaction. You could clear the two jets and leave the rest dirty and the functionality would be restored just as much.

You can thank Di Tomaso for that. He was over impressed by the Moto Morini, and insisted the small block have Heron heads, which seems to limit the bike to 40HP.

So now your choice is stupidly expensive four valve motors or 400cc-class power in a 2-valve. To their credit, the V7's are marketed to the same buyers (and at a similar price-point) as a 400.

De Tomaso (the company, not the man) did bring us some goodies, like the first cartridge fork. but two different 4-valve designs came and went during those years.

At least the V-9s have an actual motor with real combustion chambers instead of the fucking Heron heads, now they just need to put it into something besides a fucking bobber and there might be a little potential, but I know they won't because that'll butt into Aprilias territory.

Honestly I've always wanted a bike that comes as a "kit"

Base bike is a standard, it has two modes along with that.

It has something simple like a toggle-block that lifts the suspension an inch or so for more clearance offroad, and a set of spoked wheels with knobbies.

Then it also has quick attach minimalist fairings for using it as touring bike.

Depending on what you are doing you can swap wheels/suspension/fairings to fit your needs.
>>
>>17750388
Yeah but they aren't 'transforming' unless you count the adjustable electronics.
Sounds like you just want a sports tourer

Until that happens, Ducati Monsters kind of fit that bill. You can do the upright and forward leaning positions comfortably, it's a damn good bike for going from upright and comfortable one second to dive bombing into corners another.

Maybe there's other nakeds with similar setups but I dunno. I've ridden a few nakeds like the FZ-07/09 and SV650 and they all have you very upright. You can tuck on them, but it isn't comfortable IMO.

They're worse than 400cc scooters in city and worse than any bike on roadway. Waste of money, if you want a scooter get a 400cc max.
if you want a bigger scooter for going fast don't be a fag and get a bike.

It was used on a few race bikes but monoshocks work better and are more rigid so it went nowhere. Note how flexible the design is, and that's bad for handling.

Fuck a Road King, and I'm probably much older than you. Why old people buy heavy bloated bikes is a mystery and likely why relatively few put high miles on them. An aftermarket fairing and bags weigh far less than all the shit on a RK.

I could buy a Road Glide (fixed fairing works better than batwing) for cash but I'll stick with my FXRs. I've ridden both RKs and Road Glides. I can see a Road Glide for interstate touring but I've done that on an FXR with no problem.

If you do buy an RK/RG best deals are used from other old fucks who thought they were wonderful until they lost interest. If they'd bought Dynas they'd likely ride more.

Waze on a smartphone along with a separate GPS is a good combo. Waze is vital for monitoring traffic, road closures and police. GPS acts as backup and lets you scroll forward on Waze for route adjustments.

Solid machines, parts are available, get the factory service manual but Haynes will work.

Change all the fluids (nobody changes fork oil) and inspect it thoroughly.

It should make reliable transportation.
>>

Minor carb problems are usually pilot jets, but many carb problems benefit from dipping, and no, carbs aren't fucking cleaned in acid baths (well, anything stronger than lemon juice) or you'd have no carb.

A pilot jet isn't a screw. It has a screw slot.

Emulsion tubes get foul too, CV diaphragms age and crack, Viton needle tips harden....

Cleaning carbs is easy unless they are buried (Marauder, some Honda V-4s) , corroded (yard sitters, ethanol) or annoyingly complex (Gold Wing).
>>
>>17751310

Check Craigslist for local bike price. Sidecar add about 1500, trailer about 400 but pricing is fucking REGIONAL so check ur region. I'm inna Southeast so my prices are usually low.

It's a nice touring beast. Sidehacks are an acquired taste. Goto sidecar forums for details. This is not a Gold Wing or sidecar forum.
>>
>When the main jet opens
Its like a turbo spooling, but without the noise and so much of a power kick
>>
Are grip puppies gud?

Also is there a cheaper solution to thin as fuck "weight reduction" seats or is it $500 shit all the way down?
>>
>>17752636
There are plenty of un-ridden Gold Wings too.

It's a size and bloat issue. Touring bikes are profitable the more expensive shit the factory hangs on them. Dumb customers like fancy nigshit so they buy too much motorcycle. Just pushing it out of their garage to ride it is a chore so they don't.

I use a 40' shipping container with doors on both ends and ride through. Fuck pushing anything you don't have to. They make great motorcycle garages.

Lifting 3 days post road rash: sensible with fresh dressings or stupid?
>>

Depends on the type of lift. If you are doing bench presses and the rash is on your forearms, that's fine. If you do curls, though, you're stretching the wound and it'll open up and delay healing.

You'll know what's too much when you have a go at any rate, worst you do is just cause it to weep a bit and that'll cost you a dressing.
