Definitely look at Punto II then, maybe a Stilo if you can stretch the budget.
Alternatively some VAG 1.9 TDI from before unit injectors, the 90HP version is p. undedable desu.

I find that old Japanese cars are just as bad, or worse, especially Mazda. Also Fords and non-VW/Audi VAG rust just as well. If you don`t mind other problems, but want a rustproof car, get something French.
