Behind The Wheel (BTW) edition.

Don't be afraid to drive it.

Classic shitbox > modern shitbix

Generic copy/pasta incoming:

>Cars are considered classic at 25 years old, shopping carts not so much.

>Everybody has their own taste, either if it's of age or rarity. Liquor, too.

>Post your classic, your work on it, your clearing stick, and get advice

>Any and all discussion about classics welcome, even Cyrus' fuckin' Corvette

>Any and all classics welcome regardless of nationality, Canadian or American.

>Rust is a bitch, and not for the faint of heart; tread lightly and carry a rum and coke

>You will inevitably spend twice your budget, no exceptions unless you mint your own hash coins
>>
Im taking my firebird on it's first roadtrip today, after installing a horn finally. pls no break

What's a good first classic car, with some modern day merits that hasn't been affected by huge boomer bubble. Really everything semi neat has gone over the moon and back pricewise.

Located in Europe btw. Only thing I can think of is a e36. But that isn't really a classic. Yet, perhaps. Or an e34, but that is just a wallet buster waiting to happen.

>€3000 budget for purchase
>first classic car
>easy to wrench on
>reasonable parts availability
>some modern day merits
>some form of joie de vivre.

Which one should I get first?
I'll still need to access the brake lines to replace them, so should I take that into account?

Not mine in the picture, but 1989 Pontiac Formula 350. Mine is still in the restoration process.
Runs and drives just fine, just needs cosmetic work. Interior and exterior.
>Heavily oxidated hood and roof paint
>Headlight motors broke so the headlines are stuck up 24/7
>rips in the interior, going to get some seat covers probably later today
>cracked on top of dash
>spoiler is a cracking in spots
>cassette player wont play (AAAAAAAAAAA)
>speakers going out
I've got no clue on how to fix the oxidized paint. I'm referring to these white ring shapes, which google has led me to believe it oxidation.

They're pretty cool. I'd avoid anything British or Italian on principle for an older car. Other options would be an old clio sport model or a gti. You probably can't afford insurance and upkeep on a fun be classic because >yurop but maybe consider a fun Sierra or anything used for rally. Anything jap that is fun is always a good idea as well.

Put compression tester on all 8 cylinders and they all read 90~95 PSI. They're pretty even all things considered, but there was oil fouling on every single one too. Originally had thought it was a leaky valve cover, but this time there's no oil dripping down so it has to be via the chamber. Truck runs pretty smooth, it wasn't powerful from the factory so no clue if it's actually lacking anything since it's going to be a dog even if it isn't. Plugs have ~500 miles on them maybe.

Any ideas? Reason for compression test was because of the fouling, hard to imagine all 8 cylinders being equally dicked but it's not impossible either. Was smoking a bit on heavy acceleration, but I had chalked that up to an oil leak at the pressure sender that I have since remedied and haven't tried it again.

Thanks in advance.

After this whole incident with the dickhole at the glass shop I'm kind of burned out. Put the fury up for sale and considering selling the TC as well unless I can fix the misfire fast. Sold the jeep for 14.5, so if I sell the TC I'll buy that celica to DD and have ~20k left over to throw at a muscle car. Or just stuff into the bank.

anything I'm missing here when diagnosing misfires? My mechanic is usually pretty nice to me but he doesn't seem too enthusiastic about poking around at the "million-'n-one vacuum lines"

while I'm the only one up... wut gears do you all recommend in my truck? Slant 6-powered D100 with 3 on the tree. I'm guessing 3.23. Right now it must have some ridiculous tractor gears, you can't shift into 1st unless you're at a standstill, and it sounds like it's going to explode on the highway.
>>
>>17742760
4.10s, duh.

But seriously, it depends on what tire size you run (235/75R15s?) and what your target engine speed is at a target road speed.

Tools:
http://4lo.com/calc/gearratio.php
http://4lo.com/calc/gearmetric.php

Top gear will be 1:1, and so will the T-case ratio (just put 1 in the box)

With those 235s, 3.73 gears would put you at 2800RPM at 65MPH. Which is pretty good, actually; you kinda need some power to push that heavy brick around, and 2800 will give you that.

So yeah, 3.73 is the lowest I'd go tbqh famalam. Unless you're somehow running smaller tires, then 3.55s.

oh and the 'fully stopped to get it into first' is normal, first shouldn't be synchronized.

It's an 84. I can't even get into the hatch lol. The lock is seized up, gonna have to crawl back there and cut the latch. I need to get my paint sorted out somehow... the majority of it is in good shape but the edges are all peeling and there's a bunch of fucked up spots. Probably gonna rattle can the fucked up spots for now, at least it'll be the same color...
>>
>>17743019
Damn, that's funny you mention that because the mechanism on mine wouldn't take the hatch all the way in, so the light would stay on and drain the battery.
>>
>>17743035
That's weird. Yeah all my locks are seized so I can't lock the doors or I won't be getting back in. First day I had it I didn't know, so I locked myself out haha. Thank fuck these cars are easy to break into. Just shove a thin ruler in the door
>>
>>17743051
Do you think it might have something to do with the anti-theft feature? For a while a year or so ago it was preventing mine from starting. Went through a bunch of bullshit trying to figure out the problem, and was told it was the fuel pump. We ended up cutting into the area behind the backseat but not into the trunk to change it, and now I've got to keep the window a little cracked to keep from carbon monoxide fucking me.
Here's the hood as it is. About to give the detailing clay a shot.

>>17743332
There's lots wrong with this one I think. Or maybe it's just carb tuning (which I have zero experience with so far). Previous owner tuned it to pass emission tests.

>Idle stalls on cold engine really easily, gotta keep choke on for a really long time (manual choke)
>Jerky on light throttle
>Starts up fine first time, if it stalls it gets progressively harder

Runs well when engine gets warm though. No issues other than jerky light gas then which I bet is just carb tuning.

Minor damages are not unheard of too.

Well I am happy to say that our summer stress project is coming to an end. All thats left is to paint it and put the interior together and it's good to go.
I was alot worse than we thought originally the entire roof was rusted through as well as the trunk and both quarter panels.
But after months with the welder it's looking brand new.
I am going to make a before and after picture of the process when it's done.

anyone know what this brown stuff is left on weld?
it comes easily when I go over it once or twice with wire brush

i looked online and people say brown stuff on weld means not enough gas shielding it and need more gas flow, others say it's normal after weld comes into contact with air after stopping? it's kind of like a dust or soot not solid

new to welding too. this was with 7L/min with 75/25 argon mix on 0.8mm, the welder has a sheet thing on it and it recommends 5L/min, i turned up because it's windy too and I'm welding at garage door.

The brown shit is impurities that have been blown off the parent metal.

Don't worry about it too much unless your welds start breaking.
>>
>>17747187
>>17747321
Oh wait, are you talking about the glassy brown stuff on top of the bead itself? That's well, glass.

IDK, man, I've never MIG'd without at least a bit of that stuff showing up. It's probably from atmospheric dust/whatever dust is on the metal before the weld.

Don't worry about that.

Went over to my buddies the other day and saw his next long term project, a 1964 Cutlass V8 Convertible. As the story goes the engine was rebuilt and the car was prepped to be painted then sat in storage for 30 years. He's still trying to figure out exactly what he wants to do but all the original parts are there. Bare minimum it's going to need a new front and rear end, most likely a new top, full paint job inside and out, possibly a new wheel, and a lot of TLC for the interior dash and trim components

His goal is a GT car, and eventually he wants to put an LS in there with a new tyranny (currently has the factory 2-speed auto) but that's a few years off. It probably won't stay stock but more of a restomod depending on the money he has to play with. At the moment we want to see if we can get the car running on it's own power and we're going to be checking the engine soon.
>>
>>17751301
And this faggot boomer keeps bidding and retracting his bid.
>>
>>17751298
Yeh we're a diminishing population in the northeast due to the engines outlasting the body, this one is rusty but only the outer quarter panels and sections of the rockers. It's a decent beater and it's fun at times. If I didn't have two other cars this thing would be fucking mint.

Yea the car's been kept stock but he wants to put a big LS crate motor in there if he can afford it a few years down the line.

Oh and the car is pre-68, which means there's no seat belts in this thing. It's got a bench seat in the back, no side mirrors, no reverse lights. It's got rear cigarette lighters and an ash tray up front. I mean it's got turn signals but it's gonna be interesting working on this thing.

If it's rust-free with original paint I'd pay $4500. I'm looking for a 300td after owning a w123 coupe and sedan but worthwhile ones are hard to find. Worthwhile meaning good original body & interior so it doesn't hurt while you catch up with all the shot rubber parts and deferred maintenance.

Here's my current Mercedes, a $500 380sel
>>
>>17751910
To be honest he really doesn't give a shit but that LS swap is probably 4-5 years off since it's a money thing. He wants a "500HP GT Sleeper" to quote him. Also this Cutlass is an automatic, specifically a 2-speed. He's a manual guy so if the motor swap happens he'll probably put a 5 or 6 speed in but there's always the possibility of a really good automatic.

For now we're just gonna see if the stock block can still run.

its beautiful :*)

And yeah $4500 sounds reasonable. But I can't imagine the owner knocking off $1500 but hey ya never know I guess.

Unfortunately in New England everyone with a rust free car adds the rust free tax to them.

Well shit Ive seen a rusted to shit W123 300td shitbox that the owner was asking $5k for and wasn't budging even though I pointed out the hole through the car on the passenger floor. I could clearly see the ground. People in this area are retarded sometimes.
>>
>>17751990
This is your typical midwestern 300td I think. Rusted out and its owner won't budge from $2800. 132k miles and a nice interior though.

https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/d/mercedes-benz-wtdt-diesel/6239719621.html

If it was under $1k and not structurally destroyed I'd do a dumb winter project on it. Replace the front fenders & doors, do some patch panels or just bondo everything and paint it single-stage white. And end up with a great beater that isn't *too nice* to use and abuse.

Its a hilltop next to highway in my city. Those table and chairs are setup permenantly there next to a barren tree. It's called the homeless memorial. A homeless woman used to decorate the barren tree every year for Christmas. She died not too long ago and was reportedly burried next to the tree, there is a large memorial stone with her name on it.

I've seen those table and chairs there for as long as I could remember, so one boring Saturday I grabbed my Bronco and roughed it through hills and gulleys up to the memorial. Sat there for about an hour and read my book. That was last year sometime.

Mostly cause all the smoke and it needed tuning. I know i shouldve done it myself, but after many bike carbs, i just didnt want to touch it.

I'm trying to fucking figure out the cost of parts to do a cam in my truck.
The cam calls for dual springs, and can not be used with the original springs.
Can I re use the keepers and retainers if they fit the springs?

Or is there a better spring solution? It's a Chrysler LA 360, and the cam spring spec 115lb @ 1.7in / 336lb @ 1.15in

Trust me my man, just do it all. Cam, lifters, pushrods, springs, retainers, keepers, and valve stem seals.

Just do it all. If you don't, you'll be back in there later. I went through this on my Corvette. I guarantee you that your pushrods are probably bent a little if they're original.

It's just a mild cam though, a 279TH7. I don't see why it needs all this shit anyway.

>>17759241
Not really, I was looking at just $400 for cam, lifters, springs, and chain/sprockets. All that other stuff is going to be another $300.

Then a $400 intake/gaskets, and hopefully a junkyard carb, otherwise another $400 for that.
The cheaper I can do it, the more possible it will be that I actually will do it. I've got a list other parts I need that's longer then Hitlers jew list rn.

When you upgrade the cam, even a little bit, it will stress everything else. And a 279 isn't exactly a small cam. It's not the biggest you can get, but it will lope noticeably.

So bare minimum if you can get a junkyard carb, you're looking at 800 dollars. Is another 300 dollars to do it correctly really that bad?

Trust me, with an aftermarket cam, you need to do all the spring parts, not just the springs. You also need new pushrods. I can guarantee you the factory ones are probably bent and will not hold up very well to anything higher than a stock cam.

I did two weeks worth of research before I bought all the parts when I broke a valve spring on my corvette (because of the high lift cam, mind you, see where Im going with this?).
My pushrods were visibly bent when I pulled them out. Previous owner cammed it but used factory push rods. You need hardened push rods, manley is a good brand. Don't forget valve stem seals because you're already there and theyre probably shot also.
>>
>>17759630
Bro it has a 107° lobe separation, it's going to lope like a tractor.

Fine, I'll buy everything reeeeeeeeeeeee.
I'll just cut the intake till I have the money I guess.

Im not really up to snuff on what all the cam specs mean, so I'll take your word for it. If thats true, then you really do need all that shit. My corvette lopes like a tractor too and all the valvetrain takes a lot of stress. I put dual springs on it when I rebuilt the top end of the engine, and supposedly I need to replace valve springs every 50k with my cam; it had heavy duty springs, but they were old and went snaperoo. I almost shit a brick though when I pulled the push rods out and saw them visibly bent. An

So, it turns out the truck has MU4 on the vin, which means it is indeed actually a Ford Ranger Explorer edition. It would have been medium copper with ancient white decals. You can tell everything about the truck with the pic of the vin and this link here: http://www.fordification.net/tech/vin.htm
I've used this on my build so much, and now this link is pretty much complete so if you have a '73-'79 ford truck this is a pretty good resource.

Trabanter reporting. If you consider buying a Trabi, they are really simple in arhitecture and if you're lucky to live somewhere like Germany or Hungary there might be plenty of them avaible.

The enthusiast community is fairly big and you'll receive support with problems no doubt.

Best part is it's as classic as you can get (1964 era aesthetics and tech with minor changes over decades) for as little money. And they are built with a simple mentality.

Alternatively, look into 80's VWs or Audis. Jetta, Golf, Passat are personal VW favourites, for Audi 80 hands down.

My dad has a stock 1988 Prelude 2.0S 4AT but I don't know if it truly counts as "classic" when compared to stuff like a 70 Road Runner, 69 GTO, etc.

He also has a Triumph TR7, I think 1979 model year?

No, it's not a 2.0Si, and no, it's not a manual. I didn't make a typo. But on the plus side, it hasn't been molested with aftermarket parts.
>>

The proper way to cheat the job by leaving the oil pan on is to take the old lip seal for the pan, clean it, and rtv the fuck out of it, and the rtv the tiny flat edges of the pan that are exposed. You can use rtv or a gasket set for the main portion of the timing cover, I prefer rtv.

So, put a layer of rtv on the timing cover where the lip seal goes, put your old cleaned lip seal over the rtv and squash it down, then put rtv over that and smear it even and around the rest of the bottom sealing surface. Then rtv the flat edges of the pan (get the corners good), and a little bit on the lip seal area. Then gasket or rtv the back side sealing surface of the timing cover and begin installation. First make contact with the lip seal to the pan at an angle and get it placed as you slowly push the cover on. Once its all the way on, you can push down on it so that the dowel pins seat, then seat fully to the engine block and install your bolts. Torque the timing cover bolts first, then the oil pan.

Done this many times and no leaks.

Thats the whole point of reusing the old lip seal, because its compacted and not as big as a new seal. You really gotta push it hard to seat the dowel pins but it can be done, I've done it many times. There's a good chance itll be okay though.
If that fails though...

>>17761227
Yes, it will work. Again, I've done it many times. It's a fucking hack method of leak repair but it will work. Make sure you clean the area thoroughly of oil, I mean fucking CLEAN. And then you gob and smear the shit out of that rtv, really press it in, massage it in, get any air pockets out, and coat the surrounding area of the leak liberally.
