Hey /o/ occasional lurker here and first time poster. Recently bought a used car for 1500. Its an 05 ford focus 5 speed manual and had 120,000 miles.

I haven't driven manual in probably 9 years but I think the clutch is starting to go because I when i'm in 5th on the highway and take my foot off the gas to down shift, but before i put pressure on the clutch or break the car kind of lurches and the rpms go up.

tldr; manual tranny, car lurches, and rpms go up when giving it no gas in 5th... beginnings of needing new clutch???
>>
Idk lmao I don't even own a car
>>
get into 3rd, punch it.

if rpms spikes for a sec or 2 and come back down to accelerate normally then you have a worn clutch.

Okay, thanks, I'll give it a try.

you notice slip in higher gears. like if you are in 4th, or 5th on the highway and you floor it, and it goes nowhere, that's a worn out clutch, or busted PP.

You can still do pulls in 1st, and 2nd.

another way is to dump it in 5th gear, if it doenst immedaly stall, its bad.

This sounds right.
Not op. Anybody have a better, yet reasonable way to test?

Pic unrelated,I like pics.

Open it and look. The way he suggested should be fine. If the clutch isn't dead, you'll be fine, if it is, what do you have to lose?
>>
>>17732159
dunno test it as you drive
check how many miles have you put to the car since the last gearbox check

sound. if every time you press the clutch pedal it does a scratching noise theres something going on inside the gearbox either the pressure plate, friction plate or even the flywheel
>>
Also a good sign of a clutch going out it a super high, or sensitive "bite point" if it feels like the clutch engages, or disengages, when the pedal is super high, the clutch material is getting low.

>120,000 miles
That's about time.

Replace it before it starts chewing into your flywheel. Source: bought a car on CL from someone who let it chew into the flywheel.

OP here, the bite point is when the petal is almost all the way out. I really just need a new clutch after doing more research and taking it for a drive. Thanks anons.
