I have recently bought a cam and lifters kit from summit for my sbc. I know I still need springs, spring retainers, and some sort of locks. Educate me /o/. What else do I need?(for it to be done the right way) I have access to a degreeing wheel but I'm not sure how to use it.
>degreeing your cam
Waste of time and for nerds. Just slap it in there with the timing marks, and wing it if the instructions call for a change from stock

Cams more radical than stock need higher compression and better flowing heads.
>>17730653
I may do that , depends on how fed up with the thing i am by the time its time to ram it in
Update:
This is my list of parts i need?
Add from it ?
Take away ?
Engine is completely stock 305
>inb4 get a 350
Putting an edelbrock intake on it, may get heads milled for compression (8.5 to 1 lmao)
>>17730681
You mean like 6 to 1.
And 305s are ass
>>17730668
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. There are a few cars that get a decent bump from just a cam. 5.7 hemi and all the Chevy truck engines.
>>17730668
Not needed , but I'm sure the engine would love it. Cam will work with stock stall converter (autotragic)
Not buying heads for a 305, this is just a temporary thing. That really is a waste of money.

>Engine is completely stock 305
Don't even bother with new springs etc. if you already have used ones then.
Hope you didn't get a cam bigger than the k1103, cause they won't work well with stock heads. Especially not 1.84/1.50 305 heads.

It's your wallet pal. This project is also a complete waste of precious time and energy. Get a 327.
>>17730755
>Get a 327.
Even a bigger waste of time if it's a small journal.
>>17730732
Wouldnt that mean uneven wear on the cam? Engine has almost 150k on it, I dont want it shitting out early. Care to edit the list I posted? It won't be driven more than probably 5k miles a year. Going in this beauty
>>17730755
I'm camming and installing an intake I already have lmao. Not going to be much. I would love a 327, but not looking to engine swap.
>cam in block

If it's broken in properly, then no. Especially if you aren't driving it much. You'll spend more on springs and retainers than buying a whole new summit cam. Just put new valve stem seals in the heads and slap it together.

>Cam in ass
>>17730668

Not needed, just recommended otherwise you're moving power to where the engine runs out of breath.
>more compression required to run a hot cam
Wat
>>17730822
Throw the 305 away, and go get a junkyard LQ4 6.0, a 4L*0E, and a driveshaft.
Fucking swap it fagit.
>>17730758
What's wrong with small journal?
>>17730637
need a tool to measure installed height dont forget shims either
>>17730825
brilliant insight and excellent contribution to the thread
>>17730822
If you're putting the 305 in that truck, then stick with the stock cam. You'll need every last ft-lb to get moving.
