Will 205/50/16 tires fit on a NA miata?
I already mounted 205/55/16's on the rear. Upgrading my 205/45/16's on the front would even it a bit out.
I'm worried it will rub though. It's not lowered.
Also: post tires for Miata and Miata general.

So what? Its more than enough rubber, especially for a summer tire. I dont do dumb shit like burnouts or rubbing curbs and the tread wear rating is 300. A smooth, quiet and grippy ride with as light, cheap, and strong a wheel as i could find. What size would you be on with a 15x8?

i think I'm gonna buy an NC miata next year and drop 15 or so grand on it to swap in a 2.5l and supercharger + some other mods. Does 15k sound like a reasonable budget? It's like 3k for the engine, 5k for the supercharger (flyin miatas SC, but I'm not 100% if that works with the 2.5 engine), couple grand for suspension and tires and the rest for whatever.

Ikr, sad state. Then you figure out just slapping on a turbo/intercooler and megasquirt, which is like 2.5-3k (properly) and living with a perfect balance versus slapping in an engine with 5x the potential but costs the same for an identical base power figure.

>>
>>17732830
The woodruff key can wear down in it's slot, causing sloppiness. The issue's far overblown though.
>>
>>17732830
What could possibly go wrong with having the entire crank nose resting on the clamping force of a torque to yield bolt that is reused by shitcunts when they do the timing belt?

What, I say, WHAT could go wrong.
Aside from an AC compressor coming loose, yanking the whole nose across some 300 thou runout and retarding timing 16~ degrees and jumping 4 teeth on the belt.

Obviously its difficult to compare fairly because of age differences, but how did mazda do on the NC when it comes to rust? Is the problem still there?
>>
>>17732832
Depends on your perspective. Far overblown? Yeah I guess. It's a non interference engine so there's no damage to be done when it does slip.
Unfortunately, if it does, the 660 fix isn't really a fix, it's a bandaid. The damage has been done.

The worst part is that if the bolt has been reused, it could be hundreds or thousands of Km/miles until it starts to slop. The car I bought just had its belt done, didn't start retarding until about 15,000km later.

Found a nice clean mx5. No rust, paint in good condition. Softtop is in bad condition but it does not leak. Hardtop included. All in all shell is in REALLY good condition.

But while test driving it I found some problems:
- On revving after a cold start there was a little bit of black smoke. It was like a single ball of black smoke and then it was fine afterwards. Potential problems? Owner said it does not drink any fluids except gas. He also said this was a first start after a day or so.

- Valve cover is oil stained. Needs head gasket replacement?

- Somewhere in the back there is a metal noise coming from when applying throttle on low revs. I don't know if it goes away or exhaust simply masks it when it gets louder. Exhaust/heat shield vibration or diff failing?

Don't know what to do. :(

I have braided lines and hawk hps pads on my car.

Im not a huge fan of the HPS. They dont have very good initial bite until they get hot. They stop just fine, but they just don't have that bite.

I wouldn't recommend the HP+ either. My dad used to have those on his corvette and though they have great bite, they squeal when they're cold and dust like crazy. Not good for the street.

>>
>>17733230
Unless you want to do a lot of engine work, avoid it. The black smoke is probably bad valve seals, but the valve cover gasket is an easy replacement to start with.

I get a similar metallic rattling when accelerating from low rpm, it could potentially be gravel caught in a heat shield or other component. Unless you feel a distinct vibration through the driveline at the same time, it's probably not the differential.

>>17734098
N is kind of the anti-meme, because being a more refined version of the NA makes it a better everyday car and less of a mild hassle that you put up with because it's entertaining, while also making it a better performance platform in general.

If shit is all over the walls and smells horrible, does it really matter whether it's lighter or darker brown?

ie

Who cares, how does it run and does it have the equip you need?

Also if the shit is very dark brown it means you've got internal bleeding and there's blood in the stool. Seek a medical professional if you experience this

What might cause a soft metallic ringing in a 93? Sounds like it's coming from up front and to the right down under while driving. miata question.jpg
3MB, 3264x2448px
Hi, I could get a free miata and I'm considering if it's a good idea given I couldn't really pay for the maintenance if things got too ugly, let alone do any work on it myself given I have no idea about cars.

It's a 1.6L NA, has around 200k km (~120k miles), is a bit beaten up, and has a series of annoying things. Mostly rattling noises.

One thing I'm specially concerned about is how heated the center part (console, side walls besides the legs, stick/cupholder area). For example, if I took a CD out after driving it for a while the CD would be hot. If you put something in the pocket below the CD player, it would get hot after a while too. If you touch the side walls with your legs, it's hot. If you place your hands some distance above the stick/cupholder area, you can feel the warmth going up.

Is this normal on this model? If not, any idea what the problem might be, and how expensive/serious the issue is?

Market the area I mean in red in a photo found on the internet.
>>
>>17741706
Completely normal, just needs some insulation installed. Or just leave it.

My 2001 does this too
>>
>>17741785

Is this something that develops over time, as they age, or do cars do it from the beginning?

>>
>>17741801
usually it occurs because the rubber shifter boot that seals the transmission away from the driver is torn open and allowing heat from the transmission and exhaust pipes to enter the cabin. You remove the center console and replace the boot. Keep in mind your legs are always going to be warm because they are riding next to the exhaust.

Those of you who daily Miatas, can you tell me your experiences? My commute to work consists of nearly entirely highways and I live in a midwest state with terrible drivers. I have to say, that does make me anxious. I don't really car about backseats or cargo, but I kinda care about not dying. There's also so pretty awful ice when the time comes, along with some pretty terrible salt to go with it.
>>
>>17742687
As an NZer, my commute is just fine. Never snows.
Just enough pep to pull off overtakes so long as it's on a decline.
Though, I see little dollar signs come off my rear wheels every time I find a roundabout.

On a serious note, you will not take kindly to the road noise - there's not much you can do about it aside from stripping the 1 thou thick carpet and laying down some method of vibration reduction. They are not quiet, nor is the wind noise without a hard top.

That's debatable but I prefer the 99-00 NB's. The NB2 (01+) requires premium gas for like a 5hp increase which is stupid, and the NB1's are a bit lighter and the engine is easier to tune if you want to go that route. The main benefit of the NB2 is it looks a bit better and has better seats, but bumper/headlight swap or seat change isn't hard.

Miatas are more like MR cars in that they understeer more often and only oversteer when you're near the limit and don't have much room to save shit. The 50/50 weight distribution and short wheelbase can and has helped the rear grip in the middle of a slide and sent the car snapping in the opposite direction. Put an LS in it to remedy this problem.
They are cheap, they were cheap, they will be cheap

Doesn't the NA borrow more from the RX7 than the NB? I always thought the popups make it look quite similar, at least from the front.

He doesn't care about which model performs best desu, it's all about maintenance costs with him.

I'm just a little hesitant with the NC because I heard it gets a bad rap, especially stuff about it being 200kg heavier / worse steering feel. I figured /mg/ would know best!
>>
>>17750723
the pop up headlights make them look similar, but the rx7-style indentations in the hoods and sides of the car showed up in the nb and weren't there in the na.

Why don't you look for sale on your local craigslist. Like nearby your house sit in it and figure out if you fit in it instead of asking us.

I'm 6'0 150lbs and fit perfectly.

Also you want a new steering wheel but you just said above you dont have any money/a job.

You know when you get a new steering wheel. Assuming its going to be aftermarket, you're going to need to buy more than the steering wheel right? Are you underage or just stupid?

It's louder.
I generally don't drive above 55 mph/90 kmph because of the noise levels.
With hardtop / softtop / open with/without windblocker: It's always noisy up to the level that you can't have a conversation with your passenger. cruising at 40 mph/65 kmph is just bearable.

My '91 Miata's clutch catches extremely high up the pedal. It's probably 1-2" down (90% up in the travel). The clutch does not slip at all and the car runs great. Is this indicative of anything going wrong?
>>
>>17757973
I mean, depending on the state, and if there's rust on the undercarriage, that's not really any rust. Literally could take that off by scrubbing it and repainting with touch up
>>
>>17758709
I beg to differ. That's perforating rust bubbling up under the paint on the rocker box and that pinch weld looks like it's being pushed open by by rust. Couple that with the fact that rust is always at least three times worse than what you see and you've got a big repair if you want a nice car.

What to do if a Miata has lived most of its life next to the shore and its all rusty? The guys at the autoshop showed me its underneath and rust had spread all the way from the chassis to the exhaust to everywhere.

They said bringing it to factory conditions would probably be too expensive, and that the car could work fine for another 20 years until the rust eats it completely.

Does this sound like something that could be accurate? Is rust something to worry about?
