Maybe you can help me out /dbt/, have a bit of a dilemma.
Haven't ridden in 2 weeks cause I was waiting on tire, going to replace it in a bit. My dilemma is I want to go on a ride right after, but I haven't really slept in 2 days. I feel like I would be ok, but, the safe voice in my head says don't. What do you guys think.

Have some anime and bike, just cause.

Time for new brake pads on dad's baiku.
New clutch plates have arrived but still have a couple 1000 kms to go before I have to change it.
Need to research how much effort and money it would take to convert my CB into a Thundersport 500 legal bike.

They're comfy, I occasionally use one on my FJR. Also have a bigger one for my car because black leather sucks ass in the summer.
>>

black leather also sucks in the winter, takes so long to get warm and sucks all the heat out of you.

My work car has leather seats, I don't get the draw of them at all.
>>
>>17725292
Gay as fuck.
>>
>>17725292
My bandit came with one. Doesn't really increase the comfort or padding of the seat. Apparently it keeps your ass warm during cold rides, but a) cold ass is the least of your worries on a naked bike in winter and b) it's more likely to get wet and stay wet, further chilling your ass

So I took it off. Get an airhawk or camping pillow if you're poor.

hello friends

So, I'm going to do the blue ridge parkway over labor day weekend and I'll be camping along the way, and I had a few questions that hopefully you guys can help me out with:

Has anyone done it over labor day weekend and know if it will be crazy busy to the point it'll be hard to have any fun on the BRP?

Do the campsites along the way typically accept walk-ins at the last second? How hard will it be to even find an open spot?

I don't know shit about camping, and I especially don't know shit about motocamping

I don't really know. My 750 Nighthawk seat is in excellent shape but it's yet to see a winter and I live in Oregon so it'll be a wet one. I made it fine on 800 miles across 2 days stock seat, testament to the upholstery's shape, but I'd like to preserve that leather and hang with a little extra warmth.

What else should I check?
>>
>>17725707
Then beads are definitely not for you, they increase ventilation a ton so you'd have a chapped ass in the winter.
>>
>>17725661
Check if your carb body is warped. It shouldn't bind even if the coating is rubbed off. I remember one scooter I worked on where overtightening the flange bolts warped the carb body enough to make the slide stick.

Unfortunately, if the body is warped, the remedy is probably a replacement carb. Or maybe needle files or somehow un-warpening it, neither options I have high hopes for.

What bike is this?

Send me a motor from the new FI ktm and I'll drop it right in
>>17725753
How do I see if it's warped, looking down through it it looks straight and smooth. The bike was running fine when I stopped riding it in the spring, but now when i tried it the slide is binding. It can go wide open to half throttle fine bit it won't go below that unless I physically wiggle and pull the slide down. Then sometimes it won't go back up and I have to wiggle and force it back up. I don't see how it would warp from sitting though.
Bike is a 91 rm 250
>>
I have an older scooter and I have to drive 40 Km combined every weekday to and from my destination where the highest speed I'm allowed to travel is 70 Km/H thanks to shitty country roads with low limits and I'm just wondering how I'm going to survive winter? There's no guarantee of snow but I need tips on how to survive the cold since this is my first winter owning a bike.
>>
>>17725943
Im in the same boat anon but ive got a dual sport
>>
>>17725895
If you have to force the slide then something is seriously fucked, either the carb is warped or the slide is fucked.
>>
>>17725883
The first one isn't a double apex per se, the second one is annoying because the second apex is absurdly close to where it merges into the other freeway so you have to find your turn-in point at the same time you're trying to judge the speed of traffic coming TOWARDS you and commit to entering during the tightest part of the corner.

Keep in mind of course the camera is way the fuck up on top of the google van and the orange cones are now guard rail so it's much harder to see what's coming while turning a bike.

I had a carb like this. It's butterfly would stick and require force... I'd hit it with brake cleaner (pure acetone where I live) and it would be fine... Until all the acetone evaporated, then sticky...

The cure was to disassemble the carb and hit every bit with acetone. Don't soak anything rubber in acetone for more than a few seconds, it's bad for rubber. Spraying on and letting it flash off is OK. non-rubber parts can be soaked but you won't need to, probably.

If you don't want to disassemble it, then just take the top cover and float bowl off and boil it in water for fifteen or twenty minutes. Won't hurt anything and melts away all the goo.

My brother left his 2007 Ninja 250 under my deck 4 years ago where it's sat, unrun, unmaintained but covered from the elements for the most part, mostly just still exposed to heat and cold. How much of a chore would it be to get it running again? Where would I start? I'm not that mechanically inclined, but was thinking might be a good way to learn unless I fuck it up completely. I've only rode the occasional friend's dirt bike as a kid, so I was thinking about getting something for the road.

He lives in another state and said if I can get it running, I can have it, but I'm not sure the labor is worth the difference in just buying a different one.

If they aren't well done, cost more than that, or aren't available on the exact bike you want they aren't needed.

Slipper clutch I use all the time. I've been riding for 12 years now, my last bike had ABS, my current bike doesn't, and I've never missed it.

Oh right. Wikipedia is not a source, anyone can edit it. I checked the source linked in that article and basically, that was the articles author bullshitting around -- representatives couldn't say what the limit was, the author ASSUMED it was the same as the Z1000's and then ASSUMED that the Z doesn't have one because of its inferior aerodynamics.
This illustrates nicely one of the problems with people nowadays (well, always, really): everyone just parrots whatever shit they heard that reinforces beliefs they already hold, without checking the source of thinking about it for a second.

>>17727506
The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.

Bikes are actually very practical for everything but shit weather and carrying passengers, but expensive hard luggage makes them anything but. It just makes them expensive and ugly, and even limits your carrying options a little. Hard luggage is very much single purpose compared to ye old tie downs and waterproof bags.

Luggage rack > panniers

if you want a hard case, put brackets on the hard case (pelicans are cheap) and drill a few holes in the rack that match them

Am I missing anything that might be useful as a sort of check list when buying a used shitty 250 (first bike)?

- electronics work

- no severe drop damage (drop scratches inevitable at my price range

- starts cold

- able to sit and warm up for a couple minutes, bring down choke

- revs nicely, no smokes/leaks

- clutch is smooth and catches nicely, goes through the gears nicely

- levers, pegs and shifter aren't damaged/bent

- no rust in the tank

-chain lubricated, no sharks on sprocket

-paperwork for services/carb cleans

-battery

I think carburetors are what is worrying me since one failed on the last bike I test drove, how can i ensure the bike won't just die on me?

No TV, Internet is at fifty and I'm not reducing that because vidya, phone is 30.
I do eat fairly cheap and only eat out twice a month, unless it's social with family.
Rent is good, about six hundred a month.
I bought my bike with cash, and I do have a credit card. I just don't use it for large purchases unless I have the money to pay it within the month.
Also I should have nice things like bikes. It's still within my means, I just gotta carefully plan it out. And we're past the halfway point in the season and I've done my big rides I planned for the year.

So I'm deciding how much I should put into a bike. If I put another 400 into it, do I wanna stay on a 500 Ninja another year? I like the sport tourers, and I really wanna pick up a cheap katana 600 to do it and get some more long distance rides down.

But if I don't put money in the ninja, I will have to sell lower. But if I slap four hundred dollars on it in parts, do I take that loss?

It's pretty complex, being poor.
>>
>>17727842
Hold the front brake and try to move it forward really hard. If it clunks don't buy it.
Prop the front up and make sure the bars move freely with a nudge.
Wipe the forks clean and then pump the fuck out of them and check for oil. No, it's never just dirt. It's oil. Wipe it clean and do it again, it's oil.
Any squeaking in the rear is bad.
Both wheels should be rock solid, not move side to side, and not make any noise if you spin them in the air.
Shift into second and then give it the fucking beans. Second is the first gear to start popping out on all bikes.

More sidegrades man. You're going from one budget bike to a slightly faster budget bike, not even a significantly faster budget bike. Save a few grand and get a liter naked or near-liter like an FZ9 at the very least.

The maintenance is very expensive and time consuming on those even if you do it yourself.

pump them like a pogo stick

if there's a ring of oil anywhere on the fork, or a little oil around where the shiny part meets the not so shiny part, the fork seals are bad and need to be replaced. a shop will charge several hundred. for a novice, it's a difficult job that starts with getting the bike to stay up without a front end.

I'm aware I just thought he was asking about Aprilia reliability. Hence what I said about the RSV4.

shitting on hard cases, wot m8?
>waterproof
>quick and easy to open and close
>quick and easy to remove and take inside
>protects your stuff from niggers
>protects your stuff from impacts

I've done a few years of sport touring and commute every day. I ran a luggage net for ages and before that a full set of wolfman waterproofs. Before that, a large duffel strapped to the seat. All of it was fiddly, all of it shifted and needed constant checks and tightening especially over washboard roads or 80+ mph blasts. Getting one thing out was a fucking drag and if the bag was wet and you opened it, all your stuff got drenched. Running the cargo net was slightly better for commuting, but still, if I decided to get some milk and bread on the way home, I would have to unstrap my work bag and then stack/crush the groceries and re-tie everything back down for the 1km trip home. Pic related.

So I'm gonna give hard bags a go for a while.
>>
>>17727972

You really don't want to see it up close. Everything is cheap and ucky.
>>
>>17727998
Get a luggage rack so you can affix the backpack to the bike using its own straps if your grab rails don't allow it

Before givi started jewing people and niggers started stealing shit, most cycle travelers who didn't ride baggers had racks for the extra tie downs and supports and just strapped carry backs to everything.

You won't see much of this shit on modern bikes except for cruisers because it doesn't look as sleek and modern, and cruiser riders generally live in places where people don't steal your shit (ie: not yurop)

In the US, many of us ride dual sports instead of trucking our offroad-only bikes to dedicated recreation areas and japanese bikes are generally better for that because of their longer maintenance intervals

And those of us that are offroad only do it a lot because it's normally right next to/on our property, and again, KTM maintenance intervals are prohibitive and unless you live next to a dealer so its getting parts.

I had a dr650 with basically exactly that, plus pannier racks and the wolfman soft bags. Undoubtedly a nice setup, you could also leave wolfmans off if you had to strap a tent or whatever to the rack.

It's okay-ish for very occasional touring but anything more than that, nah. You don't solve:
>load shift over rough roads
>load shift at high speeds
>ten billion straps
>not water proof
>doesn't protect your shit

>>17728054
This, however, is cancer. All you need is to invest in quality generic cases once, brand doesn't matter as long as it's good quality, then they can transfer across all your bikes in future. For example:
>hepco becker 50L top case $300ish
>hepco becker 35L side cases $500ish pair
>full racks for all of the above $250ish

So you have the initial outlay to buy the cases obviously, same as soft bags, but then your only expense if you change bikes is a couple hundred for the racks.

Motorcyclist friends are easy to find. When a man gets on his motorbike he ceases to become human, he comes something closer to an animal - and in the animal world body language is the only lingo that's understood.

When you see a group of bikers, get behind them and start riding with them.

At first they'll look you up and down a few times but once they see you come in peace you'll be soon accepted into the herd and there you go - motorcycle buddies.
