What's a good grippy tyre for the size 195/65r15?

I heard Yokohama's 740 GTX is a very good tyre, just looking for any other input.
>>
thats very narrow, but thats not a bad choice
>>
Don't even bother getting something that grips to pavement really well. That tire size is way too small for any type of actual performance. There's no point in dropping tons of money on your civic. What you should get is a high performance all season.

With that being said, I recommend continental Conti pro contacts. Continental makes some of the best tires money can buy.
>>
>>17715112
Cheers mate, I bought some Chinese shit tyres from a friend's shop for $40 per, they work for what they are but I'm not trusting them when it rains or any other condition.

I'll grab a set of those when I get the money, really good reviews on them, thanks again.
>>
>>17714953
that's a shit tire size. go up to bigger oem wheels from the higher trim level. get michelins. they're the best.

I threw some Sumitomo HTR AS Po2's on my focus last October, it handled a Chicago winter pretty handily. Cost $67~ a tire, no complaints so far.
>>
So I have an '04 Mustang GT right now. Like the power but coming from a Miata I hate the handling.

How bad an idea would it be to replace the Mustang with a ~'94 Corvette?
>>

What would you recommend going to to find some extra grip?

Not bad. They handle well, cheap as fuck. But you'll need to work on it here and there for sure

I posted this in the last thread but it died before I got to see any answer.

If my car has a non interference engine and the timing belt snaps how do you go about putting it back in time? I know there are timing marks but how would you know everything is lined up on the same stroke and such?
>>
Alright OP:
You aren't gonna be running laps with that car. You aren't gonna be trying to out perform anyone. Just get whatever fucking tires that are safe and go have fun hooning. Christ alive, you fucking people sometimes.

AWD vs RWD. Which is better and why? Does RWD have an advantage in cornering? Is the only advantage of AWD during straight lines and drags?

If the timing mark on the crank pulley is pointed up, then the first cylinder is at tdc. Now rotate the cams until they're pointed straight up as well. Throw the belt on and crank the engine a few times with a ratchet via the crank pulley. confirm that the pulley marks are lined up to the markings on the engine/timing covers. Count the teeth between the two cams.

>AWD vs RWD. Which is better and why?
AWD is heavier and sometimes promotes understeer on asphalt. RWD is lighter and is easier to control the rotation of the car via the throttle. Personally I prefer RWD because it's more fun to me but I also really like some AWD ones.

>Does RWD have an advantage in cornering?
yes due to less weight. Awd is faster on corner exit though. LMP1 cars are AWD and they are some of the fastest cars in the world. But F1 has them outmatched. It's hard to say which layout has a higher performance ceiling overall.

>Is the only advantage of AWD during straight lines and drags?
no, it's vastly superior on dirt and snow. Snow tires are more important than drivetrain in snow though.

>What about AWD in drifting?
it's not the same as RWD drifting. You need a ton of power to drift an AWD. Think Ken block gymkhana.
>>
>>17716122
High octane just protects against pre-detonation and pinging. It burns more consistently and precisely than low octane, so pinging doesn't occur. It also resists preignition from the pressure, so higher compression ratios can be used.
It all burns regardless though, you won't risk a misfire.
>>
>>17716143
>But F1 has them outmatched.
AWD was outlawed in F1 because it was seen to provide an unfair advantage. Infact, any racing series where AWD has competed against RWD, AWD wins. RWD can maintain higher mid corner speeds but AWD has higher corner exit speeds. Due to being able to get back on power sooner.
For fun, RWD wins, for outright speed, AWD.

>>

If you're worried about wet weather performance, i suggest pretty much anything fgrom the Kumho Ecsta range, i ised to run 195s on the fromt end of my SW20.
They're not going to set your world alight but they a decently grippy in the dry and have good water dispersion in the wet. The price is pretty reasonable too.

Do most FWD cars have torque steer? I have been driving my mom's RAV4 Sport and that thing jerks the wheel over when you punch the throttle. It seems almost dangerous. How do people tolerate it? This is obviously coming from a guy who has driven almost exclusively RWD in his life.

Tyres, move up from there.
Then bilstein/konis with eibach and swaybars or skip them entirely and get _decent_ coilovers. Tbh there isn't really much on the performance front other than turbo, so just focus on chassis/suspension.

Hey guys, I need help. I want to start to learn about how to work on cars, but I don't know where to start. I'd love to slowly repair a car as a project, but I really have no clue where to start barring searching shit on youtube. Should I lease the Chevy Bolt?

Right now I have a dealer offer for 149 mo with 5998 down 0 security deposit, but I qualify for 4500 dollars worth of rebates from my Electric company. The rebates count towards leases too.

So the left over 6k-4.5k = 1.5k/36 = 42 dollars a month added in cost of leasing leading to 192 a month, but I get free fast charging = 90 miles, any commute in my area, in 30mins saving me 100 dollars gas, I get 28mpg average currently in a piece of shit, so I can be leasing this car for 92~ dollars a month, obviously adding dealer fees is closer to 100.

It sounds good right or am I missing something?

So here's a question arising: what cars/makes have good AWD, and which ones are just meme-tier? I know that, for example, a CRV is really just FWD with some rear wheels that tag along from time to time, but a WRX STi has actually decent AWD.
>>
>>17717878
Because they will bend you over and fuck you up the ass. Interest rates and terms on them are spectacularly bad, because they are the final resort for non-creditworthy, poor and economically illiterate people. This means that they have you over a barrel, and they know it.
If you don't know why payday loans are bad, and you need to pick up $4k in cash for a car, you certainly fall into some or all of those categories. Sorry to be so harsh, but taking out a payday loan to buy a car is a monstrously stupid idea.

Meh, it's not that bad in a car with _decent_ power steering and suspension, and it's really only 'dangerous' if you stomp the pedal from a dead stop like a tard. I have a PT SRT-4 which is known for a rediculous amount of torque steer, but it's entirely manageable and predictable, and hasn't held me back from running a 12.1 second 1/4 mile in that car and raping much newer/more expensive cars at autocross and track days.

That being said, torque steer happens when you drive aggressively and how many people with FWD cars drive aggressively on a daily basis? Even then, if they do, they probably know how to handle their car. Your mom probably isn't punching it from every stoplight on her way to the market.

You should know how to find out already as someone with enough brains to be a university engineering student. In a university, needing others to tell you the answers is a bad mindset. Finish your university education instead of being a dilettante at rebuilding cars. If you have so much spare time, take on a side job or do an extracurricular activity that has some useful experience. Or work as an assistant in a research lab. I enjoyed my time in the lab and it provided good job experience conversation material with job recruiters.

With new cars, I've always changed the oil after the first few hundred miles. That's because I want to get rid of the oil filter which might have picked up assembly or break-in debris. I also like to switch over to full synthetic as soon as the "break in" period is over. As manufacturers say, there is no break in for modern cars. Yet they still recommend that new cars not be driven at the same speed for long periods of time. So there must be some break in but no one wants to admit to it.

As a sign that break in for oil does still exist. chevrolet requires that new corvettes get an oil change at 500 miles. So there must be some concern with metal shavings or something in those expensive cars.

Look up previous archived /o/ threads on synthetic oil and you'll see why staying with synth is best for your new car. The difference in price for conventional and synthetic is small if you buy the 5 quart jugs at walmart.

Yes, the dealership may add on "processing fee's, car prep fees, and other bullshit fees" after you've negotiated a price. Look in their showroom if they have one for a small but probably hiden poster explaining the fees. You can hard ball them, and repeatably say, i want "x price WITH fees included. And if they act confused or say they cant do that, tell them to do the math and offer a lower price that will make it come out to "x".
Now sales tax is tricky cause every state, county and town may add a tax. You can uber jew them and say I want "x " price with fees and taxes. But I personally think that's pushing it to far. Those taxes are going to uncle sam, not the dealership. If you want lower taxes then you should've voted republican.

>when the salesman starts talking about a payment plan
A lot of places make money from the financing interest. Some places are aware that people try to hardball negotiate a lower purchase price with a financing plan. Then they stiff the dealer by paying off the financing early. So there are dealers that now have financing contracts written such that there is a fee for early termination of the financing contract by paying it off immediately.

The Air Bag warning light is on in my car. has been since the day I bought it. I did have it tested an it's a fault in the left passenger seat air bag. Which the dealershit wanted me to pay 5k to fix.
The light is starting to get a little annoying when driving at night since it doesn't dim like the rest of the clusters lights.
What would be the best way to kill the light. (inb4 reee jackass just pay $5,000 to fix it)
I was thinking about pulling the car apart to get to the cluster and either snipping the wire, disconnecting the bulb or covering it with black tape or paint.
Thoughts /o/ ?
>>

Put tape over it.
As someone who worked in a shop, women do this all the time but with stickers or a photo of a loved one. You can take the PREMIUM option and buy a cheap code reader/clearer for $20-$30 and clear the codes manually.

If the rims are under warranty, the leaky wheel rim should be checked for cracks letting air out. If the tire was improperly mounted, it may have a damaged bead.

Been watching videos on my cars cluster and finding out some of the common faults about it, which I also have but probably won't try to fix myself.
It just makes resale hard when you've got big warning lights in the way of things.
Should I pull it apart and tape over the bulb or just where the light comes though?

Everyone knows that a good way to get power out of any NA engine is to make it rev nice and high, but does that same rule apply to a turbocharged engine?

Is it worth building a really high revving 1.6-2L turbo engine?
>>
>>17722570
First time it was a puncture, second and third time it was losing air from the rim but I think it was where the rubber and the alloy come in to contact.
I rode the wheel like 30m real slow till I realised it was flat AGAIN.
The rims are 25 year old Citroën bx gti wheels.
>>
>>17722755
not really.

building a turbo engine instead of an NA engine is about cost and somewhat reliability. put a turbo or supercharger on an engine and run low boost and you can pick up a heap of power and with a good tune it will be reliable. Getting an NA engine to the same power level will cost heaps of money. revving high costs money.
Besides once you're forcing air into an engine you don't need revs

Strictly speaking, no racing series has ever allowed completely unlimited RWD vs. AWD competition. Even F1 has an amazingly strict ruleset. I'd predict that the weight of an AWD setup, with the corresponding tendency towards understeer will clearly be a negative. With truly unlimited aero (and ground effects!), RWD would have plenty of grip anyways. Too bad we'll never see such a racing series.

You're right, for street us. RWD is more fun, AWD has more grip and will usually be faster (as long as it's a proper RWD-biased AWD system, not FWD garbage).

>>
>>17716708
Torque steer happens because you add too much torque (not power per se) to a FWD setup with unequal length drive shafts. You can prevent it by not having torque, or having equal length driveshafts (Saab). Most FWD cars have it tuned out, by a less aggressive ECU tune in most cases. Some suspension adjustments can also make it happen less. An LSD might actually increase the amount of torquesteer.

If it's a RAV4 with the 3.5 V6, then it'll have about 250-260 ftlbs of torque, which is plenty to cause issues if you hammer it from a standstill. I've personally found torquesteer noticable from cars with over 200ftlbs of torque.

>>17716880
If it's properly installed, keep it. It'll save a lot on fuel.

>>17718376
>what cars/makes have good AWD
Two things: engine location, and drive bias.
Drive bias should be slightly rearwards, because that's where the weight transfers to during acceleration. ATTESSA is 100% RWD untill it detects slip for example, and the real Audi quattro systems are 40/60 in normal driving, and can send up to 80% to either wheels in case of slip. Haldex, generally considered meme-tier, is 100% FWD during driving, untill it detects slip, in which case it can usually only send up to 50% of power rearwards. This is because most Haldex systems are FWD-based, and transverse.
Engine position is also terribly important. Audi and Subaru have great AWD systems, but they force the engine to go in front of the front axle. This shoves the polar moment of inertia forward, which hurts turnin, and causes terminal understeer that even a heavily RWD-biased sytem won't fix. It also makes the car front heavy, which adds to the problem. You really want an AWD sytem that is RWD-biased, yet with the entire engine as far behind the front axle as possible (assuming a front-engined vehicle). Problem is, this means you're sacrificing a lot of the passenger compartment for dirivn gdynamics, which is a tradeoff very few manufacturers are willing to make.

Drag racing really started postwar, with the gasser movement. These guys had really shitty tires, which meant they had to rely on weight transfer to get traction off the line. The basic movement was started by the Ramchargers, a bunch of Chrysler engineers, and their ''High and Mighty'' Plymouth. They pulled every trick in the book to make that thing hella fast for it's age. In the mid 60s. tires and suspension had evolved, and instead of stock-looking cars (as opposed to dedicated ''dragster'' rails), they just started slapping fibreglass bodies onto tube chassis'. They were called Funny Cars (because they looked, well, funny), and Ford pioneered them. They were still stanced like gassers at the beginning, but again, advances in technology changed the stance of them. Eventually, they'd end up with huge rear tires, skinny fronts, and a rake that makes the entire body basically function as a wing. In the 1970's, a movement on the street started: Street Machines. They were stock-bodies cars, looking to emulate that Funny Car look, and their main visual attribute was big tires in the rear, skinnies in the front, and as much rake as you could get. They still look bitchin'.
tl;dr: Gasser, Funny Car or Street Machine, and because drag racing traction.

Same rule applies, but not as much. Just putting a turbo on a relatively stock bottom end (with corresponding redline) is a relatively easy way to get good power. If you really want to push the limits of power and throttle response though (and you've got the wallet to match), yeah, you want high RPM to go with that turbo. The more RPM you make, the more exhaust gas flow you can generate from any given displacement, which means you can spool more quickly, and throttle response isn't hurt as much. At that point, you might as well increase you turbo sizing, because you don't have to worry as much about throttle response, and bigger = more power. This can all go on untill you reach the limit of you built internals (none of this applies to stock engines). Making a high RPM turbo engine is a delicate balance between internal strength and internal weight. For more RPM, you want lighter components (because that actually decreases the load on, say, your conrods), but to withstand all that boost, you actually want more mass to add strength.

Is it worth building a high revving turbo bike engine? Hell yes. Anybody who's ridden even a midly tuned turbo bike will tell you that it's an experience. Is is worth building a screamer 2.0? Well, if you're competing in racing with your K20 or 4G63, yes, you need the RPM to get every last drop of power. For a street car, not so much. Same goes for big engines actually: if you desperately want a 3500hp street V8, you'll want big cubes, big boost, and piston speeds that makes most engineers question your sanity.

>>17722794
You are completely right about most street tuned/consumer end turbo engines. If you're after ludicrous power levels though, you need all the help you can get (and cost becomes largely irrelevant). Most people want 5-10PSI of fun and reliability, not 30 PSI of 1/4 mile insanity.

Because I would maintain my car well regardless of whether I buy a Buick or a Chevy. I don't want a chart of vehicle reliability that is confounded with the characteristics of the types of people who usually buy the cars. If I'm looking for a new car, I want to compare the cars side by side.

Such as "Of cars that were maintained per factory recommended schedule, car X had fewer breakdowns than car Y."

You have to rule out the characteristics of the buyer demographics or else you are comparing apples and oranges.

I went to a dealership to look at a car on saturday, but it was in for service so I couldn't drive it. They let me look at it and sit in it but couldnt drive because it was still on the lift.
I talked to the salesman and his manager and they decided they would drive the car over to me on monday (30 minutes away, but the salesman lives in the same town).

So monday comes and I get a call saying its still in the shop for repairs and it would be tomorrow (today) before I could drive it.

Once again, today comes and the salesman isn't able to come today and will be here "tomorrow".

I'm getting really tired of waiting, but I really like the car and haven't found any others nearby. Should I just tell them to fuck off or continue being strung along?

You can check the dealer honesty by getting the carfax or whatever your favorite database report is. The dealers often don't update carfax type records for cars they are selling in order to hide problems. That way, prospective customers getting a carfax won't see that it was up on the lift for a bunch of different problems being fixed.

/o/ i need some help

I got a flat tire today on my 2008 MT Impreza 2.5i. The tire looks shredded, so I'm guessing I had the flat and I was driving around on it without noticing (I felt the car pull a bit to the right, but it wasn't a strong pull and it mostly felt fine, no unusual noises)

Anyways, I'm pretty sure the tire is junk. I put on a spare (picrelated) and to me it looks like I need to add some air to the tire but I don't really know. Should I add air? There's a gas station 200m from my drive way, is it okay to drive there like this or should I remove the spare and walk over to the gas station? I've never added air using those machines, is it possible to fuck it up and damage the tire?

Also I need to buy a new tire to replace the flat. The previous set of tires have about 60k on them over 8 years (don't ask). I keep reading that I have to replace all 4, but that's expensive as fuck and I'm trying to determine whether or not I really should or if the issue with mismatching tread on an AWD (my MT is full time 50/50 split I think) is overblown. I've also read the excess tread on the new tire can be shaved off but I don't really know how to do that or if its wise.
>>
>>17725946
What's wrong with continental tires? Do you prefer more expensive and equally as good Michelins?
>>
>>17726038
I have the 2.2l bruv.
>>
>>17726046
spares need 60psi, you can limp it 200m away provided you take it super easy.

at the minimum you should replace tires in pairs with awd vehicles.
>>
>>17726046
Well you have to buy 4 matching tires with an all wheel drive or you will fuck up various components in the awd, included but not limited to the axles, differential, transfer case, or transmission. The tread depth also has to be relatively close.

You could buy 1 of the same tires you have now and get it shaved to match the tread depth of the other tires, however that wouldnt be a wise choice since you have 8 years and 60k miles. Those tires are basically at the end of your life. Pretty much you have no choice but to get new tires, you can do financing at your local tire store if you can't pay for them all up front.

In regards to the spare you can drive it to the gas station like that. Just make sure you don't hit a pothole or you'll bottom out the spare and bend the shit out of the rim. Make sure to air it up to 60 psi, and yes the air machines at the gas station will do that.
>>
Mazda 3 Touring or Civic Hatchback Sport? Either one will have the 6-speed stick.
>>
>>17726048
Not him but I worked with tires for 5 years. Can confirm. Continental and General tires are top tier. Very good compounds and tread designs. Kumho tires are also a very good tire.
>>
>>17726048
I mean 195 wide tires not being large enough for real performance.
It's a perfectly fine size if you have a small car
>>
>>17726072
Thanks anon. I have 8 years and 60k kilometers. So under 40k miles. Should I still get a new set?

Also how long can I go on the spare? If I'm going to buy a replacement set I need to figure out what to get and need some time to research. Going to and from work is about 50km/day, think I'll last until the weekend?
>>
>>17726075
Yeah I did tires for a little while too. When that's all you deal with all day long you really get a good idea of the quality of rubber these manufacturers use. General tires always suprise me for how well they perform for their cost. They are usually pretty cheap.

I can't believe someone unironcally thinks continental is bad. The Michelin meme needs to stop. Granted they make some of the best tires but you can do better for less money.
>>
>>17726105
195 wide tires are absolutely large enough for real performance

t. someone who runs a dedicated track car with 195s
>>
>>17726113
Safely you can go 60 miles tops on a donut spare. If I'm doing my math right that's 100km. The spare can blow out any time after that milage. Tires have a maximum safe lifespan of 10 years, since you already had one tire blow out the other 3 aren't far behind.

Unfortunately you need to figure out something soon my friend. You need 4 tires. If you need a cheap tire look at ohtsu, falken, kumho, or nexen. Any of those brands are a safe bet, they make good tires at very reasonable prices.
>>
>>17726116
Yea man. I ran General Grabber AT2s and they were a great tire. We carried a variety of truck tires (drive trailers steers etc) and Continental sold more than the others except for the michelin steers those are really good. Michelin tires have a really old and established customer base, but they're not as amazing as advertised thats for sure.
>>
>>17726125
I'm sure 195's are perfectly fine for the class your car is in. But we're talking about daily drivers, not dedicated race cars. Buying performance tires in 195's on a daily driver is an obscene waste of money.

How can I restore my flaky chrome wheels?

I was thinking something along the lines of
>peel off big flakes
>spread paint thinner on wheel (will this damage the wheel? I don't know thats why I'm asking)
>sand wheel and get all the surfaces smooth again
>put on a few coats of primer
>put on a few coats of color of choice
>then a few coats of clear coat

Will this work?
>>
>>17726046
Anon, you need to make sure that spare is in the rear, never put a spare up front, yes that means if you lose your front you need to switch the good rear to the front.
Also you need to drive that vehicle the least amount possible, and at the lowest speed, never at highway speeds.
And yes the other anons are right, you need to replace all 4 tires, go cheap, borrow money, or open up some credit but you need to get that problem fixed fast.
I repeat do not drive for long, or at high speeds or other wise more damage will occur.
Pic related, transfer case gear after a spare was left on too long.

>>
>>17726514

>>
Will I receive any added benefit from putting the stock airbox on in favor of the previous owners cold air intake?
>>
>>17726629
The font transfer case/diff is a pretty sensitive part of the vehicle, unlike the rear which is just a diff.
It's bad because the spare tire will have a lesser circumference than they old worn tires. Which means the new tire will be rotating at a slower speed than the old. That difference of speed is what will cause excessive wear to gears in the center differential/transfer case.
>>
i know yall focus on cars here, but i've got a question about my riding lawnmower engine. Earlier today as I was using it the engine sounded like it had a dead cylinder/misfire and was shooting a black soot like substance out the exhaust. I pulled both spark plugs and the tips were covered in carbon buildup and replaced them. It then stopped shooting black soot out the exhaust after it ran for about 5 minutes. However it still ran rough so i pulled the air cleaner off and it ran good as new.

anyone know whats up?
>>
>>17726753
Whoops meant that spare tire will be spinning at FASTER speeds than the other tires.
>>
>>17726755
Was the air cleaner dirty? It may have been plugged and started running super rich, meaning burning more gas than it should, resulting in black smoke
>>
>>17726767
yeah the cleaner was dirty (i.e., held up to sunlight and could not see light thru it).

>>

it depends from where you get them, if you get them from a reputable store, they'll probably be slightly used ones, but if you get them from a shady place you might end up with worn out tires.

I just bought my first manual transmission car today. I stalled it more times than I can remember and just generally made an idiot of myself. After a few hours of practicing I was able to get going in first gear from a stop without stalling or jerking, but I have to use the pedals very slowly to do it. Does this sound about right or am I just hopeless? I thought I'd be able to get the basics down with a days worth of practice but hardly being able to get the car moving is discouraging to say the least.
>>

PS stands for PferdeStärke, the German word for horsepower.

PS is used as the common abbreviation for metric horsepower, which is 98.6% of an imperial horsepower. It's mostly used by German manufacturers in their advertising, hence PS. McLaren does this too, which is why you have a 720S that makes 720 PS but only 710 imperial hp. Since the official EU standard is actually kW now, it's only being used for advertising, and nobody has really bothered to fix this stupidity.

>>17726642
It might improve idle quality, IAT's, and reduce intake noise, since most CAI's aren't properly engineered.

>>17727252
All of those and nitrous. And then swap it for something with spark plugs.

>>17727567
It's discouraging, but don't give up. It usually takes a bit longer to learn than just a day, although that depends on the person. Stalling it is fine, but just try and prevent it as best you can. Hell, people still stall manuals after driving for years and years, because of some stupid stuff like throttle and clutch adjustments. Yes, you have to be very slowly on the pedals. At first, you're trying not to stall, then you'll try to become really smooth, and only then should you try and become fast - at which point it's time to learn fancy stuff like heeltoeing.

Driving and accelerating didnt feel any different than it did before the buzzing happened. only happened for a little bit and i ended up driving past my house and taking another spin around the block but the sound became intermittent and eventually faded out. seemed to come back a little bit when i made turns but not nearly as bad as when i went up the hill. any pointers would be great.

Which part has what wrong with it?
>>
>>17729347
If you havent done the basics, first check your power steering levels and the color of the liquid to see its condition.
Then try to bleed your power steering system, you just raise it on 2 jacks and turn the wheel from side to side. There are many youtube videos on how to do this.
Check the pump itself and the belt to make sure its getting all the power it can

I don't know jack shit about power steering systems except that.
Good luck
