I would call it a leather jacket with an off-center zipper. I don't know if there's a specific ame for that kind of style. Sort of evokes a pea coat. It's also fugly.
>>
>>17712511
Ask on /FA/, back in the 80's that style was called "cadet." Although Cadet jackets normally have a straight zipper. The angled zip is a Perfecto design cue.

My advice for people getting a first bike is to get what you want. My first bike was a Yamaha Roadstar 1700, and I felt fine on it. It was a GIANT cruiser though. It was easy to resist not going full throttle 100% of the time. I suspect you might have a different experience with a Ducati.

Looks like a good deal, but I would say no for a first bike.

Ducati's are not easy bikes to ride, at least as far as the monsters go. The engine is made for racing so it isn't very smooth in the low RPM range. The ECU's closed loop is garbage so everything below 5k RPM feels like dogshit. Slow speed maneuvers require a lot of finesse with the throttle and clutch. While the bike is maneuverable as fuck on the road, the lock-to-lock of the handlebars is actually extremely short, meaning tight spots are a bitch. I have to do more multiple point turns than I'd like to in small parking lots, it isn't the kind of bike you can just weasel through every nook and cranny.

Also, looks like he doesn't have the belt covers anymore. I believe that's a dry clutch as well, keep that in mind. Most people ride the clutch at slow speed to alleviate the engine lugging problem, that means you're going to burn through the clutch faster.

What about a Street Triple as a first big bike? Been riding a YBR125 for 12 months (Brit) and been doing my mod 1 and 2 training on an MT-07. Want a street Triple but not sure if I should buy a beater first like a Bandit 600 or SV650 then upgrade later.

>>17713016
You're not going to learn anything applicable to real life riding from a game lad.
>>
>>17712992

Maintenance ain't too bad. The only work requiring special tools is the belts and the adjustment of valves. Checking valves is easy, adjusting is more work but not impossible. Belts aren't difficult, just require a tension tool and a way to tune them, most people just use guitar tuning apps.

Nothing is difficult with Ducati maintenance, it's just tedious. Getting at virtually anything requires removing the fairings and fuel tank, not a hard task but extremely tedious if you just want to clean the air filter or something. People opt for going to the dealer because they're lazy or the duck is their only bike and they can't afford to have it out of commission for 2-3 days while they're doing valve checks/adjustments.
>>
>>17713016
riding is a lot about body weight shifting and most of it happens on a subconscious level.

You cant really simulate it accurately.
>>
>>17713048
Avoid going over 100hp for first bikes. Trust me there is a big difference between something like an MT07, and a street triple. The SV650 would be a better idea, maybe a 696/796
>>
>>17712875
You'll be fine on that bike. Go and check it out if it's close. You can always lower it or get away with adjusting the suspension to sag a little more.
>>
>>17713013
They think it looks cool.

Which it does, but I'd rather buy some plexi ones than leave it open.
>>
>>17712753
Its much easier and more profitable to make the same bikes, year after year. Harley's upgrades just consist of a bigger engine.

The other problem is that whatever they make will have to cost as much as other harley bikes, if not more. Bikes that are made to attract people outside of Harley, like the Roadster and Street Rod, cost way too much for what they are. A Roadster costs as much as a brand new 600cc bike from any of the Japanese companies.

I think Harley may be a lost cause. The only hope for them is for Indian and Victory to crush them, forcing Harley to become competitive.

How comfortable are you on the 125? If you really feel like you have throttle and brake control down, I'd trust you with anything.

That said, when I bought my first fast bike, I got a rashed 600rr for cheap. I'm now a year in on that, so I'm trying to sell it to get one in nicer shape.

Yeah I've been doing ok to be fair. Still not particularly confident in going fast round corners with steep lean (I always bottle it and take it slow) but I'm not sure if that's down to the paper thin rear tires the YBR has. Riding the bigger MT-07 with fatter tyres feels a lot more stable both at slow and higher speeds.

>>17713124
Bearing in mind I've been driving a car for 13 years so have plenty of on road experience despite still being green on a bike. I mean, at the end of the day, it only goes as fast as you twist it. Right?
>>
>>17713156

Depends on the bike's throttle response, some bikes when you twist it just a bit, it goes like hell immediately. like the FZ09/MT09. Though that's actually more of a flaw than a feature
>>
>>17713167
its 2017 dont those bikes come with preset settings where you can just limit the bike to 35kw etc?

You get used to the throttle response in a day of riding though, and riding slow bikes for so long will develop bad habits when you get to a bigger bike that won't suffer fools.
>>
>>17713080

I dunno man, maybe you've had different experiences, but there's a few dealerships near me and they all have fair rates. Nothing higher than any other shop/dealership hourly rate. OEM parts are pretty cheap too. There's a dashboard fairing you can put on instead of the small useless bikini fairing, I didn't get one from the previous owner so I called the dealership and they had one sent to me from Italy for 10 bucks including shipping. Look online on ebay or whatever and that same part runs 30+ dollars.

People get "fucked" by ducati on maintenance because they don't do any of it themselves, so they take it in for an oil change, air filter cleaning/swap, valve adjustments, belt replacement, clutch plate replacement, and chain replacement all at the same time and then bitch and moan when the bill is 1500 dollars for 10 hours of labor + parts.

Previous owner took mine in for belt replacement, valve checks, and new battery installation before giving it to me and it was only like 350 dollars.

My neighbor has one and I've ridden two scoots when a friend got them for reviewing. They're a lot of fun, and the automatic really is very comfy when doing things reasonable people do, like commuting and going from A to B. The default luggage space is awesome to me, having gone through a bunch of nets for my bike and still not having bought saddlebags (fingers crossed a client pays his outstanding shit this week).

I have to admit that I was worried when I went into more serious turns; something about not being able to downshift made me deeply uneasy.

They're right about the body weight gripe, but that doesn't make it useless. Specifically in Ride, they emphasize throttle control and threshold braking when working up the displacement ladder.
Rewind is also a nice feature, making the game more accessable to people with twitchy fingers.

I owned one! It was frustrating as hell due to 50cc power but it had infinite cornering clearance and the brakes were surprisingly good. Long downhills on the touge were a blast. The uphill getting there was murder.

I gave it away to some guy who gave it to his bud, who (I'm told) adjusted the chain so slack it came off the sprocket in the middle of an intersection and he got hit by a car. Or so I'm told.

HRC sold this bike up until a few years ago in support of some Euro 50cc spec class.

How bad an idea is it for a noob rider to ride a bike without ABS?
>>
>>17713410

I do it every 2 fuel tanks, so roughly 300 miles.
>>
>>17714235
well, that was every noob before the invention of ABS...

Just do a lot of panic stop drills and you will be fine. That being said, locking the front and falling over is a traditional way for new riders to fuck up their helmets.

The only thing wrong you can do when the front locks is not let go of the brake fast enough
>>
>>17714235
Not a bad idea at all.
How can you expect to learn brake control if you always have ABS doing it for you?
just make sure you actually practice using your brakes unlike anyone who has ABS does.
>>
>>17714226
>the worst group of brand whores

You forget BMW and Ducati asspies
>>
>>17714253
how does having ABS prevent you from learning how to brake properly?
>>
>>17712511
>>17712760
these are just slight variations on the traditional 50's biker jacket. With overlapping side / diag zip to keep out wind.
>>
>>17714277
for one it stops you from even getting close to the limits of the bikes brakes so you will never know how much you can actually use and will likely develop bad habits of relying on ABS to stop the wheel from locking up meaning when you do finally ride a bike without ABS and get in a situation where you need to brake hard you are probably going to die.
>>
>>17714277

Technically with ABS you can just grab a fistful of front brake every time you want to stop and you'll never go flying over the bars. It can lead to the development of bad habits, sending you over the bars when/if you get on something without ABS.
>>
>>17714272
Although it's true that those are mostly cringy assholes you have to admit that they simply don't hold a candle to the tryhard faggotry that most Harley riders embody.
>>
>>17714305
>>17714307
ride an ABS bike, they don't engage under normal riding. You can still stop just as fast or faster by braking as you would normally without it kicking in.
>>
>>17714320
Last ABS bike i rode was an fz07 and they engaged way too early, the back brake was just about useless and the front would engage long before it does on my bike using the same tyres on the same roads.
>>

>>17714309
>>17714305
hello there nobike
>>
>>17714307
>>17714307
You make it seem people just naturally do this all the time
>time to brake, let me just pull the lever/smash the pedal as hard as I can
Because that's what you do in any other vehicle, right?

And as >>17714320 is saying
It seems like you've never tried a bike with ABS. You just assume it'll engage all the time. It's there to, hopefully, save your life and your bike in an emergency situation.
You can still learn how to brake properly because you'll KNOW when ABS engages. If you're braking too hard in a situation that doesn't require it, at least you won't slide and fuck up your bike and you'll learn not to pull the lever as hard next time.

/o/ really needs to let this meme die
>>
>>17714307
I think that this is the wrong way to look at it.

Ideally, a new rider has done an MSF course that includes lessons on how to brake and how not to brake, in which case, the ABS is only beneficial as it means they won't fly over the bars if an emergency occurs and they panic (cause they are new).

Under regular braking conditions said new rider would likely apply brakes normally and thus not feel the impact of the ABS.
>>
>>17714344

I rode a new SV650 with ABS at a test ride event and the ABS prevented the rear brake from doing anything at all if the bike was going faster than 15mph.
>>
>>17714402
i dont know if you noticed but the more you brake with rear brake the more weight shifts front making locking up easier

sometimes i wonder if im on /v/ talking bout RIDE or something

Yes, I understand this.

But making the brake completely useless is taking it too far. I agree that ABS is a universally good thing, but on some models it is overdone. I was doing slow speed maneuvers feeling out the bike and the ABS was engaging and preventing me from dragging the rear brake at all.

I use my bike for commuting and occasionally, I'll admit I'm a rossi on back roads. I'm not trying to get a ticket, never have.

Want a different Harley? Build one like everyone else does.

Looks legit and I would offer 700. I bring jumper cables (never jump from a running car) or my preference, a JNC jump pack, and try to spin the engine over.

I'd also bring a compression tester and check all four cylinders. They may be a bit low from sitting but any old, non-rare four-banger needing a top end job is junk to me.

You mean when harley "tries" they do a half arsed job and the result can't stand up to its competitors in any area of performance while costing more and then harley will go ahead and blame the consumer for their downfalls right?

Fuck harley, the sooner they die the better, greedy old cunts who can't get with the times....
Look at buell, they literally shut buel down so they could focus on "muh heritage" and now look how well they are selling without harley.

Fit and finish was awesome. Looked cool. It was slow but wasn't vibey or lumpy or anything. I learned it's just another motorcycle. Had fun. So my first time on a cruiser pretty positive.

Well gents,
Went down on my bike today. Nothing spectacular and me and the bike are okay. Was tooling around on my cbr250r on ranch/farm roads in the rain. Came across a spot where the gravel ended and turned into slippery clay, tried to cross it at 10mph. Back wheel gave up on traction and bike did a 180deg and me and bike ended up in a ditch.

ATGATT, no injury. Only damage to the bike was the front brake cylinder got twisted on the bars. Need to loosen it and reposition.

Sidenote: I met a water turtle, crossing the road... in the middle of the desert.

I've fallen for marketing /dbt/. Recently got my licence and I've been looking for a helmet I can use on road and off road.
It seems the top of the line helmet is the Arai XD-4, which looks really nice but is really expensive. However, whenever I look at cheaper helmets I can't help but think they're far worse and won't protect me.

I've looked at the Nexx XD1 and the Bell MX 9. What other brands should I look at?
>>
>>17716350
Not Bell, I've owned two Bells and they've both been shit.
>>
>>17716366
Okay, off my list then. Is Nexx seen as a good brand?
I'll have to try on some helmets to see what I like.
>>
>>17716350
Never owned one, but I've heard good things about the AGV AX-8. Considered getting two helmets, one for each? I've taken my street helmet (AGV K3) offroad while on a mates dirtbike, not any serious trails, just gravel and dirt single track paths through the woods and it's been fine for ventilation etc. I don't think I'd invest in anything offroad specific unless I was doing more serious stuff or offroad for longer than an hour. I'd also not take an expensive road specific helmet offroad (the K3 was cheap on closeout) for fear of fucking up and smacking a rock or whatever
>>
>>17716388
And by "smacking a rock" I don't mean wrecking, but constant bumps on rocks or trees or whatever that'll degrade the quality so if I get in a serious crash onroad it'd be less effective
>>
>>17716387
I've never heard of them, and I would advise against "ADV" helmets, they're kind of an expensive meme that aren't great at high speeds and will make you feel bad when you beat it up offroad (because you will), just get a good street helmet and if you find yourself offroading a lot get a second helmet (dirtbike helmets are pretty cheap) look at Shoi, Nolan, Arai, AGV
>>

>>

Yeah ADV helmets are generally pretty bad, but if that's what you want, I'd suggest the Shoei Hornet X2. Really great aerodynamics on that one, I don't notice much pull unless I'm tearing ass on the highway.

I followed behind a girl that almost went off the freeway several times because she couldn't lean at all.

it's porn reconditioning your brain to focus on female pleasure. it's more likely to happen if you jerk off sitting down because that mirrors the pose of women in most porn and adds more empathy. so, by fapping to porn you teach yourself to want to do it like a lady.

>don't watch porn

Should I buy a helmet used? What are things to look for when buying a helmet new or used?

I figure for the same price as an entry level bell I could get a decent used Shoei but not sure.

To clarify it's basically between $300-$400 Shoei helmets sold for $100, or a bell qualifier for $100 new that's only qualified for DOT, not snell.

My current helm is Snell and DOT, but it broke and it's a really old shoei elite.

Never buy a used Helmet. You don't know the history and it's not worth risking your noggin
>>
Are there any new helmets in the $100-$150 range that are better than stuff like the Bell Qualifier DLX blackout, Bell qualifier, etc?
