What's better for a new driver? I'm looking for a reliable yet fun ride.

VW doesn't do reliable.
If you want a fun reliable beginner car, the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Ford Focus, and GM J-bodies (Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire) are the go to vehicles.
There could be a nuclear apocalypse and those cars will still be running around.

Such a meme
EU Vw's are more than reliable because they're not made by mexicans

>EU Vw's are more than reliable
objectively not

GTI has a *much* nicer interior and ride quality compared to the corolla. Corollas can take more abuse, but you get worse ergonomics, more road and wind noise, etc.
The biggest risk is that a corolla was previously owned by someone who beat the shit out of it because 'muh japanese reliability' and never changed the fluids.

Corolla is a reliable, boring inexpensive compact sedan. Nothing about it is fun but it's a pleasant ride.
GTI is pushing into entry level luxury sports car territory. Not known for reliability but they're really not bad judging by how nany 200K examples are being sold on CL.
Your money will get you a better Corolla than a GTI.

What does even "boring" and "fun" mean when refering to cars?
>>17713036
You'd know if you weren't a bus rider.

Bullshit, I've had only one car so far, so can't really say whether it's fun or not...

Fun:
-more power to shove you back into your seat
-Tires and suspension grip well when you take hard corners
-makes a nice sound when you rev the engine
Boring:
-Not enough power to accelerate fast
-primitive suspension doesn't let you corner quickly

I can tell you that a Nissan Leaf is more fun than a Dodge Caravan, so obviously the higher the power/weight ratio, the better.
