Be honest with me /o/.

How expensive is it to maintain a FC RX-7 compared to a Porsche 944? I need something to drive for fun.
Both base models, no turbo. Too expensive.

The RX-7 will be much less expensive to maintain and is less complex so one in the same condition will tend to be more reliable
>>

Is the FC a fun car to drive?
>>
>>17709353
Any RWD car with a manual transmission and a limited slip differential can be fun to drive.
>>
>>17709353
I know two faggots with vert FCs and they fucking love their cars.

So I'm assuming yes, theyre fun. With a rotary, if you maintain it right those fuckers will last despite the memes. If you want more power, you just get the housings ported from a shop
>>
>>17709332
Bought a 84' NA 944 January of 2016 for $2,300

I have spent about $4,000 total in maintenance/upkeep so far, including brakes, shocks, suspension components, timing/balance shaft belts and pulleys, radiator switch, coolant nozzle, a cam tower gasket, and a clutch, and i've realized I need new springs and their associated hardware with the strut. Also lost countless hours with electrical repair.

On the plus side I'm a dealer tech in training and I've learned to wrench and do a fuckton of shit thanks to it.

Also taken it to track days and it is a fantastic thing that eats up anything in a corner. Definitely underpowered in the straights though. (previous owner put a crazy-ass cam in it and it sacrificed acceleration for top-end power. Or that's what it seems like at least.) Topped out at 135mph on Pocono speedway's 2nd straight.
>>
>>17709391

Was it worth it? Would you recommend it for someone who is solely getting a car for fun driving & improving driving skills?

Solely for fun and improving skills? yes, Definitely. in my case, ABS has been ripped out and there's no TC, so it really is a driver's car, and you will quickly learn from your mistakes while driving it. (as i found out on a rainy day, pic related). I both daily drove it and tracked it, and it's a great car for both.

Would you rather get punched in the balls or fucked in the ass?

944s actually aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. Talk to actual owners, not shitposter. I think the only really hard thing is some druid cam timing ritual.

It's probably an aftermarket tail light for the 944.
>>
>>17709477

It's a beautiful car, that's for sure. In my area, both base models for RX-7 and Porsche 944 cost the same. Around 4 to 6k.

I might get the Porsche, so I don't have to deal with the rotatory issues, and feel bad about mileage everytime I use the car for anything else than learning.

>>

See, these are the cars I key in mall parking lots.
>>
>>17709646
Well it is quite easy to throw around. I've only tried to drift intentionally a few times, but the first time I went to a track day with the shitty tires i bought the car with, and still not used to it, I physically couldn't go around a corner without spinning the rear tires. I can see someone making a drift build out of this, but I haven't gone that route yet.

wouldn't most of those costs be in just replacing shit and not regular yearly maintence?
I'm not the OP but he's where I'm at. Want to DD one and take it to the track etc.
>>
>>17709690
It's probably fair to say that a rotary engine requires more maintenance than the inline engines in the 944 but literally every other part of a 944 is more prone to failure and everything, engine parts included is at least double the expense and there's practically double as many parts.

>>17709710
probably, you might luck out and not have to do much work on one, but it's getting harder and harder to find good examples that are well sorted out and taken care of. There will regularly be random component failures when dealing with something of that age, especially if it was driven like it was meant to be. All of the things I listed were parts that I replaced because they failed, not out of preventative maintenance.

>>17709737
yeah, he's not wrong. If you know how to wrench, and have good tools/space/time to work on it, then go with a 944. otherwise, make sure you're buying one that's been REALLY well taken care of.
>>
>>17709737
I imagine the FC will have a lot more of aftermarket than the Porsche too.

>>17709758

I found a RC RX-7 GTUS S5 with only 60k miles for 5k.

Looks pretty gud, would you guys go for it?

I've sold mine since but im probably gonna get another one. Glad yours is still cute
>>
OP here, I've decided that I'll buy the RX-7 and save money for a sure V8 swap.
>>
>>17709756
It depends on what you're swapping in. A 20B swapped RX-7 would be pretty cool, but it's not cheap to do.
>>
>>17710697

It would be cool, but I am not looking for something so rad. I would be happy with 300 to 400 horses and a reliable engine that can be beaten up. Specially if it can be had for just about 10k or under.

>>
>>17709756
I kinda like the lines of the FC, if only there was a cheap or cheaper turbo 2 in my area
>>
>>17709391
>sacrificed acceleration for top-end power.
Sounds like you're either not keeping it in the power band properly or it wasn't tuned to run with that cam.
>>
>>17709353
I went over this in another thread, but yeah the fc is literally a better car in every way.
>>
I just lost my SW20 because some teenager rear-ended me at a red light and insurance declared it a total

Will an FC cure my depression?
>>
>>17709756
944 + LS is a nice combo, the LS is similar in weight to the stock 944 engine so it won't throw off the car's stock balance as much as swapping an RX7 would.

You can also order kits to do it, though I'm not sure if that approach would be within your budget.
>>
>>17709756
FC has the transmission in the middle, bolted right to the engine.
944 has it in the back, so it has no transmission tunnel, meaning you'll either have to use the stock 944 transmission (which isn't very strong) or upgrade to a 944 transmission (which is expensive).
The FC would definitely be easier in that regard.

Also thinly veiled LS swap shitposting thread, cheeky.
>>
>>17710978
there is a chip installed in the ECU by the previous owner, but i have no clue how to mess with it. it was "left at stock" but i'll have to take it to someone i can trust to see what can be done.
>>
>>17711036
probably not, the only thing that feels even close to an sw20 is just that, an sw20. every gen MR2 is a different beast of its own and another FR rotary platform is like trying to find a new favorite pornstar after finding out your current fav died in a fire
>>
>>17712049
Don't some corvettes have rear mounted transmissions as well?
Just swap in the entire Corvette drivetrain, and use the 944 driveshaft?
>>
>>17712289
Not happening without a lot of fabrication. The Corvette's transaxle is specifically designed for this application, so it ends right between the rear wheels. Pic related, a C6 drivetrain.

>>17712385
Whereas the 944's transaxle is a modofied Audi FWD unit, meaning it starts right between the rear wheels and sticks out backwards.
For comparison, 944 Turbo drivetrain.
>>
>>17711036

Oh shit, that sucks man. Why not just get another MR2?
>>
>>17712392
>>17712385
I see, so would there be any modern unit that could fit?
>>
>>17712392
>>17712049>>17711651
Welp, I cannot afford a Porsche 944 Turbo for the better transmission. They run for almost 20k where I live. It seems more sensible now to go with the FC and save for an engine swap.
>>
>>17712404
There's the 6-speed FWD Audi 01E, found in some Euro-market base model A8s, B5 Passats and A4s, but the input- and output flanges/shafts on those are different from the Porsche ones.
People have also reported Boxster transmissions fit, which makes sense since the 5-speed manuals used in non-S models are straight-up VW/Audi units, but I'm not sure about input- and output flanges on those. The 5-speed is no upgrade from the stock 944 transaxle in terms of strength, though. Not sure if the 6-speed works, but if it does, that's a unit that can easily deal with the torque from something like an LS, but again, Porsche units are expensive.

Basically you're stuck with a 944 Turbo/S2/968 unit unless you can machine your own input- and output shafts.

It is settled then. I shall become the next Ryosuke of my region.

The n/a versions of both cars are not overly unreliable. If you need more power I would either find a tarbo or do some aftermarket turbocharging and tuning. Not sure how much boost either can take as the OEM turbo models are not very reliable, but I think 200whp is the sweetspot for a 2700lb car. I am a BRZ owner and I feel like getting this car to 200-210 whp with turbo who will make it literally perfect, and it's already fun to drive and trackable with the 160-170 or so that it has stock
