Does anyone know if I need a permit to get my class C if I've already have a Class M license for 4 years?

I literally cannot find the answer since Class M only licenses are apparently extremely rare so I have no fucking idea where I legally stand. I just want to get a class C tacked on to my existing license.

A kid pulled out in front of me and turned me into a hood ornament, destroying the forks on my 2000 Shadow VLX. His insurance just made me an offer: $2500 to walk away, or $1700 to keep the bike. I thiiiink the only damage is the forks, in theory I can swap on the forks or the whole triple tree from a bunch of other Hondas and a few other metric bikes. I'm torn as to what to do. This is the end of my second year riding and I love my Shadow, I've been able to pick it up from stupid shit and walk away. If the frame is fine, it maybe won't be hard to fix. I've got a truck and a car that need fixing up, and I could maybe quickly whip one of them into shape and ride them until winter when bikes are cheap again. I could even use the money to put a down payment on another bike, pick up a Shadow 750 or go test drive some Bonnevilles to see which one to hunt down. I want a survival bike at some point too. I just have a lot of emotional attachment to my bike and hate to see her thrown away.

not if you maintain it properly, it is still a dirt bike after all and people treat maintenance as if it's an understressed 90s street bike

it's a fine bike to start on. you will get a lot of fun out of it. it isn't an enduro or mx bike but it is definitely plenty capable off road pretty much in any conditions. if it is priced fairly and you're prepared to do some work on it if you are unsure on its history then i say get it

DRZ for 2.3k isn't too bad, depends on the miles though.
If you're mainly riding street, XT250 would be the minimum you'd want. XT225's are featherweight dual sports best for trail riding.

Halfway through the learners course in Victoria. We have really good instructors, so I'm learning heaps and can feel my self riding better.
But the way they showed us to slow ride was by riding the clutch and using the rear break to adjust speed. It worked really well, but is it the best way? I know the clutch can take a lot of punishment, but it still feels wrong.

im not seeing how it put power down to the front
>>
>>17706044
See the red cover? That hides a second chain, which is mounted to a driveshaft that runs through the frame, towards the steering unit. In there is a bevel drive (like Ducati used to have for their cams), which sends power down through the two black tubes running parallel to each of the forks. They then send power directly to the front wheel through a hub, like you usually have with shaft-driven bikes, except now there's two (pretty small) input shafts.

Not necessarily. Most highway patrol are alpha cars (one driver). Contacting you means turning up at your residence, which means two cops in attendance. They have to factor rostering in, so might be a week or so before they rock up to question you and/or charge you.

They'll turn up same day if you run from them because that's protocol for a police pursuit, but if it's just about the speed could be longer.

Depends on where you live and what the local laws are. Here, for instance, operator onus: whoever is the registered owner is deemed to be responsible for the vehicle and therefor deemed to be the driver/rider, unless they make a statutory declaration that another person was the responsible party.

So, you don't have a duty to nominate who did it, but you are getting the ticket yourself unless you do.

The ape is a decently comfortable sportsbike. It's not as wide as some of the inline 4 bikes of the era which is nice. I'm not really the *best* person to ask about comfort though as I've done 6-8 hour days, 5-600mile days on everything from KTM 690 dukes to Kawasaki ZX7Rs.
The ZX7 was, by far, the least comfortable bike I ever owned. So fucking sexy though.

ZX9 is going to be pretty similar to what you are used to comfortwise on the ZZR6. If you have the chance, take a spin on the Ape tho! You might never wanna go back to inlines ;)

Like a car, a motorcycle's clutch is a wear item.
Unlike a car, you can replace it yourself fairly easily, and in less time.
Bikes use a wet (lubricated) clutch, so riding it doesn't to nearly as much damage, especially since a motorcycle is so light compared to the power it puts out.

sidecars aren't permanent, but it's a serious undertaking to put them on, you need to mount it and swap out the suspension at the front at the very least, a lot of them use hub center steering instead of forks.

First, talk to your insurance company not the faggot who tried to kill you.

Second, if YOUR insurance company calls the bike a total loss, ask about buyback for about 500 bucks. Also ask about not totalling it but getting as much as you can with a buyback. Insurance companies have a lot of discretion. It often costs them to pick up, auction off and otherwise process wrecks of lowish value.

Forks usually protect the frame by failing and that might well be all that's wrong. (t. bike mechanic and builder from organ donors)

You should be looking at a nice profit and your bike back. Use this opportunity to learn how insurance and buybacks work.

You also have an opportunity as a mechanic to learn a lot and never underestimate the value of that. Even if your frame is bent, unbent frames with CLEAR titles abound on Craigslist and Ebay for cheap.

You can, and I have, replaced frames over a weekend or two (I'm lazy). Become bike mech and the world is your oyster. Shadows are good to learn on and don't forget real Honda and Shadow forums.

Spend some time on forums like Chop Cult if you want to learn more and perhaps build a custom while you refresh your wreck. Ignore anyone not an experienced mechanic. You'll figure out quick who is or isn't.

I camp using hammocks and rain flys. Hammock camping is fucking great, especially when it rains and I'm comfortably above the soaked ground and everyone else's tent is flooding.

Modern camping hammocks are great, but cheap shit hammocks are still very good. Visit hammock forums. You'll learn a lot. I wish I'd known about hammocky goodness years ago. I'd have brought one on deployments instead of hating military cots.
>>
>>17706917
Go visit sidecar forums. Some conversions go better with an Earles fork swap but that's far from mandatory.

You can mount sidecars to "normal" bikes and it will help if you do basic welding and fab, but again that's not mandatory.

Sidehacks handle like sidehacks, not motorcycles.

Uralfags have some very nice combinations for off-roading. Look into those if you live in an area where that would be useful.

UralAnon, please come and enlighten OP.

Oh, he is a dick. But also sidecars in general are super expensive.
Watching Craigslist, they mark up 1.5-3k Goldwing models to 10-15 k. Probably to justify the cost of conversion.

New sidecars are expensive. Look for used one in winter and hunt obsessively. Know precisely what you want. Swap meets often have basic Jawa etc side cars without mounting hardware.

New conversions already installed are expensive for obvious reasons. There are other ways but they take study like everything else.

Looks very custom to me but it's also quite simple to fab. If you run a tall sissy bar (also wonderful for attaching soft luggage) that's an additional hang point and if you don't wish to carry another you can tie off to trees, poles etc.

I'm not quite sure why he chose the right side of that Dyna except not to overload the stock sidestand or for the extra few inches of height. I'd install the much stonger, readily available, old style Harley sidestand (best ever on a motorcycle) then hang off the left for one less piece of hardware, but whatever ya do you could make a secure carrying bracket attached to a sissy bar and carry your stand where the bulk would not matter. Nifty piece of kit though.
>>
>>17707105
>Have a dog you want to tour with?
Ideally yeah.

But my question stems from the fact that I'm not really ready to convert my bike to a sidecar permanently because while sidecar bike is not a cage it does not give you the versability of a two wheeler on a day-to-day basis.
>>

Sidecars aren't really permanent, but they require a large amount of work to put on and take off, especially if you're doing it right with a leading link front end, car tires, linked brakes, etc. It can be done but if you only have one bike, don't convert it to a sidecar, buy another one for that.

Does anyone have experience with a snowbike?

Should I get into this to have something to do when it's cold? Is it better than snowmobiling?
>>
>>17707513
Slow speed maneuvering is magnatudes easier once you learn how to slip the clutch to regulate a really low speed.

1st gear on most bikes is way to tall to use effectively in slow speed maneuvers. You have a snatchy throttle and the bike jumps forward with just the slightest application of throttle.

The best way to fix it to to learn how to use the clutch ( slip ) so that only a small percentage of power is applied to the rear wheel allowing you to easily go slow. You can further help by using the rear brake at the same time to further help keep speed in control. the key to making this work for you is slipping the clutch ( the clutch is not in an on/off state, it's in between those two ).

Guys that make slow speed maneuvering look easy all have one thing in common, good clutch control.

My wife had one, pretty under powered but handle really well and feel like they weigh less than 250 even though they are 300ish.

Have a habit of being hard starting if they sit at all. When you shut it down if you aren't going to rider for several days, turn off the petcock and let it die by running out the fuel bowl in the carb. Next time you start it turn the petcock on and wait 15 seconds before hitting the button. If you forget and it's being a bitch, there is a bolt on the bottom of the carb that will drain the bowl. Let it refill and it'll start right up.

The rep at your insurance was being lazy. File with your company and they're required to take over negotiations/billing. Add an attorney and you get another level of complexity, but they're trained to go back and forth.

Include location in your search so you can get an attorney to physically harass. If they're running out of a call center, and using FAX to submit to your government, you will get fucked.

***at this point stop considering getting the bike back. Settling without prep is bad too.***

Yeah I wasn't wearing any gear, I had a Mosin on my back because I was off to do some /k/ stuff, I just sorta went over my handlebars and dropped on his hood but besides punching through his power steering line I didn't take any damage. Rifle was fine. The kid in the car was freaking out and idling forward, so I had to direct him to brake, then repeat the instructions when he tried to back out, and generally coach him through what to do while my leg was pinned between our vehicles. I felt pretty calm because what could have been fatal was just a cut on my thumb, just felt really sad about my bike. He was freaking the fuck out b/c it was his second accident in two months and he was an unlicensed minor.

Still feel sad about my bike. I am not a real sue-happy sort of person, but I figure I'll take whatever medical stuff his insurance can pay. Idk how to have his company pay me more money, though of course that would be nice. I didn't really miss work though I didn't get a rental for a couple weeks so I had to work remote more than I should have. I'll have to take time off work to fix my bike though.

I guess I should get a lawyer.

You literally just need something rainproof and some comfortable clothes. Gear isn't gonna save you from an impact.

Obviously a helmet is required tho.

>>
>>17709050
Gear is going to mitigate a lot of impact, keep your various appendages from catching on the pavement and snapping or initiating a tumble that would create more impacts, and save you a good inch of soft tissue in several places (which does not grow back)

No shit it doesn't save you from an impact, it's for abrasion. If you're cool with having gravel picked out of what's left of your skin by some middle aged Hungarian nurse, you do you. I'll wear leather.

Itchy. Don't crash and it's not a problem.
>>17709066
>Gear is gonna keep various appendages from catching on pavement or snapping
A leather suit is not gonna do this. Boots are the only thing that'll keep shit from snapping. Normally you'd wear these anyway because they're more comfortable to ride in.

>And save you a good inch of soft tissue in several places which does not grow back
Nigga if you've managed to fuck up hard enough to crash at those speeds you need to seriously re-evaluate your life. Don't go fucking crazy on a long road trip and you'll be fine.

>>17709069

What are sliders? They have them on gloves too. Sorry you fucked up and bought the BDSM enthusiast suit instead of the motoGP cosplay suit.

You mean 75mph, the fucking speed limit? Yeah, you'd have to fuck up big time to crash on the highway.

yes, just pack light.
look at ultralight hiking gear. Sub 2kg 1/2 man tent, 3/4 length sleeping pad, small stove, lightest sleeping bag you can afford for the temperatures you'll be sleeping in. That's all you really need.
forget about taking luxury items like camping chairs, full length sleeping mats etc.
I can fit all my stuff into a single 40l roll top.

Good argument m8.
>You mean 75mph, the fucking speed limit? Yeah, you'd have to fuck up big time to crash on the highway
>>not using your telepathic abilities to ward off deer and inattentive drivers
If you have deer running across the highway in a 75mph zone in broad daylight, you have bigger issues
>Inattentive drivers
This is why you pay attention in traffic. If you can't spot an inattentive retard up the road and pass them before they become a hazard to you, you've dug your own grave.

Nigga I've probably been riding longer than most people on /dbt/. I have plenty of road rash and I've had plenty of crashes in gear. It saves your skin, that's about it.

Good boots will keep your ankles from snapping a lot of the time. A good helmet will keep you from getting dead. Everything else will still catch a big enough bump or crack in the road and you'll still roll if you're unlucky. Congrats, you've still got a broken arm, and your leather didn't do shit to help it.

Gear is good for rain and it can be comfy, but a jacket and pants aren't exactly gonna save your life in a crash unless you're sliding far and fast. You sound like you haven't been riding long enough to even have crashed yet.

>you've never heard of joints
Dislocating your shit is a lot more painful than a bit of roadrash. Once again, if you manage to crash on a highway, you were either doing some dumb shit or not paying attention. Don't do these and you won't crash -- easy as that.

Not my concern. In the US scooters are not motorcycles, they are what drunks ride when they lose their drivers license. I'm not fond of drunk drivers.
