FUCK! just bought gas guzzlin all 'murican 1998 jeep grand cherokee laredo, and recently its started to sputter when in drive. if i quickly switch it to neutral or park, the RPM's go back to normal, but the second i throw it into drive or reverse, it sputters below 1,000 rpm and sounds like its gonna stall. my assumption is the fuel filter but im no mechanic. any suggestions? how fucked am i?

Actually thats preety common problem for this model, usually caused by faulty sensors

goto Jeepforum.com , find the ZJ forum and do a search for your symptoms. Garunteed someone there has had the same problem and will likely have step by step info on how to fix it. Worst case ontario , sign up and make a thread asking your question and it will more than likely get answered.
Should have bought a WJ
Is it the 4.0L? If so it's probably the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

If it runs and drives above 25 mph, it's not the fuel filter. It would idle fine and then starve for gas under load; you have the reverse of that.
Crank position sensor, throttle position sensor and Idle air control valves are famous for causing these issues on that setup. Also, it should be throwing a check engine light. Go to any auto parts store and they'll read it for free and you'll have an idea of where to start.

My wj cuts out at speed when it gets hot, it's why I clicked on the thread :(
OP here - took a good hard look at it, and one of my spark plug wires had melted to the engine, so it has been misfiring on cylinder 7 - thanks a lot, this repair will be cheaper than i thought!
My xj has none of these broblems :D
