Questions that dont deserve their own thread

So my 2001 A6 doesnt have cruise control and buttons for the board computer.

As far as i know if i buy the lever for cruise control it should work because my car has EPC(electronic pedal control). The board computer is an interesting one because of all the functions theres only range. Owners manual says there are buttons on the wiper lever to switch functions but there are none. If i'd install a lever with board computer buttons what are the chances it could work?

hey /o/. I was driving my aw11 mr2 after finally getting it it's own battery instead of borrowing from my dd and after 15 minutes or so I got 3 lights on the dash (cooling fan, charge, brake). This is supposed to mean that the alternator is not charging. Now as I immediately went home I noticed that these lights would come on momentarily before disappearing and then appearing again. Also as I looked at the battery voltage gauge it actually seemed close to as high as it would go (18V) which was odd. Today I turned it on again and the warning lights are gone but I notice that the place where a connector bolts onto the alternator gets quite hot pretty quickly as soon as I turn the car on. I don't think it's normal so I cleaned off the connecting surfaces but the heat there persists. Any idea what the issue could have been?
>>
>>17694191
Voltage regulator in the alternator has gone out.
Heat is caused by the massive voltage.
Get it replaced or you can blow up a battery.
>>
>>17693783
Not burning oil yet fortunately, I get a few seconds of lifter tick now and then though. Would that necessitate 10w40 or can I go ahead and use 5w40? Planning to use pennzoil ultra in the next change which is pretty much the best you can get this side of the atlantic.

The auto is indestructible manual is a 6 speed as standard so is the multi functioning steering wheel and you get lovely attention to detail I mean look at the key fob or how you dont have to hold the ignition to start the car just flip it once and car starts automatically cant burn the starter

and I don't think such a setup would be possible in my car, the bonnet latch is closer to the engine than the radiator
>>
>>17695675
Do you still have your OEM air intake setup?

Use that until you've first done something with the rest of the engine, like a better exhaust, an ECU reflash, cam, that sort of work.

Stock intakes are, on 99% of cars made after the 90s, cold air intakes. Most flow well enough to supply the engine with all the air they need, and putting an aftermarket intake on an otherwise stock engine is a waste of money.

ok guys here's an update;

the low beams stopped working again, previously neither the low or fogs worked which is how i figured out it was the relay, swapping with the horn relay returned the lights to normal and still let the horn work. i swapped them back, it's now stopped letting me use the low beams again, but the fogs still work. i swapped them once again and now have lights back to normal plus a working horn

so i'm leaving it like this for now, but should i worry about that relay fucking something up, or maybe making my horn sound randomly or permanently until removing it?

tl;dr light & horn relays are retarded, but functional, should i worry about retardation getting more severe?

So I found me a Lexus IS300. Love the way it drives but the previous owner has it straight-piped (cat-back). While I love the #nofilter 2JZ sound, this is a daily driver and I want to be able to listen to music and hear myself thinking (it has a loud as shit droning at all RPMs). I also don't want to get noise complaints from the neighbors or tickets.

I need a new voltage regulator for my mr2. Is the regulator really as expensive as a new alternator? I'm on rockauto and it's showing that both a new voltage regulator and a reman alternator from denso run for about 70 bucks. As I understand it the regulator is inside the alternator so it would be included in a replacement for the entire alternator plus the whole thing would be relatively fresh. Do those prices sound correct and should I go ahead and just order the alternator? Trying to not spend money I don't have to. Thanks /o/.

My neighbor has a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo Sport for sale. Can't remember if it's the 3.2 or 2.2L. Only wants $300 because the cat needs to be replaced. Called a highly rated muffler shop and they'll do it for around a thousand. Engine has been replaced, has 80K on it now. Has brand new tires that to me justify $300. What do you guys think? Assuming it's a good deal, can anyone chime in on the cars pros and cons?

Hi, /o/. I'm thinking about buying my first car, but I don't have much money (<600€) and live in Eastern Europe.

I'm about to do rotors/pads on my car. Rotors are warped, pads are just due for replacement.

I don't know what caused the warping on the rotors, and I really dont want to ruin new parts by doing the job half way.

>>17701915

Uneven tire pressure
Uneven alignment and balancing
Worn shocks or springs
Too many hard brakings
Too weak rotors

Try look on google if your car model has issues with warping rotors, sometimes even OEM rotors are not good enough and it is adviced to buy Brembo or some other quality brand

I was about to make a useless thread before I saw this post. Wondering if you guys can answer me a simple enough question. - I brought my car (pic related / 2004 Audi A4 B6 1.9 tdi) for its first non-dealer service. The Dude did all the usual and I was happy - he went so far as to remove fluid from my turbo without being prompted and included the work in the cost agreed, prior to this service I had no trouble with the turbo and everything was working well. So... two months on now and the turbo is quite noticeably whirring as it gets to just below 2000 rpm before returning to normal as the rpm's increase. Exactly what fuckery is this I wonder. Checking oil today before a long drive tomorrow and notice that /pic related/ plastic housing on the left hand side is unattached and loose. Anybody know what this is, could it be related to said whirring?

I just need confirmation I'm not retarded
My dad has a twin engine inboard boat. We opened up the bilge to check them out before we took it on the water and there was an obvious oil leak, not catastrophic but probably a pint of oil between the two engines. I checked the oil (mind you engines are dead cold) and both were overfilled about Twice the length of the dipstick. This leads me to believe the leak is from over pressure pushing out an oil seal.
I don't know a lot about marine stuff, but these are just some 5.0 v8 murkurs (or mercurys I forget) so basically a regular engine tuned for marine use. My dad's boat guy way overfilled these engines and probably caused them to leak didn't he? (My dad doesn't do any mechanical maintenance himself and has never added any engine oil or anything of that nature)

drain the oil to the full mark then clean up all the spilled oil, let it run or take it out for a spin if you can and see if you can see any leaks. whats more reliable an e46 or e90
both 320d and both 190k km
>>
>>17703141
After reattaching it, did the noise stop?

What you've got circled is your air filter box and cold air intake piping; having this left open could possibly make additional noise if it was the intake piping, and would definitely give louder induction noise if the air filter box was open and the filter unseated. Either way, it's highly likely the mechanic forgot to put it back together after checking the air filter condition during the service.

If it's still making that noise, then I sure hope you have pictures from before you touched it, or have left it as you found it - take your car back to your mechanic and let them know the situation, it should still be well within your rights to make them look into it, especially if something has been damaged because of their service.

Fronts and rears wear at different rates. Some times you can change the fronts twice before changing the rears depending on driving habits.
But side to side differences mean some thing is going on. Change the pads, lathe or replace the rotors, then do a good brake flush.
>>
>>17704965
That is one of those cars that will just run forever, more specifically the engine (vq35) is known for just that. On the other hand 270k is a lot even for a bulletproof car. I would buy for $1600 IF it looked perfect on a ppi. Then resell it for the same price at ~300k.

Are electric turbos parasitic? I mean, the energy to move the air is now coming off the alternator, which is parasitic, but what's the point then? At that point wouldn't a traditional supercharger be more efficient, seeing as the Kinetic->Electric->Kinetic energy transformations don't exist? I'm just kind of overall confused by the system's benefits, I guess.

When you talk about engines and their capacity, e.g. a 5.0L V8 - what is the capacity referring to? Is that the sum of volume that's in each bore? e.g. 625ml/bore x 8 pistons = 5L?

My parking brake doesn't engage. Wat do?
>>
>>17706192
The amount of displacement the pistons produce
>>
So say you think youre going to stop at traffic and youre in 3rd gear so you put it to neutral and brake, however at this point you see you dont need to stop because the cars are moving again, which gear would you put it into? You didnt come to full stop so it's not 1. And you lost some speed from braking a bit so it's not the one you have before. What do in these situations?
>>
>>17706335
Adjust it.
>>
So supercharger should give you more power that is usable from much lower rpms than turbochargers but a worse mpg, right? On average how big hit does the fuel economy take with a supercharger?
>>
>>17706335
I agree with this
>>17706386

You should be able to adjust the cable.

My mustang also has a not quite working parking brake, so if I'm on anything greater than like a 5% incline I have to leave it in gear as well.

I wouldn't recommend it but you could also try gunning it in reverse and then pulling the handbrake. Its how I "fixed" mine to be slightly more useable
>>
>>17706389
Depends on the tune and engine, in some cases it's negligible, and in some cases it may improve mpgs
>>
>>17706381
You should know what range of speed your gears are best in, but odds are I would rev match in to second.
>>
>>17706192
It's cylinders not bore, bore is the actual diameter of the Pistons themselves.

So yes it's the total sum of the capacity of all the cylinders from top dead center to bottom dead center.
>>
>>17705812
Should be fine, don't put any thing on it though.

I've owned a new edge mustang gt for about 6 years now and at the time I thought I'd own the car forever but I feel like I'm starting to outgrow it. The power is nice but it's an autotragic, and the fact that I can't even use a fraction of the HP without doing speeds that'd cause me to lose my license makes it pretty boring now. The storage space isn't too bad, it's been pretty manageable while i've owned it.

Now I'm thinking of getting an NC miata as a replacement as a DD. I want a sportier car that doesn't have an autotragic. I don't have a question, just wanted to blogpost about my car plans

I kinda want an s2k but they're starting to get rare taxed by the I KNOW WHAT I GOT types, I want an rx8 but I'd want to swap the engine in it, miatas have always looked cool and I almost bought an NA over my mr2. It just sucks because there are so few cars that just look approachable for me as both a DD as well as a nice sporty car

Ok so if someone does a power steering delete on an old car such as miata, e30, mr2 etc
do they just block off the power steering rack and remove the pump+reservoir while leaving the rack dry?

Or do you close off the power steering rack with fluid still inside so whatever is inside is lubricated?

Do police pull greezy ass shit like this a lot?

>be me on a Saturday
>driving down a quarter mile of road
>I accelerated kind of fast turning into that road
>some slow ass Honda in front of me
>might just be slow because there's a little traffic at a light up ahead
>might've heard me downshift
>I get into the left turn lane early
>this left turn lane leads to a popular drag strip
>the Honda turns into that lane in front of me
>Honda turns into the closest lane
>I turn into the far lane
>the Honda doesn't use turn signal
>turns into the lane I was in in front of me
>accelerates slow
>goes exactly the speed limit
>I follow behind for a while
>chilling in the drive way having plenty of opportunity to drive out, but is just chilling there, is a police vehicle
>pic not related

Did that police vehicle team up with that civic to try to pull a sneaky one on me?
Would that be something that police would do?
>>
>>17708792
That's a big one and it's not coming from the pan. If you can fix it yourself, it might not be too bad. If not, it'll cost you
>>
>>17708799
That's just minor surface rust, but it's on the frame, so you'll want to check both frames real good for serious rust
>>
>>17709508
Ths story got a little confusing towards the end. Did the Honda just stay in front of you the whole time, then you guys passed the cop? If that's the case I'd say they more than likely weren't working together, just a normie driving the speed limit.
>>
>>17709538
Ty m8. I can just keep an eye on the fluid levels and top it off until I fix it right?
>>
>>17709604
Yeah, but you better check that shit every day. If your transmission fluid is gone so is your transmission
>>
>go to look at car at dealership
>say I can look at it but can't drive it because it is getting serviced
>poke around a bit
>looks almost immaculate
>look at the shocks
>the rubber/plastic boots are ripped up on both of the front wheels

Is that a big problem? I told the salesman to have the techs look at it and he said it would. The car has just north of 177k miles on it.

As far as I know they were servicing the engine, I was told a they were replacing a gasket somewhere because it was leaking.
>>
>>17709683
The boots themselves aren't all that important for function, but they keep dirt out. Too much dirt will stop the shocks from moving smoothly
>>
>>17709704
So if they don't fix the boots (I know they won't), I'll be alright to drive it around? I'm mostly worried about when winter comes.

Would just taking the wheels off and cleaning it up every now and then help?
>>
>>17709712
I would clean the area around them, but don't mess up the lube on the shocks. You can spray wd 40 in them to open them up some. Probably wouldn't be too hard to make something from scratch to cover them up,
>>
how do I get people in the left lane that aren't passing to move over? usually I just pull up real close behind them and tailgate and flash my lights a couple times, but it doesn't work that often. neither does honking

what works well?

considering putting fake police lights on my car
>>
>>17709736
At that point if they really aren't budging I'll pass them aggressively on the right.
>>
>>17709736
Usually not much you can do with those fuckers. Just wait for a good window and pass them on the right. Getting on their ass will only make them go slower
>>
>>17709736
i found success with keeping as left as physically possible while staying in the lane behind them.

I'm actually having a dealership 30 minutes away have one of the salesman man bring a car to me to test drive.

the context is a bit different. I made an appointment to see it and they didn't tell me it was in for service so I couldn't actually test drive it

What's a good resource for learning how a car actually works? Like how all the parts interact with eachother and exactly what the fuck all the parts are? After having my car die on me too many times I want to know about them.

What's the benefit of having two rotors on the front wheel of a motorcycle? Saw five others like this at my local stealership.
>>
>>17712225
It's so the bike actually stops in the same distance as an econobox instead of rear ending everything within a ten second following distance.

Also make sure the calipers are 3 pistons per, minimum.

Bike brakes either suck or are sufficient for accidental stoppies.
>>
>>17712225
so it stops in a straight line instead of pulling to the side

the tranny is easy. the clutch pedal and electronics is hard. autos have a LOT of wires and stuff to remove. usually its easier if you have a donor car, but if it was only auto, then you might need to go aftermarket, such as wilwood?
>>
>>17712261
Nah. I've ridden plenty of bikes with single rotor front brakes. Good guess though. It's for more responsive, harder brakes that cool off fast. Kind of a sport option.

Also
>not riding a bike with cable operated drum brakes
What, do you value your life? Gay.

>>17712428
>only comes in autotragic
This means that there are no OEM parts to swap in. This means that you will be doing some fabricating. If it's a modern car where the ECU/OBC is the thing controlling the trans, it might also end up being a clusterfuck. You might need to run standalone engine management systems.

New hydraulics for the clutch, meaning you'll be learning how to make flared hard lines and crimp flex lines. Need a drive shaft that fits if it's RWD.

It's theoretically possible, but it's going to get expensive really fucking fast.

Fuck. I guess there is no such thing as manual Subaru SVX or Mercedes Benz 500E then at least on reasonable budget then.
>>
>>17712530
i think you can just use legacy parts in the svx
the svx is a lot less complex than the 500e
>>
>>17712524
Powerslide/Drifting means you're under power when kicking the rear out.

So no, that's just sliding.

>>17712225
moar power = the need for moar braking. Although honestly if you're riding balls out, you'll be using the rear more to trailbrake.

>>17712499
Honestly the thought of drum brakes on a bike scares me more than a turboe'd bike.
>>
>>17693775
It is. But the problem is its hard to buy one from someone who hasnt neglected it. Itld be cheaper to buy a car with a blown motor and swap in a rebuilt one. Then install one of those continuous 2stroke oil systems so you dont have to do math for premixing everytine you fill up.
>>
>>17712524
>>17712604
What do you call such a move?

Can you add input from the throttle and the handbreak to maintain and control the slide?
Would it then be powersliding?
>>
>>17712855
If you're understeering, and on still the throttle or worse adding more throttle then you're just being retarded.

What you're looking for is the Scandinavian flick which is a planned move. Its still not power sliding in a FWD car.

I was watching old SCCA races and realized the Lancia Stratos is pretty much the coolest car up to the 90s. I obviously don't have 450k usd for one, but, I do have a v6 camry and a friend with a clean aw11 shell he might part with.

The first few pages of Google tell me that a v6 WILL fit (snugly) in the aw11. Anyone ever do something so stupid before? A poor man's Lancia would be amazing if I could find a pipe shop that would bend the exhaust for me.
>>
>>17713265
It's a perfectly good car. Just not what the Miata purists expected as a successor. IRL it doesn't even look that bad.
>>
>>17713806
the cam rotates once for every 2 rotations of the engine, so just set it to the timing mark, then set the engine to tdc on cylinder 1 (should be mark on crank). everything is timed of the cam in most cases to as long as you get that right it wont matter how many times the engine has turned over since last used, just as long as it is at TDC on cylinder 1. Just make sure that you check the timing marks still line up after you fit the belt, otherwise valve/ignition timings can be a bit off
>>
