Better watch out with throwing mustang exhaust parts on a panther car. I don't know about your year specifically, but I have a 99 crown vic and they take special headers because of the cross members that are in the way. Mustang headers will not fit on my car.

You have a better chance with shorties than long tubes. Do some research, a company finally started making long tubes for all late model panthers after years of having nothing, so it's possible there's something for yours too.

You can get whatever parts you need for this car from classic industries or something. They are cool cars. Ppl always wanted Chevelles or Camaros. Skylarks are oddball. Seems like a great deal! But they aren't worth much it would seem.

Alright, i think i found a gem, but need opinions.

1981 Trans Am.
4.9
Auto
From the pics he sent me, very minor surface rust on bottom of fenders.
Inside looks very clean.
Says it ran and drive before....
... he broke the smog pipe.

Now from what the picture shows and what he said, it sounds like where the heads wrap around the front of the engine to bend back/down for the exhaust to run under the car is where it broke. Says it runs fine, but is very loud.

Is this just simply like running open headers exhaust? Or is this mean its fucked.

That appears to be the smog pump dominating the top left side of the image, and that water neck is on the intake manifold at the front of the engine.

So it looks very accessible, at least.

>Says it ran and drive before

The lack of hose on the water neck is a bit troubling though. Maybe he just took that off to get at that air pipe. idk.

You're paying for the parts and labor, so you're getting the car for free. It was given to me, I just want what I put into it back. New leaf springs, frame repair, new fuel pump, headlight switch, and headlight bezel.
>>
Just got through with a new level of hell; the power steering pump went out on my Imperial, so I take it out and have it rebuilt. Well, '66 had this weird gravity tension system and it would not tighten, so I bought a later bracket. Naturally, the bracket didn't fit the pump; it's for a Federal pump, but my car had a TRW, so I had to have it cut, rewelded, the top notched so it would work. Now it'll be an interesting setup and isn't original, but it works flawlessly and tensions with a breaker bar; as it should.

>>17690289
What engine?

I had one of those. If its inline 6, you need to do a water pump and thermostat immediately after purchase.

They are notorious for failing and overheating the engine almost instantly, which will result in a blown head gasket and cracked head.

They should be treated as maintenance items and done every 100k.

Dude with the fucked up 79, I'd pass. I bought my 79 specifically because it didn't have t tops. They're less sturdy and they leak all the time. Plus like cutlass said 81's are shit. You can still find second gens cheap. Mine was $3500 and besides the trunk and battery tray it's super rust free. I live in Ohio so that's even crazier to find something that rust free. Plus It's a WS6 car. They're still out there you just gotta look around. If you get one I guarantee you'll like it. To be honest I'd see about that formula that's in the background. She looks pretty damn cool, I'm a sucker for the formula hoods.

Also update on my shit if anyone is interested plus a few questions. I got everything I need besides headers, transmission, torque converter, and motor. The motor is still gonna be another week and 1/2 possibly 2. But speaking of motor it's going to have 9.4-1 compression and I was curious what octane gas I should use in it and what is the redline typically on the 400's. It's got speedpro pistons but it still has the stock GM crank and rods.

TC meaning town car and yeah the factory HO intake is garbage but as you can see the non HO parts are even more garbage. I'm gonna take a grinding wheel to the HO one and see if that helps

Don't really want to swap the motor just yet, I know the explorer motor can be had for cheap, but I can get an extra ~80hp out of these parts alone, which is like a 60% power increase. It'll more than make me happy and I get to keep it relatively stock

They're reliable as hell. The only reason mine is getting a new motor and tranny is preemptive upgrades since I'm going to DD it to college and the previous owner didn't take care of it at all. She still ran even with the metal I found in the oil. I only knew something was wrong when I found it. No low oil pressure or noises. I picked mine up the summer before my senior year of High school and I drove it literally every day except for one. The one day I didn't get to drive it was when I was having really bad hot start issues and I was working literally all night to get header wrap and getting the starter back up to it's spot (if you have headers on a 403 you know) it was being a pain in the dick. I finally got it, turned the key and nothing. I thought I fried the starter. It was 3 a.m. and I had school the next morning so I called it a night and bummed a ride off of a friend. Turns out one of the 2 small terminals I chose the wrong one. The only things I've ever had break on me was a compression fitting on the tranny line and the tranny line getting loose and blowing off. Other than that she ran great. Did replace the master cylinder and caliper but those weren't anything major.

theres a write up on porting a HO intake and the only difference between the HO and SO intake is the upper the work required to swap a cam in car wouldnt be much less than pulling the motor then you could just swap in a much better setup that would look basically stock

There were a bit of variables with mine. I ran a pretty small carb holley 1850-5. I got about 12 mpg but I have a lead foot and love to hear that 403 scream so if you were in 100% fuel saver mode i'd say 15 - 17 with a tail wind. Fbodywarehouse has a video dedicated to showing areas that rot out. In short areas on Fbodys that rot out are radiator supports, passenger side floor pans due to heater core failure, bottoms of doors, and the cowl area in front of the windshield. From what I hear the trunks can get pretty bad too. I'm no Fbody expert but as long as rust isn't too bad on them they're not too hard to fix. If you do get one you'll see a lot of quirky things they designed in them that seem really weird. For instance how they wired the power windows having all the current go quite a distance through the switch and back to the power window motor. Then the cowl water drainage that leaks into the foot wells if the kick panels are not sealed good.

>>
So this is a shot in the dark but any info is good info. Backstory:

>buys a '91 formula trans am that had been sitting

Here is where it gets fun. The car drove fine bringing it home, and the next day around town. I then tried to drive it to work the day after and it stalled on the street and I was able to coast into a shipping center parking lot. 305 TPI, 111k miles, manual trans. Symptoms are it will run fine for a few minutes but the while you're driving the car will fall on it's face and have no power. However, it will idle fine. I replaced the fuel filter and pulled one of the plugs (NGK) and the tip was severely carbon fouled.

The gas tank was rusted through where the straps go. It wasn't salvageable.

I don't see why it wouldn't make the trip. You'd want to guy a gas tank for it, and if you really want it, I'd get a carb rebuild kit and clean and rebuild it for your trip back. I think the accelerator pump is going or it's gunked up, it's a little sluggish when you step on it.

I have. It's not that difficult, and I'd never fucked around with timing before. Although, mine was relatively simple: Turn distributor with engine running until it bogs, dial it back a little bit and rev it up, listening for knock. No knock? Bolt it down, take it for a test drive, and get it into high RPMs. Little bit of knock when you're on the gas? Dial it back a hair. Test drive again.

The bad part is the dash is fucked, and the driver door pannel is as well.

I have noticed that there is a light grinding coming from the trans when at lower rpms. Sometimes though itll last all the way through 3rd gear if im getting on it. Is the trans fucked? Tomorrow im gonna change all the fluids to see if that helps.

You need the solvent to break up the cooked oil; and there's a reason I don't advocate running it long term. Though, if you're trying to clean the inside of an engine, you'll solvent. I've had great success with that in the past.

Uhh... is this oil or gas? I'm having a hard time telling honestly. Looks like oil but I've heard gas can leak and get all greasy from the engine bay. It doesn't really have any smell
>>
>>17702213
Well i found a place that will do the intake for me (i supply parts) for 100 bucks. Id do it myself, but im worried i may fuck it up.

As much as id love a blower... guess i wont..

Still need to solve the grinding/whining in the trans. Its in 1-3, but goes away in 4th. And it gets louder when i let off the gas in gear. Goes away when i press the clutch. Any ideas? New clutch? Change the fluid? Trans is fucked? Im sure a th350 would be cheaper than rebuilding the 4spd.

My dash is beyond gone. Like "cant even hange guages by zip ties" gone. Guess ill just try a cover and say fuck it.

Any idea how much window/door seals are? Pretty major gap between the pannels and glass.
>>
>>17703108

Windows and doors seals are retardedly expensive and don't even work 100%. Best to make your own out of weatherstripping if you can. Like $3 for a roll

I saw someone install a throwout bearing backwards on a clutch fork that caused a similar issue to what you were referring too. But since it's only in gears 1-3 i'd say you've got bigger problems. If you do end up swapping in an auto I'll totally buy the linkage and pedal assembly because I'd love to swap a 4 speed into my trans am at some point. The weather seals are expensive but honestly you might want to bite the bullet and replace them so you don't ruin your floor pans with rain water. Send a pic of the gap you're referring to. Your window might be out of adjustment. Also send a pic of the dash, I'd like to see how bad it is.

Well, the Excalibur is up on eBay; I've loved owning this car, but part of being an adult is giving up one's toys for a better life.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/162627950043?

The reserve is set at $26,000.00; for the curious.

>>
>>17702275
I used to run a pint of Berrymans B12 in my engine for 10 minutes to clean it out before an oil change. Yeah the solvent works great, but 2 quarts is a lot of acetone. 50 miles is kind of long way too with that much solvent in your oil.

Have you done this without issue before?
>>
>>17703973
What kind of luck have you had selling cars on eBay anyway? I'm trying to get 15k for my jeep, it's a little high but worth it to the right guy. Taking longer than I hoped though
>>
>>17704021
It's a mixed bag; I sold my '59 Cadillac there for $20,000, but got less than $200.00 for one of my Rolls Royces. The key is always, ALWAYS have a reserve if you want decent money. Often times, the car will sell after an unsuccessful eBay listing if it's a premium vehicle and have several people place SMALL bids on multiple days.
>>
>>17703876

Yes; it worked wonders on my '59 Cadillac and a mix of pure ATF and acetone freed up the stuck motor in my previous Lincoln; I used the same dilution to clean it up afterwards and that car ran like it should.

Doesn't 50/50 ATF/acetone work well as penetrating oil? I've never heard of anybody running the stuff through an engine though. Any idea how the mix affects the high wear surfaces like bearings and cam lobes? I'm sure it cleans things well, acetone is pretty strong.

me and a few friends found a 13 car barn find, mainly 50s and 60s shit that the owners are willing to sell for 200 a piece, all original shit that's not rotted in most cases
>>
>>17704893
How much would it cost to get a truck and trailer if you don't already have one? Also where would you store 13 cars?
>>
>>17704902
we have a fairly cheap storage unit nearby, we aren't a stranger to working on old cars and getting them to run, there's probably around ten that we're considering because the others are bashed up, the ones we're considering are a squarebody suburban with 4wd and a big block 454 and barn doors, a chevy 5 window truck with no rot, a datsun 240z, a gmc 300 truck from the 1950s era, a 72 pontiac ventura, a usdm mercury capri 4 speed, a 1968 c10 pickup, a 1968 c-30 flat bed and i think that's about it they're in varying condition but they all have solid frames and structure, all have engines and transmissions lights, windows etc I can tell you more about them

If it shifts and drives good It very well could be just low fluid. There's some videos on youtube on how to adjust your clutch plus we can talk you though how to fix that oil leak on the intake too. I'm broke as fuck literally spent a year of saving and sold a few guns to afford to change out my motor and transmission to make my car a reliable DD again so I know the feel. Honestly if you do your own work you'll save lots of money and a lot of it isn't hard to do just put on some music and go to town on it. I knew just the basics about cars when I bought mine but I learned quick since I daily drove mine through my senior year of highschool while restoring it. Is rubber cement reliable for a long lasting and heat resistant hold? I am looking to recover the rear shelf of my sedan, behind the passenger seats, and eventually install a couple of speakers. The shelf is exentially a fiberboard material, and what I have to cover it is black vinyl "blackboard fabric".

Speaking of which, how can I get out the last crease in that vinyl. The material was at the end of the bolt, so one crease has stayed persistently.

holy fuck, you weren't kidding. You're going to need a new dash pad and the face plate. Plus it looks like the mounts for the gauges have been lobbed off so you'll need the whole back casing of the gauge cluster if that's the case. Also don't gut the radio slot. Those are hard to find with the original mounts for the radio. If you want a radio put it in the map pocket. Also while you've got access and want to put in or replace the front speaker now is the time. It can bit a bitch with the dash still in place. The first thing I'd do is get the tranny and motor going good before doing cosmetic shit. Other than the top of the dash being fucked the bottom half looks mint!

>>17708793

That's kinda what I'm doing. None of my gauges work and I need to be sure my car isn't overheating so I'm just hooking up a bunch of autozone gauges and throwing them on top of the dashboard
>>
>>17709587
Usually the gauges are good and the senders go bad. If you take the plug out of the sending units and ground them they'll peg to one side if the gauges are still good. Before that make sure the fuses aren't blown too. On my 79 the gauges have their own fuse and the lights are on a really small fuse.
>>
>>17709614
I wish that was the case, but I've tested the gauges by grounding the wires and they didn't move. Fortunately I found a couple clusters for cheap
>>
>>17709635
darn, But at least you have replacements. In all honestly though aftermarket gauges are probably more accurate and easier to read. My temp gauge was off by a lot in fact 220 on the gauge was actually just above 165 when the thermostat opened. I probably got the wrong sender but honestly even then they're probably not that accurate.

there are plenty of rubber grommets that you can use to get the sensor through. Ones that are easy to get too would be the speedo cable one or the Ac/heat wiring harness if you have A/c.
>>17709787 The tach plugs into the distributor assuming it's HEI so check that. Also I think the guages are grounded by the bolts that hold them to the dash and there should be a few black cables running to bolts on metal bits under the dash (will provide pic if needed) so since they're loose that may be why they're not working. It appears your inner window sweep is missing. They literally staple in place and they're pretty cheap iirc

It's a little confusing on what specific ones you need Eg the chrome bead or no chrome bead. I've never installed one and I think they usually come pre installed on most reproduction door panels so you might be better off replacing the door panels if yours are bad.

Both good far as I can tell. Fan shroud protects it from those anyway

Did you check the lower hose? When my radiator cap went bad there was no way to tell and it spewed everywhere. Might be worth it to grab a new one, they're like 3 bucks

The radiator cap on my Bronco was only a year old and started leaking for absolutely no reason.

Coolant leaks can sometimes be hard to trace though.

Well ya, putting a 60mm TB on a 50mm intake opening isn't going to accomplish anything. TB, EGR spacer and intake need to match

Needed to do lower intake gaskets on my TC, so a good time for a HO upper, bored EGR spacer, HO TB, and 1.7rr's ,all shit I had laying around, same combo I've run on nearly all my boxes. Should keep me happy until I get some free time and drop one of the few Explorer mills I have sitting around in it.

No. A 'freeze plug' will NOT save your block from ice. Never. Not once. Always run antifreeze.

Also they're usually steel and prone to rusting through.

There's always a hole on the water pump to let coolant out if it starts leaking past the seal.
Note that it isn't there to save the bearing but only to indicate that your pump is shitting itself.

I've seen idiots put silicone/epoxy/whatever in the weep hole to 'stop the leak' and then wonder why their fan clutch ate the radiator a month later when the bearing got totally destroyed.

Oh by the way, if you find the leak, but can't fix it right away you can buy yourself some time by not tightening up the radiator cap. less pressure=less coolant going through whatever hole there is.
