Are new Corollas a good econobox to buy for the long run?

I wouldn't pay 20k to drive something that tells other people i'm dead inside

Nobody pays 20k for a new Corolla. And if they did, they didn't even attempt to negotiate price.

Wew.

The braking distance is pretty lousy on the current Corolla. That alone disqualifies it, imo. It also drives like crap.
The Elantra Sport is currently one of the better all-rounders, especially if you want a quieter car. It has to be the Sport even if you aren't looking for sportiness. It isn't actually sporty, but it replaces the normal Elantra's torsion beam rear suspension with a decent one that smoothens out the ride significantly. The Civic is also a good all-rounder. It's more fun to drive, but having to use a touchscreen for the stereo system is annoying.
The Mazda3 has a great interior and drives better than any of those, while still being very reliable and efficient. It is, however, relatively noisy.
The Golf is good at everything except reliability, so I'd avoid that one too.
