This. A vinyl printer is 1. FUCK HUEG and 2. thousands of dollars not including maintenance, materials, and a lamination setup.

For die-cuts on the other hand, you can get a really decent plotter for a few hundred bucks and all you need to go with it is vinyl and blades. Both of which can be had for very cheap.

I have a Titan 3, but for entry level, any of the cheaper US Cutter models are good. Check Amazon rather than the official site for much better prices. As for vinyl, Oracal 651 is the gold standard. It's readily available, cheap, and good quality.

That's because the industry is controlled by corporations that take advantage of the authors as they are starting out in life. The standard first contract an author signs with a manga or novel company typically surrenders all rights in return for a pittance of a royalty fee.

Once authors are established, they can choose to sign with different companies in return for greater royalty fees. However, there are such things as "no compete" contracts, and some authors have signed those and they can last a lifetime as long as the companies cleverly tweak the circumstances.

Legal "malfeasance" can be done sometimes. For example, Toei owns the highly profitable franchise "Pretty Cure" whose demographic is the same as that of Sailor Moon. The author of Sailor Moon had a contract with Toei decades ago but it had a lifetime term of "Right of First Refusal". To prevent Sailor Moon anime from cannibalizing Pretty Cure, Toei started negotiations claiming Right of First Refusal and dragged out negotiations to the max delay. At that point, Toei had to play or the Right would expire. Toei then entered production and had delay after delay for up to 1.5 years more. And then the product didn't look all that great. Toei also didn't want Sailor Moon to gain a large fan following that would cannibalize its Pretty Cure merchandise sales, so it made sure Sailor Moon appeared only in online streaming. And to keep Sailor Moon further, it was marketed to older women! Not the audience the material was really intended for. The tactic was quite effective.

So, corporations have a strong hand in keeping the profits to themselves. Only authors such as Rumiko Takahashi that went it alone to develop her properties and keep hold of the merchandising contracts did very very well on royalties.

Autism to a degree, but in the case of anime, you're really just redrawing the image to appear crisp and bright as compared to blurry and washed out like a screenshot would be. High res, crisp rasters are fine for slaps.

For printed slaps, you don't necessarily vector. Assuming, that the artwork is at least 300dpi and in the proper size.
For die cuts, you do need to vector because the cutting software needs a vector file.
I like to vector everything because it allows you to resize artwork to any size without losing quality.

I don't print it and I didn't make it, but it was my idea and for the love of god I hope Notori (or someone) prints it soon. I hate that I take such pride in having anonymously suggested a slap designed around a tranny pun I thought was clever, but here we are. Well he barely checks /osg/ or the discord so posts here won't help and actually make the here problems worse. I've had similar complaints about notori but at this point I just order stickers and forget about them until they arrive, it's easier that way. But I'll tell you just keep emailing him questions on why your order is taking so long until he gives you a proper response.

Most people print aimless/offset, if you want to cut your own stuff that's doable but it's also a different journey entirely.
Printing is pretty cost prohibitive, afaik notori and Wat Racing are the few people that print their own.

Offset is more expensive and slower, but the print quality along with quality control is higher. They're also easier to work with on a personal basis.
Aimless is faster and cheaper, but depending on what you're printing the quality might not be up to snuff.
Aimless has minimums of 25 i believe, offset 5 (but will do test prints if you ask nicely at $5/ea.)
If you live outside of the US your shipping will be godawful.
