Why do people unironically like Ducatis? I'm not shitposting, I'm genuinely curious. They're not reliable, fixing them is expensive, and in Colorado, there is only one Ducati dealership in Denver, so you'd have to take your bike there to get it fixed if you needed to. Are they just amazing to ride?

I do not have any issues with excessive vibrations on my Kawi. What you say may be true for some P-twins, but in my experience they are capable engines that produce good torque across wide ranges of RPM's.
>>
>>17672755
I misspoke. When I say smooth I mean throttle response. They're very jerky in the low gears. There's a reason only Japs make em and Triumph but that's for heritage reasons

And I ride an fz07 which is praised for being smooth

Small displacement bikes that rev to 20k get my dick hard. I wish there were more of them available in the States.
>>
Might unironically buy a Ninja 400 when it comes out.
>>
>>17672765
I've test ridden an Fz07 and it was smooth and responsive, but I opted for a slightly used (3000 miles) er6n because it was way cheaper. If you have smooth throttle control, all that jerkyness goes away. The bike basically teaches you to be a better rider.

If you've got the money literally anything is possibru

>tfw definitely don't have the money
>>
>>17672778
Yes. And a lot of older 250RRs and their 400cc counterparts are older than 25 years, meaning they don't need to meet EPA and DOT standards to be imported, as they are now considered classic vehicles.

Importing is expensive though. You can get a 250RR for something like $6,000 or $7,000 dropped on your doorstep.

Finding parts will also be a small nightmare.

I was looking at doing this until I hamburgered my foot on a 300 after someone pulled out in front of me. Live my dream please.

Downsizing is ironical. But seems like a great street riding package if it's well under 400lbs and has close to 50 hp.
>>
>>17672783
It's not completely a meme. I'm pretty sure they weigh less than 300 pounds, and they make horsepower somewhere in the 50's.

Downsides include:
>lol no EFI
>lower fuel efficiency, but still outstanding compared to a car
>sound might get annoying, cruising at 12,000 RPM
>>
>>17672796
Keep in mind that it's a 30 year old bike, and shipping it across the ocean might take 3 months.

You can theoretically do all of the paperwork yourself, but you won't end up saving any money. Talk to an importer. They're all extremely shady fuckers though, so be careful. All they care about is money.
>>
>>17672805
Seems silly for street riding but satisfying on track. The smallest Jap 4cyl you can buy in the states is a 600 for a reason.

I fucking hate the look of the stripple's front ends desu. Which is weird because I usually prefer nakeds over the fully faired super sport look but when it comes to Triumphs it's the opposite
>>
>>17672805
>I'm pretty sure they weigh less than 300 pounds, and they make horsepower somewhere in the 50's.

yes they do weight a smaller amount, however, they are also very small bikes physically. Theyre built for someone of a height around 5'7. If youre 6', theyre small bikes. You will still fit on them, just not comfortably or in the way they were designed for, which will not help the handling.

also they dont make 50hp. about 40 if youre lucky and they havent lost too many horses over the years. Theyre also quote slow off the mark because all the power is at the very very top of the rev range at 18krpm+, so off the line it takes a while for them to get into powerband.

theyre fun bikes however for anyone who is larger sized, id definitely avoid. If you are small enough to fit, i'd reccommend going to a 400cc model, as theyre the same frame size but larger engines. You really wont miss the screaming rpm too much.

having said that i used to own a hornet 250 which was a somewhat detuned cbr250rr engine in a hornet frame. Still revved out to about 20krpm. Was fun to hoon around constantly, but overall im much happier and have more fun on my drz400sm.
>>

The reason I always heard is that making an engine any smaller meet EPA requirements for import is too expensive to be economically viable. This doesn't really make sense to me, but whatever.

A 400cc I4 would be fucking perfect for me. I get why hooning down country roads at 120 is amazing fun, but I really like riding around in the city on a small, light, nimble bike that you can U turn inside a parking space without putting a foot down. If you drop it, no worries. Just pick it back up. If you want to limiter bash, it sounds like a tiny Ferrari.

Talking about bikes again makes me really, really miss riding. God damnit.

theyre good fun. Definitely not worth the 7k price tag tho. I guess its a case of forbidden fruit. Theyre very easy to come across here in aus.

If youre planning on getting one, I'd reccommend the Kawasaki ZX2r/ZXR250.

They have a 2krpm higher redline and look cooler with the single headlight.

It was developed as a moto2 engine and detuned for the street. It sounds amazing from reviews.

>>17672877

>how did that happen?

Seizure, 6 month mandatory waiting period. First one in almost a decade, we know exactly what risk factors caused it and it's exceedingly unlikely to happen again. Once my Doc signs the paperwork in September I can get my license back.

I don't have any way to get a bike to the track, and I'm not about to ride dirty because getting caught riding with no license would fuck me super hard when I'm only a month away from being legal.

the 250cc bikes were built for the purpose of providing supersports to restricted licence holders (which most people were) which looked and had the same cornering ability/ergonomics as their 1000cc bikes but only 250cc to make them legal. This was the same concept with the 400cc supersports as this was the next restriction level up.

I just think its so cool how on a bike you can buy them from factory with crazy graphics on them.

Thats just something that doesn't happen in cars, where as single colours+accents (still very rare) does happen sometimes in cars.

i also love graphics which pay homage to the manufacturer; e.g. italian bikes with red white and green graphics.

I have one (in the faster black). It's a cheap sport-tourer platform rather than a 650-class commuter or learner. The weight is definitely there which is great when alongside /tfg/ but I would not recommend learning or expanding riding skill on this bike.

That said, it's unbeatable as a starter touring bike. The build quality is much better than the FZ6R, for instance.

is there anything I can do to minimize the chance of some dindu stealing it since it's only held on by one bolt? Valves and belt replacement is cheap and at most $400 if you bring the bike w/o the fairings and bring in your own belt for them to install. Everything else on the major service list you can do yourself like oil change, recheck/replace brake pads/rotors etc etc. The valve adjustments on the panigale's are very expensive!!

It's called a "happy meter." Mechanical clocks by nature, and small bikes by design, display a speed roughly 10% greater than actual travel.
Some say it's a safety thing. Others that engineers get lazier as distance from the camshaft increases.

In general, it's safer to travel slightly faster than the flow of traffic anyways. Stop looking down, you'll stop noticing.

So here's the deal /dbt/

I'm going to get my motorbike license. BUT I'm a Euro, so I have to choose categories between A2 (limited to 35kW) or plain A (unrestricted). Obviously I'd prefer to go unrestricted. BUT I have a bike, my dad's old bike, which is basically the reason I want to get my license in the first place, and it's only a 200. If I go for unrestricted I'd have to do do the test on a 600, which is a pretty big step up if I'm doing all my practice on a 200. But if I go for A2 it'd be 2 years before I'd be allowed move up to unrestricted.

Wat do?

>>17674762

>>

>>
>>17674787

>>

No way, they're easier to lean on though.

I went to the Roadtec 01 from a Pilot Power 3. The Pilot Power is definitely sportier but I had it scrubbed in much farther even when going much slower. Pilot Power didn't lean as smoothly or easily either. The Pilot Power also got chewed up and worn out much quicker.

Really set on getting the Z650 but the MT-07 looks pretty damn neat too, but its a good $1200 more than the Z650 where I am from... if they had the SV650 here then that would have been my choice but we still have the shitty Bandit 650 instead.

Is there a reason why the MT-07 would be more expensive? Both don't have ABS, by the way.

The non-meme models like the 899 are supposedly rock solid (past a certain mileage so italian meme assembly-related failures are all worked out) and easy to work on yourself, barring parts availability.

Ducati's are fine mechanically, if anything is going to break it's most likely going to be the electronics which would be early enough to be covered under warranty.
>>
>>17674959
there was a batch of monsters with valve guides made out of butter
they were electronic nightmares that made 90s hondas look reliable until ducati stopped doing that shit in-house
anything with the desmo valves and timing belts is maintenance heavy (or "it breaks a lot but you expect it to so it's okay")
random bikes destroy themselves early on in their life (hand assembled engines ftw)
>>
>>17674975
I didn't say they're perfect, but every manufacturer fucks up every now and then. The extra maintenance is the worst part about them, I wish they'd fuck off with the belts.
>>
>>17674975
Was it the valve guides? I remember the whole Ducati line suffered from rocker failure when the contract plating shop screwed up the hard chrome. As I recall, they would replace the part, but not pay for labor... And when the first one failed, they would only replace that one, so by the time all the rockers were replaced you had paid for four (or eight?) labor charges.

This was a long time ago. No doubt all the bikes effected by this are dead now.

Brands and sellers mean nothing in China. It will be factory-by-factory, and there is no way of knowing which factory is making what beforehand. For anything that isn't mass-market, there will only be one factory, and often just one run of goods from that factory, so everyone has the same stuff.
>>
>>17674818
anon srs a 250 at low speed is very similar to a 600.

600s dont make any power below half turn throttle so just make sure you concentrate on slipping the clutch and not twisiting that wrist like a maniac.

you'lll regret not having an unrestricted licence quickly.

if you can ride a bike, you can ride a 600, guaranteed.

the reason they say dont learn on them is because when you start to get confident, you'll go faster and faster without the skills to slow down/know when to slow down.

Nothing certified, but I do 3-600 nearly every Saturday/Sunday. I want to go cross country on the next three day, but don't know if the new job observes them.
More important than anything else is remembering to drink water. I pull off frequently for dumb pictures, and down about 500 ml each stop.
Also pack lunch in case I can't find a decent restaurant. I recently got a vacuum Thermos that keeps coffee hot for nearly 24 hours.
Don't know what you ride, but the geometry on my bike allows for two seat positions. Balls on tank to rest back and arms. Ass on rest for abs and neck. At the end of the day, when detours have got me running hours late, I can alternate after a quick standing period (leg stretch) to do an entire gas tank without stopping.
Pack a sweater, even in summer. Comfort=focus, and on unknown, dark, mountain roads you're going to need as much as you can get. Coffee also dialates blood vessels, creating a feeling of warmth if you're wearing something to trap the heat. The specific reason for the Thermos is being able to do this roadside, trailside, or at a closed gas station.
Plastic. Bring a card supported by visa or master, so you can get gas in the middle of the night.

Now, on to my own question: It's accidentally day 2 of my first tune up, and I just discovered I may not be able to adjust the chain. Suggestions, for using the roll up stand? Do I really have to buy blocks for this?
I figure my fork oil's never been changed. After draining it, where do I pour in the fresh?
Also, experience with value adjustment on a rebel/nighthawk 250? Unexpected problems?
>bike on side
I don't own blocks, had to change the front tube. Fuck you, it took forever without proper equipment...

First riding lesson in 6 hours and I can't sleep out of nervousness.
What am I in for?
I used to ride a manual 50ccm moped from time to time so I'm familiar with changing gears and such.
>>
>>17675269
Are you just worried about the weight?
>>
>>17675471
If you can ride a manual moped you'll be fine. They're just heavier with more gears to choose from.
>>
>>17675477

Pretty much, I don't really have the experience to know how much the difference will affect me. I'll be getting lessons which I could do on a 600 but I'll be riding daily on the 200, I don't really have a choice there, if I form all my riding habits on the 200 I feel like it might fuck me up on a much bigger bike.

wat? Are the given specs with load, or with rear wheel off the ground and no load or something?

Also, noice HF stand, friend. I like your willingness to embrace the cheapness.

>fork oil's never been changed
Never needs changing. No combustion products to contaminate it, 1:1 lever ration means no heating, it really has a sweet, lazy-ass life.

> bike on side

You have the rear stand, but one of those el-chiep China front stands. If you own a jack, you can put the bike on the side stand, the jack and a piece of wood under the engine, and lift the front.

Also, what year is your reb., I think you have screw adjusters, and you don't need it, but Motion Pro sells a tool that makes it even easier than it already is
