I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laeredo. It has a 4.0 Liter I-6 Engine. The problem I'm having is whenever I'm idle, the car rapidly begins to overheat. This happens at long stop lights and heavy freeway traffic. Once I get moving fast again, the engines temperature goes back to normal. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I'm looking to get this fix asap as I'm not trying to have the engine damaged. Any help/tips will be greatly appreciated.

what about it? is the thermostat itself broken?

Most likely your thermostat needs to be replaced. If the temps only go down at highway speeds, it's because the air is cooling the engine. When you're stopped, the fans don't switch on because the thermostat is saying "nah we're good"

Engine Cooling Fan inop. Could be the fan motor or could be the relay

or more likely this

This. Idle the thing till it starts to overheat and see if the fans turn on. If the cooling fans never turn on, you found the problem.

I have a 96 with the 4.0 is started to overheat a lot. I replaced the radiator and thermostat and that fixed the problem. I think I only spent 100$ in parts and a weekend. However ive also read on forums some people picked up their used ones and i guess the previous owners took off the senpai shrouds. Basically I'd recommend a flush and full up with HOAT coolant. I used valvolines one called g5 or something its yellow. And swap out the thermostat as well it would take only a few hours max. My radiator got punctured while i was rallying down a trail which actually pushed me to fix the issue
