The "unreliable luxury cars" meme comes from cars like an S-Class or 7-Series full of the latest options that are bound to fail. The 3-Series is barely a luxury car so you don't have to worry about that. And they are so common that you can find refurbished, used, or aftermarket parts for cheap and don't always have to buy brand new expensive OEM from Germany when something does break.

have owned an 08 328i for a while. aside from a few sensors, which totalled 150 bucks i've not had any major problems.

I wouldn't get any bmw older than '99 if you want to keep it simple and fixable yourself. Don't buy any e39 with a v8. The e46 had a lot of technical updates like dual vanos and more electronics. They are still DIY friendly but the e36 chassis is just superior(and better looking imo). I would get an e90 if I had a good mechanic and set aside around 2k a year for safety. They are great looking though.
