Hey /o/

I've been saving some money from working I am now seeking to buy my first car. (15k budget)

What are your thoughts on starting out on a RX-7 F3DS? My friends told me is not a bad idea, that the car is pretty tame and not that powered if stock. Genuinly interested to know what you guys think about this, I would import the car from Japan as they are cheaper there.
>>
>>17662993
This thread is going to be a disaster
>>
>>17662993
fd's under the sun make me autism

sage

get a miata
>>
Better have 5k emergency engine tranny failure money on top of that 15k or else your 7s gonna be parked for a while
>>
>>17663000

Why?..

>>17663002

I don't like Miatas, they look so soft and pansy. Plus they cost like 6 where l live, 2k more gets me RX-7.

>>17663014

That's fine, I can continue saving and fixing it, I really like the chassis. Plus I have a small bike I can move around in if the car is stuck.
>>
>>17662993
Save yourself.
For all the hard-ons that rotary gives some /o/tists it's basically a nightmare of a car if you need a daily driver.
>>
>>17662993
>First car
>RX7

Obvious bait. But best of luck to you if you do buy one as a first car.
>>
>>17663079

I don't really need a daily driver, it's more about learning to drive and having something fun to ride along friends who own S13 and Beemers
>>
>>17663104
It's fine if it's not a daily but read up on all the extra maintenance and hazards that come with the rotary engine.
>>
>>17663121

Alrighty, I have a friend that really likes Rotatory engines will probably be able to help me get started.
>>
>>17663121
Seconded.
It's a very, very particular car that wants things done is a very particular way.
>>
Lmao RX7 posting is last weeks R32 GTR posting.
>>
>>17663029
A 6,000$ miata Will be 10x the car a 8,000$ fd is. Trust me nigga girls love miatas, they're very reliable and have a huge after market. Also if you wreck a miata delivering tofu on well you wreck a fd delivering tofu and car enthusiasts Will rip your spine out. Fd's are pretty rare these days and breaking one would be sad
>>
OP, go back to your other b8 thread. Your wording makes it way too obvious.
>>
>first car
>tight budget
>pick a random expensive piece of shit from the 90's

Why are you fucking weaboos so obsessed with 90's meme mobiles?

Just do like every person that is not mentally challenged and get yourselves modern used which is in budget so you won't have to work only to pay the car standard and unexpected manteinance...be adults...
>>
>>17663029
>I don't like Miatas, they look so soft and pansy.
The cute face of a Miata hides its true identity as a corner-destroying touge monster, capable of things no other normal car can do. Drive one. Take it out in the hills. Your opinion will change in less than three turns.
>>
>>17663244
How's 15k a tight budget for 10k car?

>Why are you fucking weaboos so obsessed with 90's meme mobiles?

Looks cool, will probably get me a lot of pussy

>>17663133

Well, in second thought it would a daily driver, or better worded. A nightly driver. At least until driving it gets old.
>>
>>17663280

I don't know man, they look really small. I am 6'3''. Will I even fit inside?
>>
>>17663178

>Trust me nigga girls love miatas

What do you mean? Should I be worried about it getting stolen?
>>
>>17663301
Actually legit question.
You may need to sit in one to find out.
>>
>>17663301
I'm 6'2 and I got fine. You'll want t to get a aftermarket steering wheel and probably remove the inside door handles and replace them with straps if you want it to be really comfy. Otherwise your knees will rub
>>
>>17663338
>trust me, nigga, girls love miatas
I meant to say that women love miatas
>>
>>17663342
>>17663349

Not sure guys, I think I rather import an RX-7. Looks a lot better. I don't plan on track racing anyway, is more for joy riding.
>>
>20 replies
>no apex seals meme
>>
>>17663178
Where do you get an 8000 FD??
>>
>>17663353

I hear this a lot but I don't get it, why would women find a Miata more attractive than a RX-7?
>>
>>17663365
You said it's your first car right? So is it for joy riding or daily driving?
>>
>>17663376

High mileage import cars from Japan, some cost as low as 6k, but it's around 2k for transport. Add 2k more for registration and tax. So pretty much 10k.
>>
>>17663382

Well, daily joy riding at night? I want to learn how to drive properly, I imagine I'll be riding a lot the first few months until the honey moon period wears off
>>
>>17663389
Lmao this idiot is about to get ripped off by japan partner or jdm expo.
>>
>>17663430
No, I stopped reading at "high mileage import"
>>
>>17663381
Because it's less threatening. Kind of cute even. It's a myth that girls love fast cars. They either have to be expensive or cute. My gf loves my miata.
>>17663365
That's exactly why you should buy a miata. An rx7 fd will shine on a racetrack. All the power and torque is way up in the rev range, meaning you'll have to be going very fast to have much fun. A miata isn't very powerful and thus you can. Use all the power. It's a tough as a big engine too so you can thrash the shit out of them and they'll be fine. A miata also has similar handling to a rx7. They're both extremely lightweight small sports cars. The rx7 just has double the hp.
The miata Will train you to drive the rx7. Get an rx7 when you're a skilled driver and you won't regret it. They're awesome cars but they're not a great first car desu
>>
vaccum lines

thats all u need to kno about owning an fd my nigga
>>
>>17663435
>>17663430

Which JDM car importers are trust worthy?
>>
>>17663381
small, quiet cars are perceived as fuel efficient.

Also it's a convertible.

also well-off older people particularly seem to enjoy Miatas so it is also perhaps a "oh my aunt/uncle/grandparent has one of those and they have a lot of money", but that's based on a cursory observation. A cute woman yelled "I love your Miata" at me out of a passing car in a parking lot the very day after I bought mine.
>>
>>17663502

Might consider it, have a look at some reviews and see if I can test drive one. Otherwise I'll just go straight for the RX-7.
>>
>>17663587
You're in way over your head kid, no offense.
>>
Honestly I don't think this is a good idea for a number of reasons OP

To find a good condition FD from a reputable importer will put you very close or at the top of your budget, considering you even find one

Reliability is another issue, but that's more of a meme than an actual concern. That being said, you still need to factor in that you will be taking it to a mechanic or fixing it yourself a lot more than a civic.

And finally there's the reason that you're going to learn how to drive in a rare, expensive sports car. Remember a few months back when that dude bought a brand new STI and totaled it like 3 days later? Everyone has gotten a little too cocky on the road and misjudged a turn. Over-correcting the first time you oversteer by accident could total that car and you wouldn't get nearly as much as you paid for it from insurance companies.

A miata is the perfect starting sports car. Cheap, reliable, huge aftermarket, god-tier handling, and fast enough that you can still track it
>>
>>17663601
>>17663592

What about the FC RX-7? I just don't like the Miata at all, also it's cheaper. To buy, I imagine it'll be much more expensive to maintain.
>>
>>17663611
You're probably looking at maybe 4-5k minimum to find a good rust free one that runs and drives, but yeah reliability is going to be the bigger issue
>>
>>17663611
The non turbo ones are even slower than a miata. Less reliable too. The memeata beckons you, answer his call

4-5k is fine, good condition Miatas na's cost like 7k in here. I don't know how to maintain Rotatories, but willing to learn desu. FC is a beautiful looking car.
>>
>>17663664
I'm assuming you live in the US right? What city do you live in where NA's cost 7k?
>>
Get a sw20 mr2 turbo and be done with it. If you can't deal with the way the miata looks the that's your only reasonable option.
Have fun snap oversteering into a tree tho. That's the price you pay for being a autistic faggot who can't deal with a car that doesn't look like it wants to eat children

>>
>>17663672

Nope, I am in Europe. (Andorra).
>>
>>17663690
What makes rotary's unreliable is the turbo desu. The old 12a rotaries were very reliable
If have a couple grand left over for a rebuild
>>
>>17663672
>>17663694

Actually found an NA for 4k.

To be honest, for only 500 euros more I could just by the Turbo FC, or at least check it out to see in what condition it actually it is in.
>>
>>17663704

In that case I'd just go for the NA FC, similar price. Once I learn how to maintain cars properly, I'll consider upgrades. Maybe save for an engine swap? I remember my friend telling something about engine swaps but I can't remember which one it was.

For now I just want to learn how to drive in a sort of nice car, one that I at least like the looks off.

No, it would be importing to EU. My country has no such laws are ''the 25 year old rule''.

The website I shared early, indicates shipping costs would only be around 1 to 2k to my nearest port (120 Miles away). Which is not too bad, the only thing is that I don't know how trustworthy

''CarsFromJapan.com'' is.
>>

A rotary is the perfect hobby/weekend car if you have a decently equipped garage. But don't buy one to get you around.

>I get the feeling you aren't fully prepared for this OP

I am not prepared for anything in my life, I take it as it comes.
>>
>>17662993
Well, it depends, do you know anything about the rotary and the work it needs? You should have at least $2000 for emergency funds. If you know what you're doing go for it, the FD is a fucking awesome car, you'll love it if you know how to maintain it.
>>
>>17662993

dumbass
>>
>>17666493
Also might I add, if you want to get into rotary, start with something a lot cheaper and less rare, like an Rx8 or an FC or hell even an FB to get the hang of it.
>>
>>17662993
OP if you're not trolling please don't buy an FD as your first car. I know they turn everyone's dicks to diamonds but it's just such a terrible idea.

Buy a nice miata, use that budget to throw a gt2560r turbo on it and you'll smoke the hell out of all of your friends. If you want to be different but drive something sick and JDM get a 70s corolla. If you absolutely have to have a rotary, get an earlier rx7. That way at least you won't be 20k+ in the hole when it ends up hardparked.
>>
just bought an FC as my first car, don't listen to people telling you that its too risky. As long as you do your research and make sure the vehicle you're buying is in decent condition, you'll be ok.
It's also important to remember that they need special treatment, not an ordinary car. with that said, if you're willing for this little bit of extra effort, it's totally worth it. Just make sure you know how to take care of it and have a steady income, cause that shit guzzles gas lol.

Why are some of you guys so fucking whiny? You act like I am buying a fucking dog or something.

>>17666542

No interested in the Miata, if I cannot afford a cheap RX-7 from Japan, or it is truly that horrible to maintain and drive, I will buy an FC.

I saw a Miata driving this morning, and holy shit was it small. No way I can drive that thing comfortably unless I do something to it.
>>
If it's your FIRST CAR you're going to wreck it. Don't wreck an rx7. I doubt you'll find anyone selling an rx7 that won't discriminate against some kid anyway, many ads I've seen in my area even say, "I won't sell to some kid."

Nigga have you ever seen an rx7?
>>
>>17667221
>>17667222
No, it's not retarded. If it's your first ride you're going to back into a pole or hop a curb or bump a tow hitch. You might not admit it but everyone does that stupid shit with their first car, and unless your dad made a pit crew out of you and your brothers you're going to forget to change the oil, and in a rotary you'll probably forget to run a premix or to properly check an apex seal. In short, you'll wreck it. Do that to an rx7 and you're an absolute dick. And yes, many people spend a lot of time and money restoring these cars, if you'd said you were looking for an FC, I might not have mentioned it, but looking for an FD, yeah people aren't going to jump at the chance to let their carefully restored pussy magnet track star go to some drooling teenager looking for his first car.
>>
>>17667244

Yes, both FC and FD. They are not lifted trucks, but definitely bigger than a Miata.
>>
>>17667194
It IS like buying a dog a rotary is a big commitment. You're talking about buying a rare car and you know fuck all about them
>>
Rx7 is only worth driving with an LS or coyote swap, fight me
>>
>>17667248

>yeah people aren't going to jump at the chance to let their carefully restored pussy magnet track star go to some drooling teenager looking for his first car.

Well, maybe they shouldn't sell their cars then.

>If it's your first ride you're going to back into a pole or hop a curb or bump a tow hitch.

Might be my first to own, but certainly not the first to drive. You're acting like I am about to buy some 700 hp Challenger, and not some Japase sport car with 200 something horses, with hardly any torque thanks to the rotatory engine.

I don't have an issue remembering how to take care of things, my dude. I run a business myself.
>>
I swear to god if I see a news story next month about some retarded andorran wrapping a mint fd around a tree ill find you and break your kneecaps
>>
>>17667254

So? I'll learn. Since when you do have to be part of some special obscure kid club with forbidden knowledge to buy a fucking car, dude?

What am I buying, a fucking Countach?
>>
>>17667250
They're really no bigger than a miata on the inside lol. I've owned an fd for a couple years AND a mia ta. I had to get a smaller steering wheel for both
>>
>>17667263
just take good care of the engine. OIL
>>
>>17667263
A countach is easier to maintain than a FD lmao Jay Leno has like 90,000 miles on his countach
>>
>>17667265

It's been a while since I've seen an FD, but I dunno. Even if that was the case, I would be willing to spend money on an aftermarket Wheel for an FD, certainly not for a Miata.
>>
>>17667266

Alrighty, I will. Who knows, I might just get one with a busted engine and swap it if it's going to be this much trouble.

>>17667267

Really, what's so freaking hard about maintaining a rotatory? I've seen a re-build video online and it seems like the easiest thing ever to do, I can't imagine pre-mixing fuel is going to be so fucking complicated I can't wrap my head around it.
>>
Holy shit just buy a miata you imbecile. You're going to end up with a 20,000$ paperweight in a week. Lmao you'll flood the engine the first time you start the thing
>>
>>17667258
>I run a business
>already know how to drive
>knows nothing about the car he wants to buy
>yet I'm looking for my FIRST CAR
So you have your license or does that come later too? And it's not as simple as going to the store, I already know you're gonna search forever for an FD, show up with cash in hand and fail, the type of person with a 10k rx7 for sale is going to pick the buyer.

The reason these cars are all built into turbo track stars is because that's what they are, they're not dd material. I also drive Japanese sports cars as my daily (mk2/3 supra, 300zx and Datsun 280zx, subaru xt) and I am telling you, the driving habits you've described ITT are not the driving habits of an rx7. Just find something else, man. There are better options. For a first car I'd recommend something like the v6 camry, it's hard to find the 5 speed version but you'll get used to stick and 200+ hp car. Or a BMW, nobody will care if you bump those and dent them.
>>
>>17667272
>this much trouble.
thats a shitty attitude. it is not that hard. just get educated. desu I dont think it is a good first car. you are probably gonna rip open the gas atleast once and oversteer into a tree.
>>
>>17667281

>So you have your license or does that come later too?

Learning about the rotatory maintenance seems to be as basic as watching a 15 minute video on YouTube, so I have no idea what the fuck you are on about. Of course I have my license.

>v6 camry

Hahaha, how about you buy yourself a bad dragon dildo and stick it up the ass?

>nobody will care if you bump those and dent them.

You should have started here, which your main worry really. Get over it dude, I can buy an FD if I want to.
>>
>>17667283

I have been watching videos about dorito maintenance, even watched a re-build. Seems pretty simple to me. I understand now that the dorito engine needs a shit ton of oil due to the big amount of friction that goes on with the silly ápex seals, if the seals malform, combustión goes up the shit and everything breaks. It's not that complicated to understand.
>>
>>17667284
Oh yeah, faggot? I live in DC. Go ahead and grab an rx7 and meet me at summit point down in WV and I'll smoke the dogshit out of your meme car in any v6 camry. Then after I win, you drop the facade and sell your car at a loss for a lifetime of bus passes.

Either way, buy me a v6 camry and a ticket to whatever hole in the wall you call home, I have no qualms about teaching kids about driving. Just make sure it's a round trip.

Nah, I'll buy the FD even if I have to buy a half rotten one. Now more than ever, just to put it up yours.

The rx7 also gets veey hot inaide due to little insulation in the transmission tunnel and also because the exhaust is much hotter than a normal car so it just radiates into the cabin. Okay, I'll bite. Absolutely do not fucking buy an FD as your first car, as a daily driver, or if you only have 15k to put into it. I got one last year for $7500, and despite going over an extensive list of checks when I went to look at it and test drive, it turned out to be an absolute basket case. Although most of /o/ knows fuck all about rotaries or how their various seals work, the reliability memes are 100% true. An FD WILL break on you frequently, and without warning. I wouldn't even recommend getting it as your first project car. Wait until you've had some experience in that realm before you dive into a rotary vehicle.

Like I said, I checked it thoroughly. The engine didn't have low compression, bad seals, overheating problems, or anything like that. One of the cast iron plates had damage to it which was hidden by the oil pan and subframe. That, in turn, caused it to have a non-fixable leak which I had originally chalked up to being improper sealing of the oil pan (a common problem with 13b's, especially if they've been rebuilt). Additionally, SAE bolts had been used on the adjacent engine mount instead of the proper metric ones, so the threads were totally ruined. Thankfully, the money I saved by haggling the price all the way down to $7500 (on account of the oil leak I discovered after test driving) was enough to cover the cost of a new engine.

Hey OP. I've got a 1982 FB RX7 with the 12a engine. Here's the quick answer. As a first car? Absolutely not, unless you have lots of money.

Long answer? As a first car, I would suggest to not get it and just get the NA Miata instead. It's not because of the power or anything like that but if this is your first car, chances are you dont have alot of money and wouldn't like to constantly have to work on your car and fix it. Lemmie tell you why. The rotary engine is fun, but its a total piece of shit in almost every other way. It's awful on gas and the reliability is garbage. I can almost bet that there will be a few replies to this post saying shit like "it can be reliable if you follow the schedule!" which is totally true. But is having to follow a strict maintenance schedule that YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT SKIMP OUT ON make it just as reliable as other cars? I don't think so. Of course you should never neglect your car, but hey, shit happens right? Sometimes you gotta put it off, and you can do that just fine on almost any car, but you're really risking it with the rotary, ESPECIALLY A TURBO ONE. Also the gas thing? How's 13-15 highway out of a 1.3l engine sound? Yeah it's pretty pathetic.

Now you're probably thinking, can't I just rebuild it if the engine blows? Sure, but here's what no rotard will ever tell you. 99.999% of the time you cannot just buy that rebuild kit for a thousand bucks and be on your way. When the seals in your RX7 blow, they almost always gouge the side of the housing, damage the rotor, and can even ruin the irons, which you cannot reuse again.

It's a fun engine. It's really fun and the power delivery feels really good. I love mine but I'm not a delusional idiot. There's a reason why the design has been discontinued for the most part. It's not a good first car and it's not a good car if you can only have one car either.
>>
>>17669839

You have opened my eyes. It is clear to me now that I must buy a FD chassis with a blown engine and place a reliable and powerful European V8. Perharps a V6, even
