>>17654779
Just go to a muffler shop and have them build you a catback the way you want it to sound. It will cost you sure substantially less, look better, and sound just as good if not better.

how do they build it the way you want it to sounds. like how do you know what the end product is going to sound like

is going full turboback a waste for me if I care just about having my car sound nicer? otherwise I drive extremely normal and don't hoon.

is going for a popular branded exhaust a meme?

Because they're normie boy racer mememobiles. Faggots go out and drop payments on a 35k vehicle so they can pretend to be enthusiasts. Their engines can't handle boost and are infamous for throwing rods. Plus they have unnecessarily heavy and complex boxer engines that are huge and obsolete. I live in Colorado and everyone and their fucking grandmother drives a fucking Subaru. I'm sick of them.

Popular branding is just that, popular branding. It doesn't mean it's the best product. And what sounds good is an opinion.

A muffler shop has so many options and you will be able to tell the guys how you want the car to sound, and then they will choose a muffler that will get you the type of sound and volume you want.

Also a turbo back is a complete waste of money if you don't need it for performance. Just go get a different muffler welded in for $200.
>>
>>17656040
Looks really clean
>>
So I've always wanted a BRZ but now that I have the money, I also have a toddler. Should I still get one and use it for DD and track?

I have 2 other cars for family outings and I could always fit my family in the BRZ for quick trips if needed. I'm ok with the WRX but it just doesn't hit the same spot for me.

>>17656653
1st, 4th, and reverse are pretty much shot and the interior smells like really burnt coffee(transmission I am guessing) then it will need a new clutch and axles.

>>17656655
168,000 But it had it's engine "bulletproofed" for about 2700 15000 miles ago according to the previous owner. (he had shop records not just going by his word.)
>>
>>17656689
He did a full engine rebuild or just swapped in a "low mile" one? I'd just get the work done if you really do have a healthy engine. Do a compression/Leakdown and a block test to make sure!
>>
>>17656699
It was a full engine rebuild I'm pretty certain, I don't know a ton about this stuff but the receipt says things like. "replaced head gaskets with engine out of car, reseal oil pump, water crossover" etc.
>>
>>17656724
If you enjoy the car just get the work done, it'll be a good feel knowing you have a reliable car. Sucks to see that panel rust however
>>
>>17654624
Because they're chav cars
>>
>>17656735
lel, yeah the rust is the exact reason why I'm so hesitant. If that rust wasn't there I would be seriously considering an EJ20R swap. But, if it's reliable I figure I could get by for a couple years without putting any more cash into it besides regular maintenance and have a reasonable amount of money saved up.

I'm just a mechanic and I'm used to working on them. They need a lot of parts around every 100k but they can do maybe 300~350k MILES that is before you'll do a rebuild of anything IF you maintaine it. I stay away from the turbo cars, yes everyone loves them, but they are starting to get old and just generally need more maintenance. Still, I drive a my2000, phase 2 ej22, gf8.
>>
>>17657139

Also rust. I had a bug eye that I bought when I lived in Canada, and was only supposed to drive it to get back. I ended up putting like 50k on it and had to park it cause it was so rusted that you couldn't perform any type of maintenance.

how come subarus make so little power? i know a guy with a fully built engine and some upgrades to the turbo and hes only making like 350-400 whp, probably way less than 400 though.
>>
>>17658298
Because 4cyl engines can't handle ALOT of power reliably, he can get alot more out of it but not for long
>>
>>17658077
Look towards the Sport. Felt like a WRX lite when i test drove one
>>
>>17658298
Like with all engines, if you have the money to replace the shit that brakes then it doesnt matter how long it lasts. Who cares if the turbo lasts 6 months if you have more waiting and you just wanna make a shit ton of power.

What is it that makes this engine he has fully built?

I will say the new ones are pretty under-powered.

>>
>>17658819
Because the fogs and sunroof are part of a package?
>>
>>17658868
No, not without a RHD swap or a single turbo conversion. The sequential turbo setup is in the way of the LHD steering column and brake booster. Your best bet for staying twin turbo is either buying a 1995-99 Legacy Postal wagon (RHD for mail use, 100% US legal) and swapping it or waiting for the JDM 1993 Legacy twin turbo to be legal to import next year. 1995 would be the best year to get because it isn't OBDII and none of the JDM second gens were, adding wiring headache.

Bought the car for $1500, clean title, bottom end knock. Aftermarket bov, strut bar, exhaust, turbo timer, and some carbon fiber goodies for the interior.

So far ive got the motor on a stand and flipped over, oil pan is off. Found thin metal chunks in the oil pan. Main caps look good, con rods look good, cylinder walls look good too. Gonna pull the heads and see if I can find anything.

Sign up on the website, they may or may not approve you though and it'll take a while for a response. Like months a while.

As long as you fill out your monthly reports (how much you shilled) you get $150 to spend on stuff on their website for yourself and to give out every 3 months, it does expire though so you have to keep up with it. You also get 5 $500 off coupons to give to people who want to buy a new Subaru.

>GC WRX/GT sedan
>GD WRX wagon
>GD WRX sedan (least likely I'll find one)

I have a really hard time making that choice

Then take the wagon off your list, it's clear you don't want it and are just looking for confirmation for the one you do want. So get either one of the sedans. Both will be about the same.

I don't know honestly. Wagon is easier to get, cheaper and will most likely be in better condition than the GC sedan. GD sedan is most likely out of my reach.

>>
>>17661409
EJ207 is the strongest oem engine available
255/257s are inherently weaker
FA20s have shit rods and carbon build-up, when they've got a bit more development in them they'll surpass the EJ
>>
>>17661425
how about the ej205?
>>
>>17661550
the 205/255 are the WRX open deck engines
By default the 207/257 STi variants are better due to their semi-closed decks and nitrated crank, the 207 has forged pistons also.

I'm trading in my 2017 wrx for a 2018 sti in a few weeks. I feel like in ten years there won't be any cars like the sti left on the market that aren't obscenely expensive. Or gas will be $30 a gallon. Either way the car enthusiast market is set to collapse with electricuck and driverless bs driving all investment in r&d. I wish i had the $ to get a new sti and store it as investment.

I figured you knew that, but met an idiot at a meet that had a 400whp Bugeye wagon and he couldn't figure why he's gone through two transmissions. Idiot.

I just recently bought a 2003 WRX with a JDM Bugeye front clip and the STI wing. It was almost stock when I got it besides an uppipe and K&N intake. Now I've got a catless bellmouth DP with an XPT Stage 2 tune, and it should be making the same power the JDM STI would have made(~250whp). Also hooked up the intercooler sprayer.
Also took off the fugly stock WRX wheels and got some much nicer Craigslist wheels and painted them gold. Car actually looks proper now. I've got a brake rotors and pads swap to do this weekend and I'm painting the calipers like the JDM STI.

480whp is extremely naughty. What is its current issue? I think a scoopless Impreza hood would look fantastic on this since you only have a small rear lip and a front mount. Wastegate dump pipes are sweet.
It'd be neat to have a quite exhaust with separate wastegate dump pipes. Quite when cruising, and loud as all hell when the wastegate opens under throttle.

It spun a rod bearing, scored the crank when it did. The block is fine due to it being a sleeved block, but the crank needs fixing and it'll need a new rod as it was cooked.

Before that the only modifications I had done were bigger injectors and forged pistons. Cams were stock, crank was stock, even the rods were stock and I made 400whp without issue. Eventually though, it couldn't handle it anymore and also spun a bearing then too. Instead of just throwing another regular block in I decided I want more torque and power while being more reliable, so it was bored to a 2.7, threw on a bigger turbo and replaced everything with forged parts.

Well, the shop I had it at insisted I take the car since we couldn't get any higher numbers on the stock fans and the small IC piping I had. It needed more cooling and was getting too hot on the dyno. It was fine to drive on the street though, which I did drive it on the street, for 4 days until it spun another bearing.

The shop is trying to say it was my fault, the machine shop is suggesting it was a faulty crank from BC, but "doesn't want to throw anyone under the bus" so I'm stuck here with no real answer, I'm getting frustrated as fuck as I haven't seen my car since last October, which I only had it for 4 days and before that didn't see it since April 2015, which is when I started to get all this shit done.

TL;DR - It spun a rod bearing. Also I've thought about going scoopless, the issue is finding a decent scoopless hood that someone isn't asking $500 for because who fucking knows why.
>>
>>17662992
That's some shit dude. At this point, you might need to find another shop. I can't imagine what they're waiting on or need this much time for.
Import a 207 and have built from the get it built by a well known shop.

You should be able to go to a junkyard or a partout for a regular Impreza and get the hood, just have it painted to match. Or if you have the money, have someone make you a carbon scoopless hood. Or go super cheap and buy one of the vents that replaces the hood scoop.

What?

>>17663090
It's only two guys working at the shop I go to, they just have so much work they get backed up really easily. They've been working on my car for years, but I get the vibe they don't want to deal with it anymore. I plan on going elsewhere once it's finished. I can't have my car sitting at a shop for 2 years straight, it's getting ridiculous at this point, regardless of how backed up they are.

As far as importing a 207, I was considering it, but a stroked 257 will make more power in the end. And seeing as the only point to a 207 is high rev and forged internals, it's pointless since I'm fully forged on a brand new block anywho. And I can already rev over 8k, so a 207 isn't gonna cut it.

I'm thinking about getting a cheap EJ motor and learning to work on them myself apart from simple maintenance. It's daunting having a built car like this and working on it, if you make a mistake it's never a cheap fix.

As far as the hood, I'm going to worry about that when I actually have the car back to do stuff to it.

Pic-not related, but what the car looked like when I first bought it to now.

Buy a Bugeye WRX. They have the 2.0 isntead of the shitty 2.5

That's the exact reason why I bought a Bugeye WRX instead of a Blobeye WRX when I was looking. The 2.0l is such a better engine than the 2.5l.
That's just the 205 too, the 207 is a whole different monster that is really the impressive one.
The Japanese have always kept the 2.0l to themselves for whatever reason.

>>17663247
The 207's head is substantially better flowing and designed for sustained high RPM. I believe the 207 also has under piston oil squirters? Could be wrong on that, but that's a feature you can't really build in easily.

And there's only so much power the chassis can take until you need a custom welded cage though and a 207 can make that. I've never heard of someone having issues with the 207, although that doesn't mean it won't have issues. I just haven't heard of them.

Maybe it's something I'll look into then. I never really thought about going with a 207. If I swap out engines I won't be going big turbo again though. It's fun, but only on the highways. Backroad hooning isn't really that fun in a big turbo car, too much lag. And all I like doing is running the mountains around here.

But the 207 would probably be better for that anyway. You've me thinking anon.
>>
>>17663582
The 2.5l engine was only created so Subaru could detune the engine and make similar power because they needed to meet stricter US emissions laws.
The 2.5l is literally a crude upsized version of the 2.0l.

If you want to make the same power with no lag, go with a twin charged system, or even easier, electric supercharger paired with a large turbo.
Yes, electric superchargers are real. Volvo is currently using them. There was a custom one on eBay for a while for for $800 that showed proof of 6psi at 7000rpm on a 2.0l engine. And it spooled instantly. It would be the perfect companion for a large turbo setup.

Otherwise cams and high boost on a midsized turbo on the 207 are the way to go. Consider methanol injection and E85. Methanol injection is dirt cheap, helps make power, and keeps incylinder temps down and detonation to a minimum.
>>
>>17663622
I'd go E85 right now if the closet station offering it wasnt 1 hour away. Lol. I was thinking about doing a meth setup though.

And as far as the 207, I didn't know all that. Never looked into it cause never really thought it was a useful option.
>>
>>17663637
The heads DEFINITELY flow better on the 207, Tomei did a big study on it. I could be wrong about the oil squirters but I believe that to be true.

You can even do water injection if you don't want to do methanol. It will lower intake temps, incylinder temps, and exhaust temps, just not add power. I was going to do it with my WRX but there's no point because I can easily make 300whp and then I need to swap the trans before making any more power! And I'm not doing that for another couple of years.

Good luck m8.

Is stock tune on 02-07 STI's bad for engine's health in long run or was that newer hatch models that suffered bad factory tunes?
