Yep, there was a leak at the base. Thought I had the adapter plate down tight but apparently not. Works better now, though still has a bit of a bog, though much more manageable than before.

Well now that you've corrected the vacuum leak your tune may no longer be correct.
>>
>>17651820
I did return the idle mixture with vacuum gauge....is it supposed to be done in drive for an automatic? That's how I did it.

As for the jetting and such, well, when I ordered the carb all I said was the that it was a 225 slant 6 at about 800ft ASL.

I did not find any other leaks with the carb cleaner, I sprayed all around the manifold, brake booster, carb plates, distributor.

Next step I guess is a compression test...

Had some boomer wanting to trade a 77 monza and 41 delux for my customline. Shame the delux was a rusted pos. Kept saying how it was rust free (car is covered in rust, floors are gone and there are holes everywhere). I wouldnt have minded the 5 min drive to look except he kept saying the 53 isnt worth anything compared to his "highly desired chevy."

>>17652081
Yes that's EGR, pull it off and turn it 180 degrees, rtv the bolt holes and the sides and run it like that to see if it runs better. The connection is on the inside of the device.
>>17652108
Not sure, mine doesn't have that. If yours has the doodad hooked to the air cleaner that's most likely why it's hesitating.
>>
>>17652124
As noted, that EGR pic is not my car. Should I just find a place to plug it in?

As for the other piece, it had an air cleaner like the pic, so it was just being sucked in BEFORE the venturies. Right now It's just got tape over it and it seems to be holding. It bolts onto the block right behind the #6 exhaust.
>>
>>17652148
Pretty good chances your EGR and all of the exhaust passages for it are completely plugged with Carbon, No one ever seemed to replace those back in the day

>>17652148
>As noted, that EGR pic is not my car. Should I just find a place to plug it in?
No, there is no external connection to the EGR plate even though it looks like there is. When the exhaust gets hot it pushes open a valve which lets the exhaust leak into the intake manifold. The only way to stop this is to flip the whole thing 180 degrees or spend like $70 for a block off plate.
If your 225 is old though it might cause it to knock a little bit.

>As for the other piece, it had an air cleaner like the pic,
Not sure if we're on the same page exactly.
I'm talking specifically about the OSAC valve, The consensus is that it does nothing but make your engine run like shit just to meet emissions.

Why don't you take a picture of your engine?>>17652204
And this, my EGR was caked but still functional, blocking it off reduced some of the hesitation.
>>
>>17652228
>Whyt don't you take a picture
I will when it's day. Anyway, I don't think it's OSAC, it plugged into the bottom of the air cleaner, with no valve on that end of the hose.
>>
>>17652305
I'll have to go take a gander at mine then tomorrow and see if it have it. It's probably not causing any problems though.
>>
>>17652320
I doubt it'd cause problems since it vented into the air cleaner and so wouldn't use vacuum,
>>
>>17652354

>>
>>17652108
>>17652124
That's a check valve for an exhaust air injection system.

That was the '60s/70s solution for having too much unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust: Jam some fresh air in there and let it burn.
Or, y'know, get catalyzed.

Completely unnecessary unless you live in an area which requires emissions tests.

>His parking brake doesn't automatically release when put into gear
Also if you didn't even notice the lack of power, that means your brake barely holds and you drums and/or cable needs adjusting.
Properly working E-brakes shouldn't even let the car move when put in gear unless you give it more gas
>>
>>17652973
Probably not very.

Worst case, you toasted the shoes and drum. Did you smell hot brakes? How hot were the drums when you stopped and realized what had happened?

Best case, the parking brake cable is out of adjustment and it did nothing.

But, you should find a hard-packed dirt lot somewhere and do a skid test. Get up to about 20 mph and mash the brakes.
Put it in park/neutral, get out, and look at the skid marks.

If the rears don't skid, you should pull the drums and have a look in there to see why they're not working.
>>
>>17652925
Nice Jeep, and they are easy to keep running reliably if you do preventive maintenance instead of waiting for shit to break. Parts are cheap so what's not to like?

If I didn't need pickup trucks I'd get (or assemble from aftermarket parts) a CJ-7 and mod it to suit my preferences.

I'm about to send in my order to summit for my transmission swap and some other odds and ends on the Pontiac 400. Could someone look this over to see if I have ordered something wrong. I'm reusing my starter from the 403 and the water pump pulley. I've got motor mounts coming from somewhere else and the power steering/ alternator bracket. I already have a flexplate and the motor is coming with the distributor, plugs, and plug wires.

>Best case, the parking brake cable is out of adjustment and it did nothing
I'm hoping this is the case because it's been pretty weak already. Truck still stops, so brakes are alive. Have to pump them sometimes, the pedal went all the way to the floor the other and scared the shit out of me, had to kill the motor and let it stall out in an empty lot and wait for the drums to cool down
>>
>>17653268
That's all it is really, it's another transmission that has a high and low.

Fun thing is that you can turn a 3 speed effectively into a 6 speed with a gear vendors.

You can also have two reverse speeds.

It's air injection. Like I said in >>17652819

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondary_air_injection

> During engine idle, brief but periodic negative pressure pulses in the exhaust system draw air through the aspirator valve and into the exhaust stream at the catalytic converter. This system, marketed as Pulse Air, was used by American Motors, Chrysler, and other manufacturers beginning in the 1970s

Chevrolet used a similar system, except with a pump.

Absolutely, if the choke isn't adjusted properly for each season then it could be over fueling the car longer than need be, otherwise if that's adjusted, then the idle mixture screws need to be adjusted as well

Quick update on the 400 swap if anyone is interested. I'm currently planning everything out on where the fuel lines and transmission lines are going to run. I guess the factory ran the fuel lines across the frame on Pontiac 400 cars so I'm going to have to modify my line to do that too. Because of that I was curious if anyone ever used braided fuel line with those "AN" fittings? I'm thinking about upgrading to those at some point because that routing just seems like it would make a fuel boiling issue since it goes really close to the motor but it was factory so I guess it'll be okay. Other than that I've still got 2 weeks until the motor gets here and a huge ass summit order should be here at any time.

How common the car is plays a huge part in it being a "classic". Hell, the roundnose Ford pickup can now be considered a "classic" but god damn, I see a couple dozen each day. There were billions upon billions of those damn things made.

In 30 years, when they've filtered through the Mexican landscaping crews and there's just a few left, yeah maybe they can be classics. But certainly not now.

As for the 4th gen Tercel, well, it's a superb little shitbox. Reliable and very economical.

Nice vette guy. I can't wait to get there, I would feel the same way. Mine is an iroc-z, sat since the end of last winter, started doing the body work and painting.

I've torn off the bumpers and fenders, got a rust free parts car for steel. Cut, welded and bent straight the entire drivers inner-fender. About a million spot welds. The whole side got damaged from previous owner. Also I've ripped out the whole a/c system, rewired and routed everything nice. I'm going to paint the engine bay and get the fenders back on to paint. The rear is already done and ready to be put back together, new bumpers and everything.
My only problem is I'm trying to graft on a new quarter panel, I've been working around that for now until I have help. Haven't touched the driver door yet because I know there's about as much bondo on it as the quarter had. I'm using a new one from donor car instead. Aside from that I would like to have it all together, sanded and primered by the end of fall. Probably next year will I actually have it ready for paint. It just feels like eternity.
>>
>>17667774
Because it's what I deal with every day, in service, diagnosis, and repair. I've dealt with carbs only a handful of times in my life. Its also a much more reliable year round fuel delivery system.

It's not just turning screws to tune it, you have to be well versed in carbs to know what to fix when something breaks. Float level, jets, accelerator pumps, etc. The level of discussion about carb issues in this general alone proves they can be tricky.

But, I am willing to learn, because I don't feel like paying the price for efi for my truck. I doubt I'd get any better fuel mileage with it anyway. Whenever my carb takes a shit, I'll dive into getting more familiar with them. I've rebuilt a 2 barrel ten years ago with my dad, that's the extent of my experience.
>>
>>17668106
I can see where you're coming from. I really wouldn't say there disadvantages when it comes to FI vs carbs. Carbs are cheap and simple really. Lots of people just like it because there is something almost nostalgic and hot rod-y about them. It's old school. Some would say, who needs injection when all you want to just dump as much gas into it as possible. A finely tuned carb on top of a supercharger and or high rise intake, is a vicious machine. Then there's those LS guys...
>>
>>17668293
I do like the old school feel of carbs. Partially why I also don't want to go to efi. I really do want to learn more about carbs, I just don't really have the opportunity to. But I will do my carb at some point when it needs it.

Kek, I actually am an LS guy, if you saw my vette I posted. But I'm not "one of THOSE LS guys". I know who you're talking about and they are annoying as fuck.

Those are indeed for the trans cooler. Aftermarket coolers that run outside the radiator are generally safer and better. They keep the trans temp cooler and there's no risk of destroying the transmission from coolant contamination if the cooler busts.

Personally, I would keep the external aftermarket cooler and just plug off the radiator cooler. I've been thinking about putting an external on my crown vic actually.

I'd start with a full tune up of Plugs, wires, cap and rotor, or at minimum, plugs and wires if the cap and rotor look okay.
Also since it's fuel injected, the Crank sensor on these are notorious for dieing and causing a no start. I'd replace it as well

First thing to know with any EFI is fuel pressure.

That said these were notorious for TPS's developing glitches right off idle and causing stumbling and also the Exhaust Valve Position Sensor (EVP) on the EGR valve doing the same thing and causing the engine to stumble and sag under accel as the EEC tried to work with the erratic signal resulting in overfeeding of EGR. That one's easy to check. Just pull the vacuum hose off the EGR valve and if the stumble goes away you found your issue. My money's on TPS though.

>>17669703
>88 EEC-IV
>Crank Sensor
Yeah, naw. You'd have to go back the the EEC-III for a crank sensor. The IV has a Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) in the distributor that does like to go bad about as often as the Thick Film Ignition (TFI) module on the side of the distributor. Shame it's such a pita to replace.

Can someone explain electric chokes? Looks like cletus tried putting one in. Looks like he routed it through the turn signal fuse and blew the fuse. As far as I can tell, the car already has some sort of choke system because pushing the gas pedal down helps a ton with starting the engine. Sorry for being a retard, never had a car with a choke before

jesus christ that choke is set far far rich.
Unscrew the 3 hold down screws a bit rotate that 100 degrees clockwise, then splice new wire onto the black ground wire and ground it somewhere.

Splice the positive red wire onto a voltage source, should be battery voltage when the key is on and the engine is running, I spliced mine into the power wire for my wiper motor.

After all that, pump the gas pedal twice, wait around 30 seconds, give the gas pedal a shot again, then look at the choke plate on the carb to make sure it's opening.

After a few minute drive, the choke plate should be open all the way, if it's not, the electric choke itself could be dead
>>
>>17675796
>After all that, pump the gas pedal twice
I should have added "start the car" after that point
>>
>>17675796
Will do, thanks. Do you have any idea why the red wire was hooked up to a fuse/why it blew? It was the turn signal fuse. I'm guessing pumping the gas opens the throttle which somehow operates the choke?
>>
>>17675840
It should never have been hooked up to a fuse in the first place, PO wasn't so smart. Pumping the gas is supposed to set the fast idle and close the choke plate on carbed cars, makes it easier for cold starts. The next kick to the throttle kicks down the linkage on the choke and brings the idle down to a slightly fast or normal idle

Thanks bruv I will get right on that. You can probably infer that I'm most familiar with chrysler products, I was considering moving on the lincoln real quick to pick up this ridiculously clean '79 cordoba, but I took my gf for a fancy dinner in the linc and it was so fucking comfy that I think I'll keep it. Guess it's time to read up on ferd, hopefully I can get the dog out of this low output 302 and turn it into a respectable motor
>>
well it's been a few hours and I still don't know jack shit. This is my daily now so I gotta ask, what are the first things I should be replacing on the non-ho 302? Would swapping a mustang engine be easier or should I just swap the heads and cam? Motor has 130k miles on it.

I'd like to make ~250 instead of the wimpy 140 or so it's doing right now. Good for a daily with reasonable mpg and good reliability
>>
>>17677716
>reasonable mpg
get a spreadbore intake and carb

You can search through some junkyards for some old ford explorers if you want to build a new engine for it, those semi modern 302's put out some decent numbers. If you want to keep your old motor then 302s have some pretty cheap parts. You can secure halfway decent aftermarket heads for that motor of yours on ebay for around $1200 for both. Just try to research what pistons you have in it so you can calculate the C/R.

for cams don't go crazy on selecting the specs. sometimes even just an RV cam or a single step above that is enough to wake up a smogged out motor. As a general rule of thumb the more radical the camshaft, no matter how good it sounds, will sacrifice MPG and driveability and also bump the powerband up more and more.

in selecting a cam for MPG and driveability you'll want to choose a cam that will produce as much amount of power(both HP and toque) as low as possible in the powerband so you can use as little throttle as possible to get up to speed / cruise.

It's not quite necessary but you can also change out the rear end ratio to get some highway gears in there, which will improve your MPG dramatically. try 2.75:1 or 3.00:1 gears. Turning only around 2,000 RPM at 65 is nice.
>>
>>17675903
Yuk. Use loctite. The bolts could just be backing out. I had that problem before.

>>17677716
I would just fix what's wrong first and go from there, I'm sure it'll run much better. Somebody wrote out a whole list of things to check first.
>>
>>17677282
>>17677716
I'd probably hit it with gears first. 3.73 should pep it up a bit. Also the AOD valve body prior to 1990 is a known dog so you might look into updating that too.

On Windsor Fords the weak spot is the heads every time. Followed by exhaust manifolds. I'd probably just throw an Explorer motor at it if I were going that far. ECM on that is speed-density so it doesn't have a lot of room for engine mods in the software. You'll either have to get the ECM number off of it, and it's in a pita location to the left of the steering column, and then check with a site like moates.net to see if that ecm is supported by QuarterHorse. Or maybe SCT. If it's not supported you'll have to do something like convert the car to a mustang mass-air ecm. Lots of work for a Town Car imo.
>>
>>17677903
I dunno why Ford just can't make good heads. The Super Cobra Jet has decent ports but shitty chambers and the Boss heads are really good chambers but shitty ports.

>>17676707

Thanks for the advice guys. If I understand correctly, the only things needed to "convert" to HO are cam, intake, heads, correct firing order and appropriate ECU? And possibly pistons if there are clearance issues?

There are some great deals on 302 parts around TX, one guy in particular is selling everything I listed about for like $150. There's also this compete engine for 300:

The hole in the base of the air cleaner assembly is to attach a hose to the fresh air inlet side of the pcv system in order to bpth supply filtered air to the pcv system and also to carry crankcase gases to the carb under acceleration where vacuum is low and the pcv valve functions poorly or not at all. That is in really good shape. All classic purchases are a gamble. You never really know if something is better is going to come along. I assume 500 euros is equivalent to about 750 dollars, at most 1000 dollars. In the U.S., running and driving, thats a good deal.

You're just going to have to be okay with maybe having to spend some money on it, but you will be doing that regardless on a car that old.

There is no car on the face of the earth that is 40 years old and does not need work, unless it just got a complete rebuild and restoration.

Finally got started working on this thing. Cracked the spark plugs off and filled the cylinders with ATF, going to let it sit for a couple weeks now and see if that frees things up.

My question now is... wtf do I do next? If this works and gets the engine unseized should I just hook a 6V battery up, turn the key (with the plugs out obviously) and see what happens? I was staring at the engine bay this weekend kind of at a loss for where to even start.

Originally red, a slightly different shade though. It was resprayed yellow at some point but there were a lot of areas where the original red was visible after removing a few things.

I know a couple of you are knowledgeable about the Ford 302, so hopefully I can get some insight. I'm scoping out a slightly built-up 5.0 for my Bronco, and I want to put the GT40P headers on there rather than the E7TE headers. That'll bump my compression up to about 9.9:1 though, vs the stock 9ish:1. Will I have to run mid-grade gas rather than regular?

Yes sir. She's under the knife still, motor coming out next weekend! Cleaning/buttoning up the 350 now.
>>
>>17688329
It would be a better idea to run midgrade or premium, unless you want to retard your timing a hair

Get Cylinder one on TDC compression stroke and make sure the rotor is pointing at cylinder 1 then go from there

I would strongly advise against just hooking up a battery and attempting to start it. Chances are, some(if not most) of the wiring is rotten and exposed from years of exposure. With my chrysler, I did just as you have done, but I disconnected everything at the starter solonoid, and just ran the starter off of a button. This way, if there is some questionable electrical, you won't fry everything under the dash or potentially cause a fire. Also, this way you can use 12 volt just to play with the starter and get everything moving before repairing the old 6 volt system. Maybe remove the starter and just run it off of a jumper wire, to get it unstuck. Work it in and out a few times to make sure it properly engages and disengages. Manually turn the crank/fan to attempt to get the engine unsiezed. I left a cap full of marvel mystery oil in my cylinders for about 2 weeks and it broke free first try. Throw some new points, condesor, resistor, and 6 volt coil on it. Take the carb off and clean it with gasoline, making sure the secondaries operate properly as they tend to size up as well. Disconnect the fuel line at the pump, and just run a 5 gallon gas can to the fuel pump until you can have the tank cleaned( if it has old rotten gas in it, that is) once all of that has been done, attempt to start the engine. Leave the distributor loose so that you can have a friend turn it to adjust the timing while you operate the starter from a button/not the key. Once it fires up, let it run gently for a minute, and if you or someone you know is capable, you can essentially 'steam clean' the engine to help try and break up all the crap that has accumulated on the inside of the block. Maybe watch some videos first, but the simple version is to pour some water(not too much, not too little) into the carb while running at a higher rpm. It's a little tricky to keep the engine running while doing this, but hell. It does wonders if done correctly.

Pic is my 1954 chrysler new yorker deluxe with the 331 Hemi, and it had been sitting since 1995. When I did all of the above, the fucker smoked and knocked and shot rust and other unidentifiable shit out of the exhaust for about 15-20 minutes straight, then ran like a fucking top. Played with it for a bit to get the timing right, then got excited and took it for a drive. Did 50mph quietly like it was no problem at all. Happiest fucking day of my life... there's no felling in the world like bringing something back to life...
