Youre not gunna see very big gains from doing just breather mods on the 1.6. At the least, youre gunna need some ecu tuning, just get a megasquirt. Also, save up and do the 1.8 swap. Its just not worth it in the long run to tune the 1.6

If you want any serious power out of these motors without spending a ridiculous amount, you pretty much gotta go FI.

You can spend 5-10k building an N/A motor and end up with like 150 HP. With that same budget you could build a turbo car and be pushing 350+ to the wheels, which is absolutely insane for a car this small.

If i had the 1.6, id strip all the interior i could, do body bracing and rollbar, delete emissions equipment & burp tank, window wash bottle, power steering, do CAI and muffler/tailpipe. Adjustable shocks with stiff springs, lightest 15x8 wheels i can find w some sticky 205 tires, weld the diff, maybe bucket seat/steering wheel. Keep it simple/ reversible, keep it cheap, invest in mods that will carry over into an engine swap.

I have the1.6 liter engine for my miata and I'm not sure what to do with it. I can turbo it and probably get 220hp before I have to start thinking about forging rods.
However I could get a vvt engine for like 500$ and swap it in and gain 50~hp very reliably.
Most of not all of the turbo parts on the 1.6 would carry over to the 1.8 when I inevitably blow it up. What should I do first?

It's a lucky car, not only did it avoid the early NB's thrust bearing issue, it didn't get totaled after the PO dumped the clutch into the back of something. The hood's a little creased, the bumper's not quite straight, and the passenger headlight has a broken mount, but it all works fine, the frame is straight, and the frame legs were untouched by the impact. Seems like it was just driven under a truck's rear bumper, judging by the paint damage and the light gash across the Mazda emblem. It tracks beautifully straight and handles consistently.

I discovered the previous owner's history with the vehicle as a result of a negative Google review on the dealer I got it from. The couple who owned it traded this Miata for a Ranger and the Ranger blew up. They had some kind of Christmas tree farm and I found Christmas tree needles in the ashtray. Isn't the internet great?

I went with a shitbox Miata because I wanted to actually have to fix things (I am taking automotive technology atm). The general wear and the crash damage give it wabi-sabi, the fact that it's a little worn from now 157,000 miles makes it more beautiful to me. I'm replacing damn near everything I can and we're going for 250,000mi and many track days before I consider getting rid of it.

is the 90 hp version of the NA any good?

If you can get a vvt engine for that cheap then absolutely go that way. And THEN turbo it. You will have a much better base to start with and will be able to get more power before you have to worry about the bottom end. If you plan to go turbo in the future you might as well do it right the first time.

Anyone knows how easy it is to replace a NA engine bay fusebox? my main relay keeps moving around, and I think it might be time to replace it. I can't find any real guide for replacing that portion of the wiring harness.

Okay so:

If your fusebox is loose itself, that isn't much of a problem as it'd just mean a depinning job and not crossing your wires as you reconnect it

If your components are loose inside the fusebox, its likely that the terminals have become buggered and are falling out of the fusebox/not holding the components how they should causing the issues. Possible that the plastic of the fusebox has started breaking up though.

HOWEVER if your terminals ARE shagged, you'll probably want to go round investigating all of them.

At that point, i'd just scrap the loom and get another... Not worth the hassle re-terminating everything especially as the conductors might be corroded.

I've noticed that its really just the main relay that just moves left and right, I had to use electrical tape, and pin it down so it didn't move as much.

I've tried 3 different types of relays, and they all seem to move around. Wanted to attempt to replace the box entirely, but it seems like that one giant cable can't actually be separated without cutting/re-soldering

I would undo the fusebox, cut the tape/sleeving off and give the terminals for the relay a pull from the backside. If they pop out you've found your culprit - you can just weather proof electrical tape to cover the branch again.

Somebody please give me the motivation I need to work on my NA. Been super depressed recently and I haven't even touched the thing in like 2 weeks. Went to drive it Tuesday but the battery was dead from sitting.

So I got an used ND. I'm not a drifter or anything but love spirited driving and want to not kill myself with oversteer. Previously I drifted a 240sx, most controllable with e-brake, clutch kick I would sometimes spin out. With the ND I threw it into controllable drifts with the throttle alone which I've never done before, haven't even tried the ebrake or clutch kicks yet. I realized traction control was on, I would probably spin out with it off, right? I'm kind of addicted to the feel now though, could I get longer more sustainable drifts with the traction off and maybe just handbrake? Never got taught how to throttle drift before tobh.

If you aren't upping the power any, the stock calipers are plenty. 4 wheel disks on a car that weighs 2200 lbs stops gud. If you need more brakes, some good pads, braided lines, hi temp fluid, and some slotted rotors will do the trick.
The NB sport brakes are alright but they don't fit over 14" wheels

I'm getting rid of the oem wheels on my nb2 (16x6.5) and going to 15x7.5. On most of the forums, dudes going to 15s go with xx5/50/r15 tires but the xx5/55/r15 tire is closer to the oem diameter even though it's larger. Would it still be better to do the smaller size because of acceleration/weight and all that?

It's up to you really. Using a lower profile tire usually gives you more road feel and makes the car sit a tiny bit lower to the ground. Also the increased acceleration as you mentioned. But it's a negligible difference at the end of the day

Hey fagg/o/ts, I'm looking at buying an NB (2000/2001 likely), and would like to know your experiences and tips. I like the look of the NA much better but I am afraid that they will require more maintenance due to their age. I have never used the back seats in my current car, and will be keeping it around, but will drive the miata as my DD, do ya'll miss the extra space on your daily commutes? Also how would the car be on an hour long highway commute? I would like the do some modifications at some point, likely suspension and mods and some light engine work. How would the car's reliability suffer with some breathing mods, a tune and daily hard driving.

Finally, which one of you has the red NA with a single racing seat and a roll bar in the Colorado Residence Inn?

You can easily cruise in 5th at 2k rpm and lug in 2nd. I have a habit of taking off from a standstill in very low rpm so every once in a while I stall the car, but never the miata, it can probably take off by just putting it in 1st and dropping the clutch.

Keep in mind that I do have the 1.8 engine, but I think 1.6 is similar in that regard.

When I bought it I thought its was running on three cylinders. Its that slow! It has no power, nothing! below 5000 rpm, and to get it to move at all you have to rev all the way to the red line. And tha'ts the 130hp 1.8, the 90hp 1.6 must be an absolute joke.

I've turbo'd it now and the car is transformed, still handles great and actually moves when you prod the throttle.

Another one of these questions because you all love to be asked the same shit everyday.

I'm interested in a 99 NB. Other than some hail damage and a ripped soft top, it looks pretty clean. Has under 100k miles too.

The biggest problem is I'm a fat fuck and I don't know if I'll fit. I fit in an S2K just fine, only problems being getting in and out. I am currently about 5'8 and 270 lbs (because being fat wasn't enough, I'm also a manlet).

What do you guys think?

How do you guys jack your Miatas up to get them on 4 jack stands?

I usually do the drivers side first, then the passenger side. That feels sketchy as fuck every time I do it though. I'm super paranoid that as I'm jacking the second side up it's going to push the Miata to the side and topple the jack stands over, and the car's going to fall on them and wind up with 2 jack stands through the floor.

it does. I believe the manual recommends using the sills because they are round and fit nicely into the claw of a jack stand. I've had jack stands slip off of a square frame so I don't really like using square things to hold shit up. The sills are made of steel and they are strong enough to hold up the car. The paint doesn't care either, it is like some sort of tough enamel. If I ever do scuff up the sills, I'll just paint over them with more black enamel.

Yeah they drift pretty good stock especially with LSD. Mine was on stock wheels and tires with the r package Bilsteins and it was a beast.

NA Miatas are not as taut, chassis-wise with a thinner track which contributes to twitchiness. High rear tire pressure will just make you spin. NBs have a little more weight, wider stance, and a stiffer chassis which makes them more controllable at high angle. What you should do is adjust the balance of the tire pressures, run a higher pressure in the rear and a lower in the front but ffs not 40 PSI. Start off with like 28f 31r and work up from there.

Get one with a proper diff, don't weld it like a retard, welding makes sliding easier but correcting the slide as you exit becomes far more difficult than it needs to be. Late NA with some stiffening and NBs with the Torsen are very easy to control whilst sideways and happily power-oversteer on wet pavement.

FM Voodoo II. Basically the same thing minus injectors and ECU. Its pretty good. Not sure if I'll ever go with the ECU and larger injectors, as it already has plenty of power at 8psi. Would have gone with the 2554 instead of the 2560 if I could choose again.

You've got that backwards mate. Longer, narrower cars drift with more stability, short and wide cars are more unstable during a drift. That's why the S chassis is so easy to drift, it's pretty long and narrow

Lots of drift cars have a wide track in the front to fit the angle kits in there but the rear is kept narrow with some positive camber to keep things stable and predictable

If you don't have use for your backseats buy a Miata then. And you don't need a car to tow things like furniture, because nowadays you can even buy groceries through Amazon and get it delivered you your home. Just consider not buying the car if you are in an stable relationship and you foresee having kids in a near future, unless you have money to own more than one car at the same time. In the case of the NA versus the NB though, the cars are the same length.
The thinner track at the back just promotes oversteer and allows for more controlled lateral weight transfer. It does not make the car "more stable" in a drift. Stability comes from toe angle and ARB stiffness.

I do everything myself. Reliability is fantastic, even with my self soldered megasquirt and road tuning. Only issue I've had is failing coilpacks but that's because I did a Toyota COP conversion and the coilpacks I bought were cheap knockoffs.

I have a 1994 NA8 so I have bigger brakes than the 1.6, also have racing fluid, hawk pads, and stoptech rotors. Honestly, the 1.6 brakes are fine for the street, you'll never overheat them.

My current car came with an LSD, but on my previous turbo miata I ran an open diff which I blew up.

Clutch setup is a FM lightweight flywheel, ACT 6 puck clutch, and ACT pressure plate.

Stock trans can take like 350whp, and the torsens can take about 400whp.
