Would an RX7 or 8 make a better DD?
>>
>>17649002
Neither.

Rotaries make shit DDs because they chug gas like nobodies business and you'll wear out your apex seals faster by driving it everyday. If I were to get an RX7 It would be a fun/weekend car.

How can I figure out where my oil is going? My check oil light keeps coming on and the dipstick is always low. There aren't any leaks in my driveway and I've never seen any blue smoke on a cold start.
>>
>>17649173
You just burn it all the time
>>
>>17649177
Isn't a sign of that blue smoke from the exhaust? I've never seen any. Does burning oil have a distinct smell? I do notice that higher up in the rpm range it starts to smell funny, but I think I've got an exhaust leak somewhere too.
>>
>>17649183
How fast are you losing it? You could easily be burning it away or possibly worse depending on the circumstance.
>>
>>17649183
Look the engine over for leaks. You might have to physically feel the back of it so do it when it's cold. If you're loosing oil this fast, there's either a major leak you'll be able to see/feel, or you're burning oil
>>
>>17649197
Well I'm not quite sure but I think I put in about half a quart a month ago when it came on and it went away and I noticed yesterday it was back on.

>>17649199
And the solution I'm assuming if its a major leak is an engine rebuild ?
>>
>>17649204
>I think I put in about half a quart a month ago
How many miles per half quart, give or take?
>>
>>17649204
Probably won't be an outright rebuild. Just a gasket that's worn out and needs replacing. If it's a valve cover gasket/oil pan gasket, you're in luck. But a head gasket or rear main seal is a lot harder/more expensive to fix
>>
>>17649214
Probably about 150 or so I guess
>>
>>17649235
OK, that's a really bad sign if it's not drooling oil everywhere on to the ground. Check your coolant, make sure your dipstick doesn't look frothy or white in any fashion, and get it down to a shop at your earliest convenience.

If you're lucky, they'll tell you it's some dumb seal that was leaking on the exhaust and that's why it all burned away and you only smelled it once in a while.
>>
Which one should I get?
>>
>>17649269
I always looked under the cap when adding more oil and its never been frothy, so coolant mixing in doesn't seem to be an issue.

I'd prefer to do the work myself, assuming its not something awfully complicated, as I'm still relatively inexperienced. I'll take it to get checked out though. Possibly when I get the transmission rebuilt, because it supposedly needs it (and I agree, theres definitely something wrong with it).
>>
>>17649292
I don't know how you lose that much oil over 150 miles with nothing on the ground, but it might help to clean the whole engine off so you can see if it's coming out of somewhere obvious.

There are only so many places that oil can go.
>>

I got a MB w124 200 from 87 and I've been having some problems with it and would appreciate some help. When I accelerate harder than normal(doing overtakes or maxing it out for example) The engine just sort of slows down and starts stammering, chopping and it's really fucking annoying.
It has an automatic choke or the carburetor is automatically controlled somehow and I think that's where the problem is because this mostly happens when the engine gets warm.

Any suggestions?

Am I retarded?
Learning to drive manual, everything is fine.
I can upshift, downshift, reverse, all is fine except for the fact that I can't get the car moving from first with both clutch and accelerator together.

My oil is a cm too high on the dipstick, but my car only takes 3.4 quarts of oil. Should I drain it?
>>
Where the fuck do I get started figuring out what makes cars good and not good at going fast, and on different terrain? Total newfag to racing here.
>>
>>17650447
It just takes time. Go find yourself some nice flat piece of empty space and practice getting the car moving with just the clutch. Once you have that down without having to think too much about it, get it to that point where it starts moving and give it a little gas. The way I was taught is you get the clutch to the biting point and then give it gas as if it was just a regular automatic car. Then once you get moving you fully take your foot off the clutch until you're ready to shift to 2nd.

Practice makes perfect

Old friend of my family has a z3 roadster 2.3 from 2000, not driven for a few years. Probably willing to let it go for a lot less than market value, I'm gonna offer about 4k. Is it a bit too much pose for not enough power?

You can test the resistance of the wires to see if they're good shape, and you'll have to take the cap off the distributor to see if its in good shape.

I used to have a z31 300zx back in the late 2000's until about 2012/13. I miss my car, and I'd like to have another one. At the same time, I want to learn more about really working on cars.

There is an 84 300zx automatic NA, and I can get it in running shape for about $250. Would it be worthwhile to convert it to a manual, and swap the engine to a turbo engine?

There are a lot of z31 turbo parts cars around me, and normal z31 parts. I can't imagine the swap would be extremely costly if I'm doing all the work.

Anyone ever convert an auto to a manual on a z31 300zx?
>>
>>17650914
Manual or auto?

They had a decent amount of power for what they were back in the day, but they're not fast by any means, a lot more power than the miata or the 4 cylinder Z3 had.

If its been sitting you'll probably need to pump in about 2grand worth of parts to get it reliable.

Also they can be boosted but it will cost the value of the car.
>>
Will an ecu chip make me fail emissions?

Nothing radical, stage one potentially. This would be put on a be golf alltrack

Manual.

Not sure if it hasn't been started at all, just driven pretty sparingly- his wife was the owner and she's unable to drive anymore.
>>
>>17651065
Providing its not falling apart 4grand is pretty low. I'd jump on it but as a BMW guy I'd know what I was getting into, and would be able to fix most of my own shit.

Are ARP studs + MLS gasket overkill for a Naturally Aspirated bmw M50 engine that is stroked to 3.0 (or 3.1) ? I want finish up the engine but my dad (still lives in the 70s 80s) says i should just do a normal gasket and reuse the old stock bolts.
>>
>>17651108
Why would it be overkill? If you can budget it why not? You may end up boosting it eventually anyhow.

Regardless I wouldn't reuse the old studs. I think almost all BMW head studs are TTY
>>
>>17651034
Update, its actually a turbo automatic zx for $250. Would the manual swap be worthwhile?

Does anyone have any experiences with buying a car from one of those insurance auction places like Copart? If so, how was your experience? I want to get a car that is the same model as mine as a spare parts car, but mine is in a sorta uncommon color. It seems that there is one with the same color nearby, but on the site it's reported as one that was never an option. Does anyone know if I can contact them to request a color code or something? The one that I am looking at looks like the color that I need, but the lighting in the picture is kinda bad.

My 97' Grand Cherokee is fucking me in the ass. The think shifts only if it feels like it and when it does shift it's either late at 3-5k rpm or jerky as fuck. Also if I stop too abruptly or inch up in traffic or at a light the thing will fucking stall. I've noticed that I can encourage it to shift my letting of the gas like it's a fucking manual, but even the success rate of that is inconsistent.

I don't know if the tranny's fucked, if the TPS is fucked, or if the PCM / the computer is fucked. What should I do? Anyone have this issue before?

In every fucking Porsche 911, Cayman or boxter they have a million blank buttons. You can spec your 911 turbo to the max and still have blank buttons everywhere, or buy a 100k Cayman and this is what you have to look at!!!

ok so buying a mx5 of some old guy, getting a good deal and its in really good condition. only trouble is the guy wants to wait a bit before selling it so he can take it to couple of car shows. Anyone had something like this happen before, and did you manage to get it earlier than they originally said? Im having this car one way or the other, but want it sooner cause im impatient. Wat do?
>>
>>17651789
Depends how much cash you have. If you gut it, make it AWD and pretty much make the only thing from an accord the chassis, sure.
>>
>>17651789
Drift? No. fwd cars cant be made into proper drift cars. Rally? maybe, not the best starting point but i guess as long as you have a decent engine and dont mind gutting it there would be worse starting points. best bet would be just to get something smaler and lighter for rallying, or something RWD for drift

Is a BBK ever worth it if you don't track your car? I think they're kickin' rad but I'm not sure of the point. My car's 4000lbs and has a 335x28/310x18 setup stock; I think they're 2-piston/1-piston. The ones I'm looking at are 355x32/345x28 with a 6-piston/4-piston setup.
>>

>>
>>17651126
Honestly unless you have your heart set on the car its just better to look for one that's already a manual. Typically manual swaps on vehicles that old cost the value of the car or more.
>>
>>17651930
Intake leak, or somethings wrong with your filter, or you have CAI.
>>
>>17649702
If its an 87 MB odds are its not Carbed. Most exported German cars came fuel injected in the late 80's

If its fuel injected, then something along your intake, either your MAF is having problems, or you have an intake leak, or some sensor is offsetting the Air/Fuel ratio. You're not likely to get good answers from /o/; so my suggestion is finding a MB specific forum and asking them.

FJ Cruiser and Jeep Wrangler are pretty low-tech in terms of their construction and interiors. Not sure about the Wrangler, but Toyota never offered any kind of touch screen bullshit in their FJ. Both are body-on-frame construction; Jeep is even more basic with solid front and rear axles.

If you're looking for CARS specifically...you basically need to go with cheap shitboxes to get "low tech". As in, buying a Mitsubishi Mirage - you'll get 70hp, roll up windows, shit radio, shit seats, cheap plastic everything, etc.

If you want something decent, in a car, I'm afraid it'll be full of the usual trinkets. A base model V6 Mustang with a manual tranny would probably be as close as you can get, but they won't be selling the V6's anymore. You'll be stuck with an expensive V8 GT or a cheaper piece of shit Ecotoot.

In short, you should buy something older if you want "low tech".

Depending on the millage you could always do a fuel injection service.

My MR2's 4AGE 20v has a surging idle. When I turn it on, the revs fly to 4000, float for a second, drop down to 1700 and then bounce rhythmically to 2300. The throttle feels kinda floaty and the engine holds revs longer than it should, almost like cruise control.

I knew the head gasket was blown. He tried telling me it was "because it sat for a while because I haven't been driving it much".

Yeah thats totally the reason. That piece of shit was barely worth the scrap metal it was made from at that point. He wanted $2500 for it when it had destroyed paint, high mileage, a bad engine, and rusted to shit.

Makes me really sad to see abused MR2s, especially knowing that they're only getting rarer the longer time goes on. By the time I can find one they'll be $10k for a decent example

does cooling your oil do anything beneficial? like is that a thing people do as an upgrade?

Only if the vehicle experiences high loads, like towing, going off road, or high RPMS. Just like the name says, it helps keep the oil from overheating.

Yes, an oil cooler is typically added to an engine that has had performance modifications done to it because such an engine will inevitably run hotter as it produces more power.

Guys I need to assemble a portable & apartment storable set of gear for Oil changes.

I've a heavy fucking 08 Dodge Avenger & a 08 Jeep Compass to work on.

I'm allowed to do it in my apartment parking lot.
I'm not some fucko who's going to do it on bare asphalt and get oil every goddamn where.

I'd like to be able to get the equipment necessary for under 100$

Any advice?

I'm also going to try extending out my oil changes to the extreme. The Jeep has over 140K miles on it itself.

ADVICE?

What would be the best/most practical way to get bit more power out of my 1993 NA MR2 with a 3S-GE engine?

Option A:
Buy and install the "missing" turbo parts and turbocharge the existing engine basically making it a 3S-GTE engine that the turbo MR2s come with.

Option B:
Buy a 3S-GTE engine and swap the existing engine to it. From my understanding if I were to find one with the E153 transmission mated to the engine this should also give my car LSD which it currently doesn't have.

Option C:
If I'm going to do an engine swap obviously I could put some other engine in there. What are some potential engines I should consider? Honda K20 / 24? Keep in mind that the regulations where I live state that you can only increase the size of engine by 25% so sadly I can only put a 2.5l engine in there which sadly leaves me without the option to put a 3.0l V6 in there which would be tempting as it could potentially give you the power of stock turbo MR2 with NA reliability.

Finally I'm not looking for absurd amount of power but I wish I could at least get around 250hp getting around 300hp would be perfect.

hay guise, 98 civic ex owner here... I haven't driven the car for about a month since I got a new company vehicle i can use for personal use..

Went to start it up today and at first the engine was pretty shaky but the tach only went up to 1500rpm which is pretty normal and then eventually settled down to the ~700 range.. but it got weird when I went into reverse. I dropped my handbrake and engaged the clutch and car went in reverse fine until I gave it some gas and it was almost like the wheel was locked onto the ground or as if my brakes never disengaged, I didn't have to force it too much but it eventually backed out of my spot. I switched into first and it went fine but when I turned there was an awful deep screetching noise but my power steering was definitely there... after awhile on the road all of the symptoms just disappeared, got home and did a quick drive around my apartment complex and everything checked out and no noises or squels or anything... It's been pretty wet and the brake discs get horribly rusty if not used much, but they're pretty fresh. I just did my brakes beginning of summer. Having car trouble. My daily, a 2003 Audi TT is misfiring constantly. I can barely get it to the end of my street now. They may be garbage but its not that difficult to plug in what car you have, and see what pops up as far as parts, unless you're just retarded or a sperglord.

Odds are its your Coils though, which you should have ordered online when It first started misfiring, becuase local auto parts stores are not going to be stocking those.

Well I am posting on 4chan anon.

Chances are it will be the coils which will make it difficult. I'm going to have to look for some online when I can.

But regardless putting in new plugs would be good as I doubt they were actually done when I took it in to get serviced.

does any of yous guys do basic car maintenance for friends & family?

i'm between jobs atm and trying to make a few extra bucks. i've had a few friends call me up lately to do some simple repairs (inner fender cover, new side view mirror, some interior bits, alternator) since they know i have a knack for this stuff. i've been making a little bit of cash this way so i was thinking of offering some basic things to my friends. brakes, oil changes, coolant system flushes, parts that are fairly simple to replace and don't require taking the whole car apart or that sort of thing.

thing is, im not sure how much to charge for things. idk how to determine a reasonable price for my services. does anyone w/experience doing this have any tips and stuff?

is this just a bad idea? i mean, i've been doing work on my own cars for about a decade now. i'm pretty proficient at it. and i mean, i'm not gonna attempt something that there's a good chance i could fuck up like a head gasket change or something.

i guess the first thing to do would to be to see what the average price for an oil change & brake pad change would be around here

My family decided to buy me a 2009 RAV4 the other day. I've never had a car before (I'm 19), but they decided I needed something for getting back and forth to college (airfare gets expensive). It's got the Limited trim, which means I have comfy heated seats for the Indiana winter. And, I have 4WD that can handle the snow.

This vehicle also has the 3.5 liter V6 engine, which (iirc) is the same engine used in the Sienna and the Avalon. I drove my mom's Sienna van a lot in high school that was of a similar vintage of this RAV4 (2010), but ostensibly, it's going to drive a lot differently in a heavier vehicle.

Here's my question: Why on earth did they decide to put the V6 in the later 2000s RAV4 models? If I even move my toe the wrong way, the whole car lurches forward. I feel like I'm driving a goddamn go-kart, and honestly, I kind of enjoy it. I just think that the engine and vehicle are mismatched. Anyway, there's my question, and there's my opinion.

Okay, so I managed to get a ride to the local auto store. Bought 4 Spark plugs that were $15 each. But they didn't have any coils, they said they could get them in but they would cost $150 EACH.
I managed to replace 2 of the spark plugs but wasn't able to do the other two due to lacking tools and the 3rd coil being stuck. I'd have ripped it out with tools but since I don't have a replacement I didn't want to damage it.
I doubt adding 2 new plugs is going to help much at all. But hey at least I can say I did something with my day right?

Anyone know where I can find out what kind of coolant my car needs? didn't come with a book when I bought it.
Got a coolant leak and wanted to fix the leak then top it up.

Also in the mean time would it be okay to fill it with water? Like in an emergency if it I saw shit was getting really hot? (Which it hasn't, it's always been running at 90)

If you're in a RWD, drift only at extremely tight turns or calculated turns where your more likely to understeer due to the momentum.

is it better to buy the expensive engine oil, or buy the cheap one and change it twice as often?
>>
>>17661417
depends on how much of a jew you are
really you're better off with higher quality stuff
but go with what's in your budget
just don't mix high quality with low quality.
If you're going from high to low, low to high, or unknown to high/low do a full system flush.

I havr enough saved to buy an Evo. I want a 4,5 or 6.

But where i live we get snow in winter, and that snow can be a good 20-30cm deep.

I want to get some adjustable suspension that i can use in winter and summer (daily and track use and Nordburgerring)

Is there a suspension setup that offers this level of adjustability, or would it be better to just jkeep stock shocks and buy something higher for winter?

For different climates/seasons im assuming?
It probably won't harm the engine but not using the correct oil can lead to slightly faster wear. It's best to use what the engine was designed for.

Just bypass it, there should be a inlet and outlet hose coming from the engine bay either clamp them off or splice them together.

go to the hardware store, get a metal pipe you can connect the 2 heater core hoses with, get 2 hose clamps, solved. just bypass it. both hoses go to the firewall

How can I check for burning oil? Just stand by the exhaust pipes and have someone rev the shit out of the car?

Also, since I leak oil like crazy, is it OK to use this bottle of oil that's been sitting outside for a few months? It's been closed but I'm wondering if it's still safe to use.

As other anon mentioned making sure the brake caliper's don't rub is one thing but also have to consider the bolt pattern and sometimes hub diameter.

Ex. A 5 bolt rim usually has 5 lugs spaced 114.3 mm apart so usually the rim has stamped in the metal 5 x 114.3mm or for 4 bolt rims 4 x 110 mm. If you don't get a rim with correct spacing it won't fit

Recently did an oil change on my '03 mustang gt, went from mobil 1 5w20 to royal purple 5w20 but on cold starts I can hear my lifters ticking until the oil gets to them, and I don't remember it doing this before. Whats up?

>>17663183

>>17663202

Wondering what a tercel 4e-fte swap costs. The car is $500 (CL), engine+trans is $1200+s/h (ebay), what else is needed? Also is it a good idea for a project?
>>
>>17663285
>>17663290
You're both missing the point. If the oil is thickening that badly when it gets cold, and causing noticeable lifter ticking, then it's shit oil, regardless of what the internet says. You didn't have this problem with mobil1, so clearly it must be better than the royal purple because it was performing well in conditions that the purple didn't.
>>
>>17663093
I'd recommend some good tires, maybe not the Michelin Pilot Sports, but something nice and grippy for all season, upgrade to some nice coilovers and get some good brakes and rotors like hawk, stoptech or ebc.. Should cost near the same as a bolt on turbo kit, but would be a lot more fun to drive.
>>
>>17662936
If it's burning it through the valve stems or in the cylinder, half a quart in your oil change interval should be fine. If it's dripping out and onto an exhaust component, look for a trail of oil in the engine bay. If if you're burning a quart in 1000 miles, might be time for a rebuild. As long as you keep the oil topped off, like check every gas fill up, it'll keep on running.
>>
>>17663325
Random anon entering the conversation. I had an 05 expedition with the 5.4 and I ended up getting valve tick around 100k mi. I would guess it's a combination of worn out valve lifters and shitty oil. The RP isn't as good as the mobil1, but even with the mobil1, his lifters are wearing out. It only hides the problem which is only visible with shitty oil. Really you should be able to put in any brand of oil with the manufacturers recommended weight and you shouldn't have any valve tick at all, regardless if it's some "amazing" mobil1 or "garbage" Napa brand oil.
