is this the right car for me? what else should I get?

2nd gen Ford Probe. Even the i4s are fun. And they have 4 seats. Plus, massive trunk. Me and my brother are both bassists, and we can haul all 3 of our basses and 5 people in the car. Not the most comfortable, but you get used to it.

I don't know nigga, it's fun af to drive but you're asking us if this is right for you and we have no idea about your life.

So we'll use my life and experiences. I owned an MR2 AW11 in highschool and that thing was fun af, especially when it rained. However, unless your a faggot with no friends 2 seats will not be enough. If you ever want to hang out you need two cars for your group because you're the fag with only 2 seats and not even a trunk for a third small person.

The AW11 is a bitch to work on just because it's so fucking small, it's like a fucking toy I'm not kidding. Parts aren't that easy to find at a junk yard and it's an old fucking car so price of upkeep is up there. There's a reason these are called money pits. Read the sticky fag.

E36 318ti.

Super fun suspension design, comfy, reliable once the cooling system is refreshed, hatchback will almost fit 2 sets of wheels with the seats down

It's like a comfy E30

see, you kid, but I would actually consider something like this. My only specification was that it had to be *fun*- be interesting, not just a way to get from point a to point b. Admittedly I was a little dismissive of >>17641665
>>
>>17641695
The E36 sedan/ coupe are pretty different to the hatch. Just do the full cooling system and you're golden.

Why do you want rear engine specifically? You should base your car buying around things like fun or handling dynamics not where the engine is located.
>>
>>17641836
The only non-mom car I've ever driven was rear engine, and I know how to too-gay in a rear engine. I'm not so sure if the techniques would be so different, but I think I should go for something that feels natural to drive.
>>
>>17641828
Wait so you want something interesting? Not necessarily fun? Because they are very different things.

Just remember anything 'interesting' will be expensive and hard to maintain.
>>
>>17641861
Sounds like you've got no idea what you are talking about desu.

Engine position definitely plays a part in how a car handles but it's setup and suspension design play a bigger part. Well designed front engined cars are renowned for being predictable on the limit which is exactly what you want in your first fun car
>>
>>17641862
hmm, I suppose interesting would be inherently fun to me. My dad owns a mini cooper LS- its slow as fuck, tiny, no air conditioning, if you turn too tight the wheels scrape the wheel well and the engine is the most unreliable piece of british engineering in the world- but god damn, is it fun.

>>17641866
hmm, youre maybe right to be honest. Ive never driven at any kind of speed in a front engine car, its probably the same. I suppose I just hear people talk a lot about there being an astronomical difference.
>>
>>17641873
I'm not saying it has to be fast to be fun but a Kombi van is interesting, not a whole lot of fun to drive.

You need to do some more research and drive more cars. If rear engine or mid engine was that much better than Toyota would have made the GT86 mid engined, BMW would have made all they're M cars mid engined, etc etc. Other factors have a bigger difference
>>
>>17641885

if you want fast, there is always this:
>Porsche has created a version called B32 in a limited edition. The van, based on the luxurious Carat model, was equipped with the 231 PS (170 kW) 3.2 liter Carrera engine and was originally developed to support Porsche's testing activities in Algeria. Ten of these were built, with some sold by Porsche to special customers. Porsche themselves also used the Porsche-engined bus to transport staff rapidly.[3] Top speed was around 135 mph (217 km/h), although Porsche only claimed 116 mph (187 km/h) to ensure that the numbers could be replicated with nine people in the car and with the air conditioning on full.[3]

>>
>>17642032
Fuck off old man. i don't race everywhere like a retard. This kid you're suggesting a car to has even said he's been on a too gay. now get off you're high horse and understand that OP was asking about an aw11. I can therefore assume that when he said fun he meant involving to drive hard and good handling.

No doubt I've always wanted a kombi ute, I think they are cool as fuck. But would I buy it because it is fun? fuck no.

>>17642056
you sound super angry for some reason
>>
>>17642056
well yes you are mostly correct because I think that having a car that can t o o g a y will keep me interested in it.
HOWEVER, I don't mean to exclude cars that dont necessarily go fast- as long as it's interesting and will make me want to continue to drive for enjoyment I'll drive it. Though that does mean that typically yes the car needs to be fun and that typically means a car needs to be fast/have good handling.

OP, you will be fine. The trunk in an AW11 is bigger than it seems. Fits golf clubs just fine. You can fit a bass in there. If you empty out the frunk (no spare) you can fit an medium sized amp in there (I've done it). And two seats is all you need. It gives you the perfect excuse not to ferry people around.

AW11s are substantially more practical than Miatas. I own both and I can tell you that the AW11 has more interior space and doesn't feel cramped, and WAY more trunk/storage space. My AW11 has also never left me stranded. Even the time it blew a headgasket it drove me home with two of its cylinders.

really? it seems kinda big in pic related but I suppose it's just deceptive. problem is though is that I have to fit a bass amp as well, which I'm positive Id stuggle with in the AW11 just a little at least.
>>
>>17642258
Probably not because the AW11 has two trunks.

Also if you have a spare in the Miata you eliminate all your trunk space. If you have a spare in an AW11 it only takes away frunk space, not trunk space

I am both of those posts, and I've owned two AW11s, and done just about everything on my current one.
I am from Pennsylvania but I go to the University of Alabama and I survived all year with my AW11. The girlfriend adored it. Regularly drove it for an hour and a half straight on the weekends to go into Birmingham.

The only time I ever wished I had more room, was when I was moving stuff out of my apartment and into my storage unit that was 15 min away. It took 4 trips in the AW11 and would have taken 1 in a SUV or two in a midsize sedan.

I would ask why are you going out of your way to accommodate other people?

If you are running the show and have something monetary to gain from it then you could justify the band's transport but some earnings have to go back into the transport to cover that service.

Even if everyone agrees to chip in most of the cost is still going to be on you and it is not unlikely someone will find many excuses to consecutively not add to pot.

I had an octavia wagon when I was a guitarist in a band and we could have carried nearly everything but I was an "asshole" and insisted we hired another friends van on those nights. My car was for my shit and when we split the costs evenly it was significantly less than me driving since our friend gave us a preferential rate but enough that it was still worth his time, so he worked along with us and provided an actual service. And most importantly it was fair.

I painted the car, because when I got her she was a total rust bucket. I did a lot of body work. The fenders were rusted out so I don't feel bad about the flares. This is a picture after the paint had cured before someone trim went back on like parking lights.
The roof in my previous picture was plastidipped black for shits and giggles to see if I liked the look. I think the black top half looks great now.
When I finish college I'll be able to finish all the body work fiberglass the flares into the body and then get her a real paintjob.

I'm considering buying one too. I got a thing for the first gen, although I want it as a car I use solely for meets, and hopefully a car to add some mods to(exhaust for one).
How easy is it to work with these cars? What's the maintenance like? The cost for upkeep?
>>
>>17643145
Good luck m8

>>17643313
There are two things that make these cars difficult to work on.
1. Midengine
2. Rusty/seized bolts

If you have long and skinny arms, or you have a decent lift, the midengine won't be much of a problem at all. I know it isn't that big of an issue for me.
The bigger issue is the same thing you'll have with any other 30yo car. Shit gets Rusty and bolts like to seize and break off. With a small engine bay like the AW11 it's almost impossible to drill a broken bolt out. So buy lots of PB Blaster, and don't use an impact gun. Use a breaker bar because you can feel if and when a bolt is going to loosen or break.

Otherwise repairs are very cheap, parts are plentiful because the 4age is a common engine and there were a decent number of AW11s sold.

Cost of upkeep just depends on the condition of your specific car. 30yo parts tend to break once and a while. The powertrain is fantastic and almost bulletproof. Stuff goes like the alternator and igniter and shit like that. But it's easy and quick to fix.
The engine is hillariously simple so there isn't a lot that can go wrong. Stuff is easy to diagnose. I mean how many CEL codes does an OBD11 car have? The AW11 has 10 CEL codes total.
Mine was expensive initially and since then has been dirt cheap. And by expensive initially I mean about $1000 in parts and a ton of my time. But I bought two shit heaps and used the one for parts for the other. Worked out great.
>>
>>17643450
Thanks, if this threads still alive I'll post a picture.

I'd just add that the mid engine difficulties on repairs, to me, are less intimidating than newer cars. The simple fact that I can see sunlight or my garage floor through the engine bay is heaven compared to most cars around these days.

Alternator likes to die because the hood dumps water on it
>>
Looking to buy an MR2, there's a great deal that's quite a few states away from me. Does anyone have advice on getting a car shipped/moved for me? I could obviously fly there and drive it back but this would help me work around my business/school.
