how dependable are Subaru 4 cylinder boxster engine?
Very if you maintain the gaskets
>poor fags will put it down because you have to spend $1000 after 150k miles

>maintain the gasket
what, just don't overheat it? Keep up on maintenance schedules?

Pretty much. Also if you're going to mod it to make more power, do it professionally. Subarus don't react well to dindu mods.

Mine is at 338k km and it is being ran with a botched LPG conversion. So I would say pretty reliable.

they're not very reliable. Mine blew up at 120k and I made sure with every piece of my being that I took care of that car like it was my spoiled kid.
Had nothing but problems after 100k.
Never buying a Subaru again.
>head gaskets
>Ringlands
>Dudebros fucking the drivetrain after dumping the clutch @ 6k two step launch control from thier cobb v3 access port
Ya na.
What I'll never understand is people will buy them for >muh AWD>muh handling >muh daily rally car, then proceed to lower them on thier nuts and tune them for highway pulls

not at all.

On my third engine.
First one, the 2.5, started knocking and I didn't abuse it. Died around 106k.
The 2.0EJ I ordered on eBay started knocking after three or four months. I abused it. Was also informed I should've primed the oil pump before running it as they sit in a warehouse for who knows how long. It was pinging like crazy when I filled up for the first time. Dumped in octane booster and about a week later it started knocking.
Currently daily driving another 2.0EJ, but I treat it like the original 2.5. Hardly enter boost as I don't want to drop another $900 for another EJ.
Thankfully they're rather easy to work on.
Everything is expensive for the Subaru. Everything.
>$220+ for OEM CV Shafts
>$550 for OEM timing components

First you said your EJ20 started knocking after 3 or 4 months, then a few sentences after, said it started knocking a week after the first time you filled it up? which one is it?

Proven technology its a 50 year old engine and doesn't make too much power with a turbo.

ej22 is the reliability god
at 220k miles right now on a '99 impreza
