They do use a contour platform but it doesn't stop people from calling it a Taurus. It's unfortunately automatic and the gearbox just doesn't really hold gears long enough. Handling is alright feels a little front heavy but by far isn't the worst handling car I've driven. It has actually been insanely reliable aside from the cooling system and a vacuum leak with the tuning valves.

Yes, they are as unreliable as people say. The only PT worth getting(and I say this VERY loosely) is the GT, because it was built by SRT, and not in the Chrysler plants. The GT, in conjunction with having more power and the ability to be a slight sleeper, is of much higher build quality in both the drivetrain and suspension.

If you see a base model PT, stay far, far away. If you see a GT, and it's at a reasonable price(>5,000), then consider it.

i want to retain power steering and air con, and while doable its a pain in the ass with the big block cars. if i were building it as a weekend toy i would probably go f2b with a 4.7 type r tranny and gut the thing. its just a fun cheap street car

Wal-Mart and any shitty craft store will sell patterned duct tape (usually Duck Tape brand). Just be sure it wraps around the fender under the plastic liner. Rinse, repeat for as many body panels as you can. I used a razor blade to cut and the back of the blade to stuff the tape into the smaller cracks between panels.
