Why are BMW cars losing their edge and getting fatter? I love the classic e39 and e46 M series and I'm thinking of buying a used M5 F10 next year but the money I would have to spend to make it performance drive worthy is insane. The F10 comes in at 4400 lbs give or take and to drop 300 lbs would easily consume $20,000. The M3 e92 is a great option for a pure sporty coupe but it's fascia is less masculine and overall it doesn't have the same visual gravitas of the M5 F10.
Pic related. How is the M4 GTS over 3500 lbs and why is it the size of an M5 e39?!
Because the people who can afford M cars are either old or chinese

Pic related.
Likely because government safety regs.
Also because twats whine that their car should be a touring car, but also Bently style cruiser luxoboat for the amount of money they spend on M.
People think manufacturers should be able to build a car to blitz the nurburhur in 5 minutes, but also absorb the 2 foot deep potholes like an 80's caddy riding over a skittle on their 25 minute commute to work.

How the hell are the wheelbase and width the same? It's a coupe vs a sedan.

E39's whilst heavy (3900-4k lbs) are diminutive compared to what's considered midsize now.
bmws were never meant to be mercedes the problem now is that they only have mini as a lesser brand and theyre niche vehicles not cars for everyone. bmw needs a volkswagen equivalent brand to sell cars people want because bmw as a brand has moved too upmarket and made it out of reach for many car buyers
they shouldve never bought rolls royce and instead buy a car brand like saab

1 series and 2 series replace the 3 series. 3 series replaced 5 series. Everything else is pig fat.
Everything went downhill after the X5 came out.

Not just BMW. Other manufacturers have to do it because of the goverment safety regs.
Look at civic gen 1st and current civic.

>safety regulations
>customer demands in terms of equipment
>customer demands in terms of styling
This is a retarded question and you must have known the answer to it
>the money I would have to spend to turn a german super-saloon into an older generation sports coupe is a lot
Gee who the fuck woulda thunk that would be the case
>but why doesn't BMW just build an M3 with that is literally just an engine and a chassis
Because there's as near as makes no difference no demand for a car like that. The customers who are the exception that confirm this rule are either
a) poorfags like the people who usually advocate for these cars on 4chan and could never afford one anyway
b) rich people who would rather buy an air-cooled 911 with a leather interior, fantastic driving dynamics and a great badge that would still be lighter and nicer to drive than a brand new stripped-out BMW or
c) people who have some money but would rather build this car themselves and consequently buy an Ultima GTR or a Ginetta or one of the other myriad of kit cars designed to fill this exact niche in the market and wrench on it themselves in their garage because the car isn't realistically a daily driver, be it a stripped out BMW or a kit car, and they treat it as such.

What do you mean by this?
The F10 has 575 hp, it does 0-60 in 4.something seconds.
What is a "performance drive worthy" relatively luxurious saloon car to you?

its not just bmw, its all cars. they get ever so slightly larger and heavier and more expensive every year. then they introduce new lower-tier model lines to fill the gap. an m3 of yesteryear is an m2 now. then itll be an m1. then an m0.5. etc. same thing with audis s4. an s3 is about the size of a b5 s4. your m5 is like a 7 series of a decade ago. think of it that way and youll sleep better at night.

yes. chinese are very tall people compared to others. almost all of them obese too. so they need bigger car.
