I'll start
https://medford.craigslist.org/cto/d/red-subaru-svx-sports-model/6229825914.html
Would it be stupid to buy this?
I've always thought these were cool and I'm tempted
I have heard that they don't share very many parts with other Subarus which means it might be considerably more expensive to service than my current car do to it's rarity
I'm also a poorfag
I have enough cash to buy this but just
I would probably want to manual swap it at some point when I have the money
Talk me into/out of buying this

had one back in 2010.
I paid $1900 for mine with 127k no issues

Great car, very ahead of its time.
Super comfy, good ride, well optioned.

Bad: Pigfat, though the 230hp h6 has enough to still let it get out of its own way.
Shit gas mileage though. Have to run 91. I got about 15-18mpg in the city. highway was okay at 23-25.
Some hard to source parts. Motor isn't bad itself since it was shared between outback and such. Anything SVX specific can be hard to source.
Transmissions are glass. They are basically impreza/legacy transmissions that aren't designed for the weight of the SVX. A recently rebuilt one will likely be okay for awhile but I'd still expect to budget a rebuilt trans every 50-70k.

That all said - the cars are actually reliable if you maintain them. Not much is really a common issue besides the weak transmissions. There are worse "rare" cars to buy out there.

Do it. There is a niche of people who go after rare 90's Japanese coupes and they aren't getting easier to find. I have two Ford Probes, a GT V6 and a 4-cyl, so I will give you a preview of what you're in for with cars like these of this vintage.

Pretty much what >>17625233 said. They were all automatic because at the time Scoobaru didn't have a manual trans to handle the power of the flat-six. You can swap them from what I have heard and I believe some of the later STI transmission components are bolt ons, I could be wrong. I have seen them swapped to manual and I have seen them STI swapped too.

Find out what platforms it shares parts with, it will make your experience a lot easier. Probe shares parts with 5 different Mazdas and even some stuff from the SN95 Mustang, but as mentioned anything specific is going to be eBay. The Probe was kind of an orphan platform so not many people messed with them, but your SVX shares parts with the Impreza and that means mega-fuck-tons of aftermarket and parts. Plan on ordering any major maintenance stuff, like timing belt or water pump, most parts houses no longer keep stuff like that in stock, especially for something as obscure as the SVX.

They were a cool car back then, and still are, I'd buy one if I were to jump into a 90's Subaru platform.

As with any car of this vintage, check for rust inside and out, especially near the battery compartment, check door seals, check the trunk seal, and look for oil leaks. And post bread on hood when you get it.

>>
>>17625340

Well if I were you, I would save my pennies and save my dimes, as the Beach Boys said, cars of this vintage are not to be half-assed, I learned my lesson with my first Probe, RIP.

If anything, put your money together, buy the car and learn how to work on them. You'll save a lot of money that way, and you'll learn a trade, and these cars are a cinch to work on compared to today's nanny-mobiles.

2 grand for an SVX that apparently has been dealer-maintained, and in that condition, I'd be all over it if I was in the market for one. Plus, with it being a California car, rust is probably a minimum. Jump on it.
>>
Not any specific find, but I'm looking for a decently reliable cheapo-box to learn stick with, ideally under $3k.
Should I just get something like a 90s civic coupe or would something more fun and rwd like a 240sx or 90s mustang still be reasonable at that price range?

Break something and fix it on the weekend so you can drive it to work, at least that's what I had to do.

You'll need a decent metric wrench set, socket wrench set, torque bar, jackstands and a floor jack. Better tools make fixing cars a lot easier.

Definitely interested in a 944 with better horsepower, but it's already a gamble as to whether or not it'll be a moneypit, being a project car is definitely fishy. I'm gonna go try and meet the owner in the next few weeks, will definitely get a prepurchase inspection, anything I should ask, look out for, or be suspicious of?

The transmissions aren't glass, they have a cooling issue because of an internal screen that obstructs fluid flow over time. Remove the screen, replace the fluid every 30k or so, and it will last a long time.

No. There is a mesh screen in the early ones which clogs over time. Two other things you can do is fit an external trans cooler and use a good synthetic fluid.

>>17629523
it's 1.6 memeboost powering a full blown heavy sedan.
just get an older beemer
it will be cheaper, more fun and you will most likely find cheap parts and mechanics fixing for cheap if anything goes wrong
>>
>>17625327
Ok so, question from a noob with almost no car sense.

What would likely be wrong with it? I've been looking at several makes of cars and whenever I find one generally cheaper than all the rest, but looks fine to the eye, I know it falls under the category of "too good to be true."

So say I still wanted to go along with it. Is there something commonly wrong that people don't want to fix themselves that isn't catastrophic? I'm looking to get a car and do the work myself for the most part.
>>
>>17629550
say i get an e46 or e90 theyre still almost the same weight ~1500 kg and still the same hp ~160 or so since theyre all 320d versions here
is it really that different
>>
>>17629596
beemers are rwd so you'll enjoy it more by default they have more power. One thing mondeo will have is fuel economy and maybe interior, since it's a new-ish car. I am personally looking to buy e46 for myself, so i might be biased
>>
>>17628505
You didn't read it. In my area cars are exempt from testing if they are 20 years old
>>
>>17629632
yeah thats why i chose the mondeo cause its got a pretty nice interior and looks nice also its newer so it wont be hard finding parts
i was leaning towards 2006 e90 320d but was told they have gimmicky problems and since its bmw its gonna cost more to fix if it does break

My dude that is a high mileage salvage title m6, it has had the living shit driven out of it, trashed and left at some mechanic. I posted it because the whole "salvage title due to very minor scratches" is complete bs.

Also amg package? There is no such thing, the mechanic selling it is just so retarded he put down whatevet he could to attract people.

You don't want to touch something like that unless you're very experienced. Double vanos, head gasket leaks, smg problems, suspension is probably not in good shape either. That is my favorite car but no way in hell would I consider something like that. Just think of the amount of money you'll spend on repairs vs the cost of a non-fucked one.

Shit sucks so much. I was 18 and in a rush, did 60 in a 40 zone. Over $200 for the ticket, another $50 for the traffic school so no points on my license. Learned my lesson, but My mom never lets me live it down. Then, a few months ago, someone rear ended me during rush hour traffic. Still fighting with my insurance over it, since They can't seem to find the guy at all. Lesson learned there: Trust no one, not even yourself.

Also, pic is from a Craigslist ad from months ago of an XT I wanted, but sold. I'm in love with this car.

Went and looked at it today. It's not worth 500 dollars, much less the 2500 he's asking for it.

>lots of clear cost damage
>lots of rust (I know that's to be expected in mr2s)
>leaky frunk
>smoked like a train when it started
>doesn't idle smoothly, revs constantly fluctuating up to 2500 then back to 1000 when stopped
>shakes like crazy on the road, don't know what speed because speedometer didn't work

My dreams have been crushed, but I knew I wasn't going to get a perfect car for 2500. He offered to drop it to 2000 but even that's way too much

I'm very excited. It's a final year SHP with 25K miles and the rare sport seats being sold by the original owner. I've loved starquests since I was a kid, and learned to drive stick on my dad's when I was 12.

He bought it as a project for us to work on, and for me to daily when I turned 16. Although it ran great, it was primered and sitting in the driveway most of the time since I was young, and my mom had us sell it after a few years. I understand why she did, but I learned so much from that car.

I love these, and they are generally reliable, but be aware that little things will go wrong ALL THE TIME. Powertrain is pretty good but most of them run rough due to neglect and it will cost you to keep them in the shape that the engineers designed them to run in.

I mostly see nice ones owned by old men who did well in the 80s and actually continued to maintain the cars they bought new. Most secondhand owners just run them into the ground - so don't be one of those guys.

The engines are pretty bulletproof honestly.

The only expensive bits are the ignition, throttle bodies (has 2 and they commonly eat shit, 700$ ea) and the SMG transmission.

Also the rod bearings. It's just a matter of taking the oil to get tested to see if they find residue. Applies to the e90 m3 too.

Almost guarantee homie thrashed it. Go check it out, if the seller is Russian then walk away quick. But remember, the owner neglected to fix a headlight when a new pair is like 90 bucks, didn't take care of keeping the scoop attached properly, and focused on aesthetics over keeping it together. I'm in the process of fixing all the bullshit and neglect previous owners did to a turbo Subaru and it's not fun my man. Mileage isn't a big issue, my Outback XT was bought at 175k with no shaft play or tranny issues.
