Neither of those are true. The MR2 weighed around the same in most trim levels, and the engine likely made a smidge more power because it used electric fans rather than a clutch driven one. I don't need to mention that the AW11 also received a supercharged version in later models.

I know, it's crazy but a stock NA AW11 can easily get away from a 1.6l Miata, and it can keep up no problem with the 1.8l. Especially on curvy back roads. The MR2 shouldn't handle better or be faster, but it is.
