What does/o/ think about the idea of buying a nice Peepee Pornis?
Am 18, i live in an upper-middle class family and of course i never had the chance to even touch an older car because mommy thought it would kill me. (I did drive a Citroen AX 94', loved it and a 97 civic sedan, driving it felt mediocre at best)
I currently drive an F21 BMW 1-series diesel 116d (bought by daddy), and despite being a dream to drive, it doesn't even come close to capturing an amazing driving experience (since it wasn't even really made for that).
Anyways, i want to buy a classic mini as a hobby car, and if something breaks, i'll at least be forced to learn how the car works te hard way.
TL;DR:
Is buying a classic mini a good idea?
What are the dangers of owning it, which model year is best?
Any owners here?

I say buy something similar from the same decade that isn't an overpriced meme. Own it for a few years and figure out if you even want to own a classic car to begin with. If you're only 18 it's probably not like you imagine it is.
Then get the mini in your twenties if you still want it.

Buy a Peugeot 205 gti instead, just as easy to fix as a mini, and you won't look ridiculous in it.

what I can tell you about it
aside from it being slow @ 130kph max and noisy
>rust
all along the roof sills especially the corners
door sills
door skins along the bottom and back of the door
wheel arch inner skin
most of the battery box
where the rear subframe mounts to the body
>mechanical problems
the sump gearbox and all is low to the ground and just the right hight to be cracked by a curb
this can also bend the front sub frame even at low speeds
gearbox has two counter shafts (they flipped the engine around to put the carburettor at the back and thus avoid iceing)
but this puts much of the electrics in front of the engine and more exposed to water
clutch sometimes gets a bit of sump oil on it
older bmc a series only have three main bearings A+ has five
they were made for a long time
but to save money I would say buy the 1980s to 1990s ones
they have the larger 1300 cc engine and many of the older problems are ironed out
and they also have more modern seats and dashboard
the 1960s and 1970s cars can cost allot and may have many odd parts
and they are either pristine restorations or absolute junk
>thought it would kill me
if you survived a Citroen AX your already priddy lucky
here is a mini that met some trouble
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yqnL06_0IU
going around a right hand corner the back stepped out and rotated 180 degrees
then went backwards into a tree stump
ripping the back left swing arm off while flipping the car over backward 180 degrees
it bounced off the front right of the roof
then rolling sideways back onto its wheels
with the engine still running and slowly trying to drive off a cliff
drivers side seat broke and folded flat onto the floor
fuel tank got crushed
had any one been in the front left seat their head would be crushed (video is after some sick mawds including a coke bottle fuel tank to prime the fuel bowl

OP here
I see you did your best at informing me about the car. Thank you very much. My
Idea was to get one from germany made in the 80's-90's.
I'm a pleb from Slovenia. We don't have many here. I'm gonna go take a look at a restored 1977 model in red on monday, just to see how the cars look irl and ask the guy how it was to own. imo owning an older model seemed way too risky for me. Also, you're right. This restored model that i'm supposed to see costs 6k, while 80's,90's models on Mobile.de cost 2k-4k and look much more solid, some even have steering wheel airbags.

>I see you did your best at informing me about the car
an attempt was made
they are pritty cool cars
much more roomy inside than it appears from the outside
with plenty of space for things like the size of 6x9 speakers in the door pokets and under the seats
and a large space in the boot that can take a second fuel tank or a Pioneer TS-W307D4
but the rubber suspesion is a bit bouncy
so if you are taller than 5'7" a bump in the road might get your head close to the roof
esp with the rear seats
to make the suspesion more plyable
and in tune with how ever the weight is in the car
the cheep way is something like a HiLo kit that works with the exsisting springs
http://www.i-firme.fr/Austin-Rover-Mini-Front-Hilo-Kit-Suspension
minis only bad handleing is a propencity to violently overseer because of short wheel bace
>I'm gonna go take a look at a restored 1977 model
hope it goes well
>imo owning an older model seemed way too risky for me
its not so bad given the aftermarket
only getting super expensive if you have to do alot of panel work
>while 80's,90's models on Mobile.de cost 2k-4k and look much more solid, some even have steering wheel airbags.
and even the gauges in front of the driver lol
the older interior does feel more roomy tho
and has a large parcel tray
this is the oldest type
big difference is the non remote gear shift
nicknamed the pudding stirrer for its vageness
dash pod is missing some gauges
windows fold in half rather than winding down
door catch is attached to a string
the heater was optonal but many cars do have one
it is plumbed to the cars cooling system and can leak water into the car though its two pipes
but this is rare

While that seems really neat, it does make me nervous since it lacks a lot of basic gauges and is definetly too barebones for my tastes.
I bet the collectors love it tho.
>>17623334
Just noticed the thing about the gauges, thanks for notifying me. Being classic with the center gauges is sweet and all, but i prefer the modern driver oriented dash.
Also, i'm 5.74, so i probably won't have any issues.
What's with the fenders tho? I see some have wide fenders with rims similar to the AE86's rims, while other minis are much skinnier with no fender extensions and small wheels. Are the wide fenders usually a custom job? Were they originally only meant for the John Cooper Worksversion?
>>17623427
Pic related
>>17623405
owners install extra gauges under the front parcel tray or along near the windscreen vent
>definetly too barebones
yea its pretty spooky
but very calming compared to modern cars
>>17623427
>Just noticed the thing about the gauges
its the water temperature and oil pressure
and the pod can fit more gauges
>What's with the fenders tho?
mostly bolt on and they can rub if their is more than two people in the car
a little bit of cut into the wings can give more room and is often done
>rims similar to the AE86's rims,
minilite wheels
with the old kind being 10x5 inches
>>17623438
they are most likely 12x6
>other minis are much skinnier with no fender extensions and small wheels.
10 inch steel wheels with the oldest being only 4.5 inch wide
>>17622936
in this pic are the latter cooper S steel wheels
5 inch wide iirc
>Are the wide fenders usually a custom job?
a good deal of the time yes
