My buddy had a couple back in my high school days. They are one of the reasons why I'll never drive a Nissan. Good luck finding one that's not a pile of rust or immigrant owned.

What was so bad about them? I've read that it's rather underpowered and rusts toward the back end but a manual should fix that problem and I'll only buy from a rust free state. I'm willing to put in work for this.

It's completely do able. They're honestly not that great in any way or exceptionally reliable. But better than an explorer or rodeo. It would be kinda cool with a manual, but don't expect it to be a landcruiser.

First vehicle was a 92 pathfinder.

Frame rust ended my time with it which was a bummer. I loved it.

Isuzu trooper is also another option. That being said I'd opt for an XJ cherokee, meme drivetrain and parts are almost free.
