it will be the same story like with japanese and later korean cars.
first they're unreliable cheap copies of known brands and later they become better and better and at some point are just as good or even overtake in some regards.

also, what difference does it make anymore when you consider that a HUGE part of every car nowadays gets its parts from china?

They'll price them low and they'll be steaming piles of slapped together crap. And then either they'll do what the Koreans did and get their act together or they'll slink away like the Yugo did.

not for a few decades. korean cars are barely meeting the reliability standard now, they just throw a large warranty at it to say "if it breaks we'll fix it". even then, they just feel cheap in certain regards. I get Kia/Hyundai as rental car, the horn sounds like a toy, the interior plastics are cheap as hell...

once the reliability ups, if they are substantially cheaper they can definitely eke out a position in the american market.

First Jap car came out in 1904, it took them more than half a century to archive today's reputation. On the other hand, Korea only started to produce their cars (without Mitsubishi) in the late 2000s, but they caught up with the Japs in less than a decade. Now it's China's turn, they'll overtake all of us in the next decade.

I do kitchens for a living.
Most of my Chinese clients are like "Yes I want this, this and that, can you recommend a sink/countertop/whatever? Oh.. but I DONT WANT ANY CHINESE SHIT"
Even Chinese people don't want Chinese shit.

The only people who will buy Chinese cars are people who just want A to B and the cheapest thing they can buy.

Why DIDN'T the TATA nano do well? Its because its the cheapest car in the world and even poor Indians were like "we don't want everyone to think we are poor, so we don't want a nano"
