Fuck off.
it's a cool car but it's almost 30 years old, no matter how clean or well kept it is it will have problems

is it worth modding one? things like exhaust or cams? bushings? or are they easily ruined

Into the trash it goes.

but im not looking for a sports car. sure i would prefer a manual but its not like E24 are common and i have a lot to choose from.

Lovely car, but good luck trying to source parts for it.
Get an e36 instead

Find a manual one. They're around and better in every way. A manual drives the same as when it was new. The automatic is a shitty 3 speed with 80s tech.
Dude if it's cheap enough grab it. Manual trannies are everywhere and the engine is bulletproof. Be ready for the speedo and odo to die on you but who cares. They are awesome. Make sure you get one with an LSD or look up where to get one. Parts aren't cheap but I love mine

M30's with stock bottom ends can do 400+ Boosted. Sport Spring/shock set ups have been available for years, and I think a few companies are starting to supply coil-overs for them as well.

Their power trains are shared with 5 series and 7 series of the same era, and there companies that are refurbishing the electronics too.
Now E9's and 2002's are little harder to source parts for.
