Should I install a roll cage in my car for safety?

Unless you need to get through scrutineering at an actual event, no.

People with aftermarket roll cages are honestly totally pathetic. 90% of them wouldn't pass on an event or make any difference in an accident, they weigh the car down like crazy and ruin your back seats. Your cars internal roll cage is already more than sufficient for anything you'll be doing on the roads (yes that includes driving like a 16 year old and endangering the lives of others whilst not actually going that fast).

Not OP, but I drive a Ford Escort Mk1.

Naturally anything from this era is a deathtrap.
I don't even have a collapse able steering column, as any head on will displace my ribcage with my dish steering wheel.

I am trying to make it safer before I go to get the new engine certified by an engineer. (2.0L Zetec with a T9 Gearbox and twin 45DCOE).

I may have to replace my rear drum brakes with discs, and there are few options for discs that fit under 205/50/r13 s

I'm thinking of getting 15" wheels and getting some wilwoods. That might cost me around 3k, but the result would be worth it, but if I can avoid that immediate expense then I'll stick with the Drums.

Let's get back to roll cages, bump.

FUCKING DO IT
>>
>>17593406
I think the safest thing for you to do OP, is to log off the internet, and go hide innawoods where nobody can find you. Then you will be truly safe.
>>
Your head will split when it meets your role cage in a crash. You'd need a harness and helmet for a cage to work.
>>
Roll cages require money, engineering, harnesses, and a helmet.

seems like very cool stuff, send pics

neat project
how much racecar and how much road-usable is it?
>>
>>17593406
only if you're gonna wear a helmet all the time, cause your skull slamming into a metal tube is going to harm you way more than any average collision would.
>>
>>17593435
Uuuhhhh, most cars before the late 2000s are death traps in a rollover. That being said, a cage without a 5/6 point harness, a HANS device, a racing seat, and a helmet is also a deathtrap because you'll just crack your head on the tubing in a crash.

A stock Evo would have left both drivers dead from this.

I would but I'm out of town right now, and no recent images to show

It all started a while back in 2012 when I blew a headgasket, and found cracked pistons and rusted cylinders.

I'd only driven it back about 4 months before from my uncles where I drove down and stripped the previous owner's spray can paint job, and his experience as a former spray painter and panel beater helped make it look rather tidy.

What I should have done is put the new gasket on and driven it until it really died, was only a 1.3L, boasting an incredible 75bhp and 820kg (1800lb). (Not a Pinto).

Instead I decided I'd take it out and put a Zetec or Duratec in.

It sat for about 3 years.
I now have time and money to get it back on the road, and have nearly sold it a dozen times, before realising I'd probably regret never driving it again.

I have owned it since August 2007.
School, Uni, and Travel got in the way, but I reckon I'll get it done by christmas.

I promise I'll post a thread in the future after I get further along and show the progress.
Probably in a Classic Car Thread or Australian.

>implying I care if I die in a crash
live or die, my goal is to do more damage to their car than my own
>>
>>17593528
Why the engine swap? You can do some amazing things with the pinto engine in the early escorts. is it a 1.6?
>>
>>17593682
man i really should read threads before asking questions.

Then you want body armor and off-road bumpers, and a lift with big fat tires so your bumper will go thru their windshield or side impact at head level, aka a bro truck. While your daydreaming about this might as well imagine you drive a diesel set up to roll coal on pedestrians, bikes and lesser autos.

do not get a roll cage unless you also get the following

>DOT approved helmet
>racing seat
>racing harness with proper mount
>>
>>17593682
Only a 1.3L Kent.

I guess I also wanted some challenge and snowflake new-engine old-car.
I took it out and bought some parts years ago for the swap, and cbf trying to sell them and start from scratch with a pinto.

Also the cost-power ratio, as well as weight-power ratio is worth considering.
I reckon I can squeeze 170hp out if I'm lucky.

Also the closer to 200hp I get, the more likely everything else like the diff will not survive.

>>17593571
I didn't really answer your query.

Right now I'm going daily, but I want to get to slowly get to the point where the only thing not making it a racecar is the lack of a rollcage and proper seats and belts.

Originally I planned to put some r1-5vy throttle bodies in, but the associated complexity, wait, and cost are all things I can consider in a later build.

Also using the MegaJolt ECU.
