I'm looking to buy a used car, max of 14k hopefully less though. Sedan or a small SUV, looking for a reliable vehicle that's nice to be in and drive. But I have a bunch that I'm looking at hopefully I can get some quick opinions on what I should outright avoid and what I should look more into. Thanks in advance.
>2010 Buick Lacross CXL - 87k miles - $10k
>2009 Lincoln MKZ - 74k - $9.5k
>2011 BMW 328i xDrive - 92k - $13.25k
>2007 Lexus ES 350 - 56k - $12.3k
>2008 Acura MDX - 123k - $12k
>2010 Acura TL SH-AWD - 108k - $12.7k
>>
>>17591652
If you want reliable the first three need to be stricken from your list.

The last two are glorified hondas, while reliable, are really no better than nicely spec'd Honda Crv for the MDX, or Accord for the Tl.
>>
R32 GTR or a 2011 CTS-V Coupe for a DD?
>>
>>17591673
MDX is based on the Pilot, not the CR-V. ES of that gen is based on the Camry too.

DD a car designed in 89 or a car designed in this millennium? The Cadillac is way better for DD, old car ergonomics tend not to be very well thought out. Personally, I wouldn't bother with a LHD daily.

Find car on craigslist i want. They say their selling because they want to upgrade to an suv. Is this suspicious to you? Why wouldnt they just trade it in at carmax and get their suv? Why sell on craigslist? Maybe car has issues?
>>
>>17592493
The medium budget shit is what youll find at best buy, but their shit is overpriced. I would find what you want and look around onlin for cheaper prices.

Also the market for that stuff is waaay down. Theres people on craigslist selling cheap, good, and top end stuff for cheap because their local pawn shop offered them pennies. Dont forget to haggle.

I'm going to get some rwd manual so I can slip and slide (tm).

>>
>>17593091
Totally uneducated on this, but I reckon they expect to get a better price/tradein through craigslist than at Carmax. What are you looking at buying? If it's a smaller vehicle and/or the seller has a family, they could legitimately just want the extra space provided by suburb-mom memes.
Regardless, you should probably pay a /trusted/ mechanic to check the car out prior to buying.
>>
>>17593091
Why would that be suspicious? I went from a coupe to a regular sedan to an SUV. Sometimes you need more space especially if it's more than just you in it.

>>17593149
Ericthecarguy and our blessed savior Scotty Kilmer have some decent "this is the general idea of how to fix it", but most of the time you'll be reading forum posts, or terrible quality phone cam DYI fixes for your specific car. Start with your first problem, say replacing brakes and rotors. You'll need a socket set, wrenches, maybe a breaker bar and depending on the car, either a C clamp or one of those weird square socket things where you twist/push the piston back in (usually on euro cars). Collect tools are you perform jobs. That keeps your tool cost down and you'll learn how to "make due" with the tools you have if you don't want to buy that vehicle/manufacturer specific tool. but what >>17594227 mentioned, all those things are general maintenance that just come with the vehicle and over time. desu, replacing something like say an alternator is loosen a few bolts, undo the belt, take off, put new one on, put belt back on and tighten bolts. Don't over think it. Mustang, miata, mr2, 240sx would all be "decent" cars that you can drift on a budget.
>>
>>17596135
>not using a block of wood and your sheer strength to keep caliper pistons in check
protip: use something to clamp off the brake line
so when u force piston back in
gross bullshit doesn't get cycled into the lines
also helps slow piston creep when caliper is off
>>
>>17596183
I don't think it's a good idea to kink or pinch the rubber/braided steel part of the brake line. Similar to how you shouldn't 180 degree kink wires. If you're worried about water/burnt brake fluid going back up in the lines, you should bleed your calipers till you have fresh fluid. Whatever that got pushed up, will get pushed back down and replaced with fresh fluid. Also, if you're worried about piston creep from the weight of that little bit of brake fluid, you probably need to rebuild your calipers, they shouldn't slide that eaisly.

I'm having a problem with my brakes in my car. Whenever the car is not started I can build up pressure by pumping the pedal, but when I crank up the car, my pedal sinks in to the floor completely. Also, I can build up some pressure when it's idling, but it sinks into the floor almost immediately. I've checked my lines, drums, check valve, hoses, and I've bled the brakes. I see what looks like a bit of a leak on my brake booster, right under my master cylinder, but I'm not 100% sure. Any advice appreciated. Thank you.
>>
>>17600357
Only if it has no cracked/torn boots, all regular maintenance, timing belt, spark plugs, valve adjustment, water pump etc, and the interior is clean. Odds are some of that stuff hasn't been done and whatever you think it would cost to have done, I'd take off from 6k.

>>17600446
spray around your break booster with some carb cleaner or ether and see if the engine speed increases, it would show you have a vacuum leak almost immediately. Does your engine act like you have a vacuum leak? Shitty idle, poor performance, etc?

>see yaris in mirror. he's not stopping so i slam it. yaris enters opposite lane but still crashes into me. says to the police that he didn't take the opposite lane because of oncoming car.
seems like he steered into my rear left wheel because his wheel turned black. probably from rubber and not paint transfer because i couldn't see anything but minor scratches on the side of my plastic bumper

the starter gives off a single click when trying to turn over. even when we jump started it.
could the automatic transmission have been damaged from a hit to the drivetrain while at max rpm in first gear and would it result in the engine not turning over?
or could my differential be fucked after that? there's and abs sensor in the rear btw and he kept flashing ESP-BAS (electronic stability control)

I hadn't thought of that before, I've sprayed the hoses, and everything, but never the brake booster. I'll give it a go. Yeah, I've had idle problems with the car for awhile now, but I've never really been able to find the source. However, I don't think they're related. My brakes were working way before my idle problems. Thanks for the feedback. I'll see what happens.

>Now when I try to start it, it wont engage the flywheel but still spins, Safe to say its the Solenoid?

If the starter spins the solenoid is doing its job making contact (or the starter couldn't spin) but when it stuck the contacts were probably burnt and causing the sticking. Now the starter spinning without turning the engine over suggests the Bendix is fucked allowing the starter motor to spin without turning the flywheel.

I'd replace the starter and solenoid as an assembly. Good time for a fresh positive cable and inspect or replace the engine ground too.

Much love for old Fords. I've had several and worked on many more.

If your Coolant system is over pressurized enough to where its pushing it back out (I assume the cold fill) theres something seriously wrong, as in you have a leak or worse (head gasket) somewhere in the system enough to where its boiling.

Need to get it check out a few many times and youll be replacing the engine.

>Also I tried to put the heat on full blast and it just blew cold, why is that?

You didn't bleed it properly, there was enough air trapped in the system as to keep the coolant from circulating through the heater core.

Newer cars have sensors, and or impact sensitive equipment that will interlock and keep the starter from starting the car back up.

I know specfically In the case of BMW E9x's they actually have an explosive bolt atop the battery that will D/C the biggest positive line to the battery, in the event of an accident to keep from starting a fire.

Its a Toyota from the Toyota War.

I'm having a problem with my car sputtering and/or losing all throttle response in heavy rain or after hitting a deep puddle.

The accelerator will become completely unresponsive, but if I clutch in and downshift, the car will rev match, and then the accelerator will become unresponsive again.

OR

The engine will sputter but won't stall. When it does this the accelerator also becomes unresponsive and the car won't go back to idle. Only way to fix it is to shut off the car.

Once this happens, it normally takes about 30-45 minutes for all to go back to normal. The car will start right back up if I try, but will more than likely start fucking with me again.

I have only seen one possible problem it could've been. When inspecting the spark plugs, one of the clips holding the ignition cap on was gone, so the wiring was lose. I electrical taped the living fuck out of it so its tight and I'm assuming water proof again. Besides that I am at a loss. No water is getting into the ECU which is mounted on the side of the battery box. No water in anything important, at all.

It hasn't rained since I fixed the spark plug cap so I'm not sure if that was the problem but I'm thinking it could be...

Faulty accelerator pedal
Shitty Cobb parts
Clutch pedal sensor

Any ideas bros?

The frame is just a flat arrangement of metal with the drivetrain installed while the actual chassis is just bolted on. Very common design in American trucks and utility vehicles. My guess is that the people operating the lift mounted the lift points in the wrong spots and it ended up tearing the chassis off from the frame.

No shit, really? All this time I thought the frame was made of black licorice.

I removed the back seats that lead to the trunk, let them and the interior dry in the sun, and now I'm looking for ways to clean this up effectively. Should I sprinkle borax all over the interior after spraying it down with 8/1 water/vinegar solution and then hope for the best with another air-out and a wet/dry vacuum shampoo? Hopefully the vinegar/borax smell won't stick around for too long, and I can get back to driving this thing.

Depends on the car, not all cars have that issue. And how easy it is to get out depends where it snaps.

If theres still a bit poking out you can weld a nut or throwaway socket and pull it out, but if you break it off in the block, you're going to need to drill and retap.

Easiest way of preventing that is to drown the bolts in PB blaster a day or two before pulling them or to get a Acetylene torch (on low) and heat the bolt up and let it cool off that way the expansion and contraction induced should unseize it.
>>
>>17609132
You'll need to pull the carpet entirely out of the car and clean it with something that won't affect the Dyes in it, Not sure Vinegar or Borax would or would not affect the Dye. Then let it dry.

Leaving it in the car and cleaning it will prolong the smell of whatever cleaner you use and odds are won't completely kill the mold as it will probably stay in spots you can't completely clean.

The other option would be to call around to detail shops and ask if they'll pull the carpet and clean it for you, the bonus of this is that they will have industrial grade shit that maybe more effective.

I know interior pieces and exterior panels are different, but I'm wondering more about engine and suspension parts. What about insurance? If I managed to find and buy one, would I subject to the same ridiculous premiums of WRXs?

Also how would I fit in with the other WRX drivers? I'm not a dude bro, I don't vape and I'm not even close to being a normalfag.

That's literally it, the only difference is the interior is nicer and you have a different front end.

While most WRX drivers I've met have been dudebros, most of the Saab drivers I've met have been hipsters or geriatrics

The blue switch could be a kill switch for the fuel or pump or something which would prevent starting the car, but typically you hide those so that thieves can't find them. Why didn't you ask the previous owner of the car? Don't tell me you bought it from a stealership.

5-6 months ago, the low coolant light on my dash lit up. i checked the reservoir and it was low. got it filled up, things were fine.

just this week the light came back on again, and again my coolant level is low.

so i'm guessing i have a leak somewhere, but i never noticed any coolant on the ground underneath where the car has been parked, and i've checked the dipstick for any discolored oil and there was nothing out of the ordinary there either.

any idea where this leak may be? anywhere else i should check? whatever it is, it must be leaking out real slow.

The blinky thing has 3 wires coming out, and they go straight into the main wire harness. See finger.

The blue switch wasn't actually plugged into anything so that solves that half of the mystery.

I'm chasing a misfire on my 302 V8. What's the first thing I should check, sparkplugs? I have no idea when they were last replaced so I was planning on doing it anyways.

LMR has a bundle with plugs, wires, distributor cap and ignition coil. How much of that is necessary? I'd be happy to replace all of that but money is tight and I'd prefer to spend as little as I can.

If changing the wires doesn't help, what should I try next to find the cause of the misfire?
>>
>>17618063
Locks are easy to break, but a fuel pump cutoff is a nice idea. I worked at a used car lot in a darkening area and we pulled a fuse that took out power to the starter every night. They lost four steering columns over the years but the niggers never got our snatch truck. My bro could swap steering columns in less than an hour!

get some garden drainage flex hose and use the air vent from the far side of you to blow directly on your back and just keep it in the trunk until you need it. DYI solves all problems and doesnt break any rules
>>
>>17619682
I would check to see which plug isn't sparking, you can try taking them out one at a time and turning over the engine and you should see it spark. if you see one not sparking, move it to a different cylinder and see if it follows it, if so then its just a plug. if it doesnt follow, then try swapping the spark plug wires to see if it follows. Just keep working your way back up the chain. Since you have 8 cylinders, it's gonna take a few hours, but you wanted cheap, and this is the way to do it.
>>
>>17619844
That's normal behavior, the dog teeth run into each other between the selector ring, syncro and the gear. Pushing in the clutch just makes it so the input shaft can wiggle a little bit and go into gear. It cant move when its connected to the engine. Try sliding into any other gear then go back into first.
>>
>>17620024
yeah ive noticed it works if i go into another gear then back into first without needing the clutch. interesting, thanks

I rear ended a car (I'll leave out the story to excuse my dumbassery) and the collision repair quotes me 5500 dollars. Insurance quoted me 2800. All that is wrong is the grill over the radiator is fucked, a light is shattered, and the hood is crumpled back.

That's about 600 dollars worth of parts online, and I can pop the hood back to an imperfect condition myself.

What do I do?

They're probably going to total the car.
>>
>>17621098

>>

Honestly, I don't think so. I hit a pick up. It hit the grill area but the bumper is pristine (my bumper went under the pickup, if that makes sense visually).

There aren't any dents or scratches on my bumper. The grill for the radiator, though, is thoroughly fucked. And the hood crumpled back.

My DD kicked the bucket finally and left me with my project/fun car 89 LX Mustang. The Mustang is a really shitty DD, being uncomfortable and its a gas guzzler.

I was looking on craiglist to find another cheap DD.

What do you guys think of these?
https://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/d/honda-crx-hf/6236882896.html

https://lawrence.craigslist.org/cto/d/acura-integra/6240042556.html

I'm leaning more towards the Subaru, just because it has the most info and it looks nice.
I also would like to save that CRX before someone rices it, and it would be the opposite of my mustang in terms of gas mileage. I'm mostly worried about it being "old". I have no problem with it being that old, but I think it would probably be better to have a newer car for a DD.

I mostly do city driving right now, but I might have a job in another city coming soon so I'll then be highway driving, and I don't think a slow CRX HF would have any merits for highway driving other than being fuel efficient as fuck.

I didn't see any other dedicated CL thread so I figured I should post here.

I own a 1988 Mercedes Benz 300E with a M103 engine and a 1993 MR2 with 3S-GE engine. While I'm relatively happy with both cars after spending some time upgrading their suspension and tires I can't help but to wish my shitboxes had a bit more power (especially the one that is supposed to be a sportscar). I'm not aiming for absurd amount of power but I wish I could break the 200hp barrier with both cars and getting around 300hp with one of them would be perfect.

However unless I'm missing something getting any noticeable gains from N/A engines isn't exactly cheap or easy so should I look into turbocharging, engine swaps or is there some other way? Any practical ideas on getting more power from either car/engine?
