For 1000 dollars drop 500 on 4 Focal, Hertz, or if you want to save some money Infinity or CT Sounds, and then amplify them with a 400-500 watt 4-channel amp.

Kenwood's 900.5 5 channel amp is killer. Focal's have been on sale on Crutchfield for a while now, I picked up PS130v's for half price.

Those 4x50 headunits never actually put out 50w max though, and the rms is much lower.

OP, I havnt fucked with the car audio scene in years and /o/s not the best place to ask, but for 1k you can for sure get a 4 channel amp, type R speakers, and a decent headunit.

If you like bass, a 4 channel can also power the two front speakers, leave the back speakers unamplified, and bridge the other 2 channels to run one or two 10" sub(s) in the back. Depends on what you are looking for, just do some research

for the best sound it would be wise to get a 4 channel amp and some new speakers
throwing in a couple sets of $400 speakers will sound nice but sending them the crappy power from a stock stereo will limit them, like putting crappy gas in a performance engine
about $200 for a 4 channel Rockford Fosgate Amp
Spend the rest on speakers, if you can find them grab some Focal or Hertz for top tier or if you want to save a little cash check out Fosgate or any other decent name brand
