I have the opportunity to buy a turbo 740 wagon for $300, have a 4 bolt sbc laying around, a th400 also laying around, a 9 inch I can get shortened, and can buy a cheap diesel turbo off a friend. How solid of a setup would this be. I have experience with building N/A high horsepower cars, but not really any with turbos.
Buy it, see what is really wrong. Fix like a quarter of the problems, then sell it for way more.. Older wagon Volvo's are going up and up in price.

240 wagons are still worth something. 740 wagons are worth absolutely nothing :(

What sort of SBC are we talking about here? Four bolt main says to me truck engine so that's good but if it's some turd from the 70's or 80's the original heads will be a major bottle neck and carbs don't mix well with turbos in a street application. I would just do the swap and leave it n/a, there are no off-the-shelf kits for a turbo SBC in a Volvo so you're looking at significant time and expense in a full custom setup. Depending on how much power you make you'll probably want to tub the rear so you can actually fit enough rubber back there to put the power to the ground as opposed to just blowing the tires off the thing at half throttle. If you aren't drag racing I wouldn't bother with the tubs or even the 9in swap, Volvos have a Dana 30 in them stock and it's just fine for most V8 swaps making less than 400hp.
