Remind me again why Macan exists? Weren't Crossovers meant for poor people who can't afford SUVs but want the height and perceived status?

Crossover market got so hot and made a full circle that Porsche needed to make a cheaper Cayenne because otherwise people would look for other brands?

An unfortunate truth is that without the Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera, Porsche would be screwed. Those cars are cash cows, meant to fund cars like the 911 and 718. So while cars like the Cayenne and Macan might not be "true" porsches, they're not going anywhere. Now all you have to do is wait and hope porsche doesn't go the same route as BMW.
