Ive actually ran into this problem. It depends on the car obviously but if you have coil overs and you lower them too far, the bottom of the strut will rub against the CV joint and cut through it.
Obviously that pic is that situation taken to the extreme.

I had a customer who I had to call the police on because I wouldn't let her leave with a right front rotor that didn't look much different from that except it was still in one piece. She never did come back to have any more work done.
She called some lawyer and got him to call me and tell me that I was effectively holding her hostage when I gave her two perfectly reasonable options. I'd do the brakes, or she'd get a tow truck to carry it to another auto shop, but there was no way in hell that I was letting her take that car anywhere else.

It's a good thing that the same law which regulates restaurants and bars doesn't regulate auto service shops. In my state of washington, if a bar or restaurant lets a patron leave drunk, the law says any accident is partially the financial responsibility of that restaurant or bar. If similar laws existed for cars, then the auto shop that let her car back on the road would also be at fault. It could also be a good scamming trick if someone had a bad car but no insurance, they would visit a shop, document that they had visited such a shop on a specific date. Then if there is an accident, they don't go bankrupt because the victim will sue the shop instead of the driver who has no insurance.
