It looks long because it doesn't have a roof spoiler and the exhaust is hidden, but effectively it's the same as a large bunk 388 with a setback axle. A 389 would be far worse because it's got an even longer hood AND a forward axle.

Straw trucks a cute, CUTE, but wouldn't it be smarter to buy something with double rear axles you can haul other stuff when it's not straw season? Are these actually just parked most of the year?

Length doesn't have much to do with it, what kills the Paccars are the turn radius because the tires don't cut as sharp.I think Cascadias have 50° and 579s have 43° or something like that. I've done both and stepping out of a FL and into a Pete is really challenging. You overshoot every turn and undershoot every back until you learn.
But if you're setting your tandems back for no reason then you might just be retarded, idk. Having the wheels forward makes it technically, objectively, scientifically easier to back because your total wb is shorter. You just have to aim the overhang into the hole.
>>
>>17553795

Do truckers actually use CB radios? My buddy and I have started a business and we need to do very light deliveries and are picking up a Ford Ranger to do so.
We kind of want to check out a CB radio to pass the time while alone on the highway. Will we actually be able to hear anyone? And will anyone be able to tell where / who we are? I imagined we'd get told to fuck off by real truckers if they knew we were trying to play trucker fag while driving a 4 cylinder ranger.

>try getting back over but he's already locked his brakes and the car swerved back and forth and hit where my landing gear is

Am I fucked? He was felony speeding since it was CA and I had signal on and I didn't hit him first

can I get any other opinions?

I found it weird that the cop didnt tell me who was at fault, do I literally just have to wait and can I fight the case if its against me? I feel like a good I can make the case that he was in the wrong and since I technically didnt swipe him, he couldve avoided the collision with not locking the brakes like full retard since I was only maybe 1/3 into his lane at most. him going 90 mph was his downfall

Some of us, but I, for one, would like to drive in America for the distance and segregation from the general public.

Driving in the UK, just seems like a normal job. It is shit, but it's easy asf.

The distance is great but segregation? You'll be driving with the general public on the roads all the time. Tollways are typically smooth sailing though. For some reason more people tend to follow traffic laws there.
>>
>>17563769
We also have millions of miles more road and several times as much freight as your little rainy island country, so maybe, just maybe, what works for you might not work as well for us.

>How many hours do you work?
My contract is 'flexible', which means I get between 35 and 45 hours a week depending on demand. It's usually around 40.
>Is it like the US where 40 hours is full time with 1.5x pay over 40?
That's the USUAL method. However, the union recently traded my time-and-a-half overtime and weekend rates for a higher base pay, hence the assured pay rises for the next two years.
Considering I seldom work overtime and never weekends, I came out ahead on that. Why have an overtime rate I hardly get when I could just make more money?

I'm the warehouse worker. Seriously contemplating truckering, though, if I can find somewhere that'll give me weekends off or at least two days a week in a row to ride my motorbike.

Because Americans still live in the '80s and think cabovers with decent ride comfort and heat shielding don't exist. Also because Americans are bad drivers and know they will rear-end another semi in their Peedrbild at some point so they feel safer with eight feet of hood in front of them.

But honestly, these are some good advice responses. I'm better at giving advice and not being able to follow through on my own words, you know?
Also, I found out that when I did pizza delivery 5 years ago that this really cute naive girl crushed on me hard. Now she's dating some dude who kinda resembles me, but is 100+ more pounds and more cringy than I am. She did the same thing, always butt into convos just to have a say. So it might be a clue, Scooby-Doo.
And one more also. That rubber ducky is the sexiest co-rider on the road I've seen yet. It's more aesthetic than these plush bears and bunnies in the dash of most trucks. Def get you laid in 5.1 seconds.

Never seen a tractor and trailer come back on a long ass flatbed like this before. I guess one of the trailer bearings seized and since it's a single axle, it's not possible just to chain it up like a regular 2-axle trailer.
>>
>>17576969
The other nice thing is they are finally getting a bit more heavy duty tractors with the newest Internationals.

We are one of the few locations that delivers the Naked Juice and cold Tropicana with the rest of the stuff, so we have the longer trailers with the reefer. Those DuraStars with the Maxxforce N7, or the KWs with that smaller Cat (7.7L? Something like that) do not have the power for those big trailers.

I actually read an article awhile back talking about how local delivery trucks kept going smaller for some time with the advent of reliable automatics because they thought the small engine plus torque converter would work fine for lower speed city driving. But then you have to remember that it's a turbocharged engine without enough power for our 16.5 bay trailers (43'? 46'? I forget) so you are redlining every gear accelerating and cruising at 2200rpm on the highway. This means that the things are still getting 5mpg and it's a lot more stress on the small engines. I also think that they bought lots of those tractors before we had the reefers, so they were much shorter and lighter 10-bay or 12-bay trailers.

But anyway the newer tractors are 9L-11L engines instead and they are much better to drive. And it's not just our location, but tons of other companies are going larger with the engines on their medium duty trucks. The fuel mileage is about the same because you don't have to run the thing at redline the whole time and the engines are lasting longer with less issues.

Maybe it is just a DuraStar. The WorkStar is the only other model offered with that Cummins and it doesn't look like that.

But it's a little different from the older DuraStars. The older 4x2 Durastar tractors almost seem like they just took some shitty straight truck and slapped a fifth wheel on it. I can pull up to a similar straight truck and I sit about the same height, maybe an inch or two higher in those late 00's DuraStars. These newer ones with the N9 just seem like a bigger truck. There is a little more space between the cab and trailer and they sit higher.

I wonder if we will get any rental trucks by the end of this summer. So many tractors in fleet. If they get another Penske 10spd Volvo, or even a Freightshaker, I'm going to grab that bitch right away. They are 4x2's, but they are actual Class 8 tractors and it's nice actually having a truck that feels like it's up to the task of pulling those trailers. I would take an old KW T-800 all day to pull my trailer if they would fit under the bay trailers. But for now I have the old 8100 and it feels much better than the 4700s because those 8100's were actually originally purchased to to pull 40'+ trailers, not just the little bay trailers they had 20 years ago.

Fuck Peterbilt. This 579 started just falling the fuck apart after 350k miles. At 380k now, ac broke no one can figure out why, all 6 acc outlets broke, and 3 dpf system faults in the past 2 weeks, shops keep fixing that then it breaks again a couple days later. I'm glad I'm a company driver getting free hotels and breakdown pay for the dpf system, but it's hot as tits and now I can't even charge my cellphone anymore.

Welcome to the 21st century. It's something like 95% of trucks sold in the last 5 years were "meme tier aero junk" trucks. There's no place anymore for trucks that get 4mpg and can't turn.
>>
>>17579045
The white house is actively running long nose trucks off the road, too. Model year 2018 trucks are required to be 20% more efficient than the national average in 2011, and 2025 models will be 20% more efficient than 2018s. And as result of being more efficient, it also raises the purchase and maintenance prices of new trucks, making it harder for anyone but mega fleets to comply. This with the ELD mandate is basically the feds trying to ruin OOs out of business and every major company will be covenant lapdogs like that fucking faggot Williams of Maverick and everyone in the Trucking Alliance

Hi truckers. Is there any money to be made in trucking with lighter duty trucks, like F350's, F450's, and the like? Are there certain cargos these types of trucks are designed to tow?

I have a stable six-figure job but my dream would be to one day own a few light trucks annd have some guys to drive them around the province.
>>
>>17585218
There's not much a hotshot can do that an 18-wheeler can't, and what a hotshot saves in fuel economy, a big truck makes up for in longevity and flexibility.
>>
>>17585218
Hotshots get shit on pretty hard because you're limited pretty heavily by what you can haul, you still have to work just as hard to make less money, and the lower startup and operational costs usually end up getting cancelled out by higher maintenance costs. That's why it's such a niche business, it's really hard to do it profitably compared to a real truck.
>>
>>17585166

Meh, that's why I never drove truck for a living. The job is literally dealing with assholes like this all damn day. Was bad enough being a mechanic, fixing their dumb shit.
>>
>>17585253
>>17585258
So what are hotshots usually used to tow?

I see guys driving around in Ford superduties and huge RAM diesels all the time around here but they're always super-duper-crew-cabs without anything in the bed or on the tow hook.
>>
>>17585278
Mostly RVs that are too tall for stepdecks, but if they've got a trailer they'll haul light machines, cars, foam insulation, and their biggest niche, hotshot oil patch parts. They'll sit at a machine shop for days waiting for an emergency part to be fabricated, then drive it straight out to an oil rig when it's done.
>>
>>17585278
Typically 3-car wedges and any LTL flatbed freight. Where they really shine is personal auto transport and RVs, but those are the only 2 things I can think of that heavy trucks can't do.
