welcome to capitalist america friend would you like your leasemobile in white, silver, or black?
>>
>In the United States, for regulation purposes, government authorities allow cars of a given model year to be sold starting on January 1 of the previous calendar year. For example, this means that a 2017 model year vehicle can legally go on sale on January 1, 2016.

It's to make the cars seem "futuristic"
>>
So twenty years down the line, will these cars be considered 2017 models or 2018 models?

Until oil reaches such a scarcity that nobody can afford to drill and refine it because nobody can afford to buy the refined good, we will have ICE automobiles. Some government entities may ban ICE in certain places but they won't be universal.

Who knows, India and China might end up as the last bastion of ICE engines. They certainly won't fall for the environmentalists' drivel.

Why don't more manufacturers do it this way?

I'm more worried that the ICE will be made obsolete by the EV, and we won't even have to move to a different battery chemistry to do it. With the 200+ mile ranges and all the preorders as well as Musk's seemingly unstoppable ambition, it seems like we have 20 years at best. The ICE is already obsolete for a lot of people.

>Musk's seemingly unstoppable ambition, it seems like we have 20 years at best.
Tesla is basically standing upon US Federal subsidies. If they run out, he's in trouble.
>The ICE is already obsolete for a lot of people.
Far less than you think. Most drivers have an ICE car.

If EV becomes competitive enough to replace ICE then by all means, let the EV revolution explode. Who isn't at least a bit hyped about the possibilities of EV? Instant power and torque is just one of many benefits. In my opinion EV just isn't quite *there* yet and forcing the market's hand away from ICE through government fuckery is the wrong way to go.

because there could be an unforseen issue with production or shipment/delivery.
also, it doesnt really matter.

I get the performance potential, but I'm mainly into old American land boats. Can't hold on to those of all the gas stations are closed. I'm worried about this happening before I graduate and get a real career to afford them as projects.

The oldies and the goodies of ICE will be around for a long time yet, anon. Even if EV becomes commonplace in 20 years, enthusiasts of all flavors will hold on to ICE. In some years down the line after that ICE may be forced off of public domain, relegating it to the track. Enthusiasts will still pursue and perform in ICE vehicles of many kinds, and thousands of those who remember ICE and kids who want to gawk at the "ancient technology" will flock to see them race.

Don't see it as an end of an era, see it as the beginning of a new one.

This has been going on for ages... own a 1990 with an 89 build date, along with a 2008 with an 07 build date. Not sure why this is surprising...
