The COG is a meme because of the exhaust headers and wet sump. The WRX I drove felt very unbalanced at idle. I don't know if it was just that specific WRX.
>>
>>17550471
Awful to work on and takes up lots of space for no real measurable advantage
>>
>>17550478
This, they put the engine on the front subframe so they can drop the whole engine to work on it.
>>
>>17550471
>redpill me on x

No. Fuck you. Google it. Read up on the basic principles and how it differs from other engines.
Read and make your own understanding of how it works, and what pros and cons it has.
See some unknown term or part you haven't a clue what it's for? Google that one too.
Then you can come here and start a thread. Preferably something better than "please spoonfeed my lazy ass".
>>

>>17551587
Changing a simple O2 sensor for one, I had to cut a wrench in half and weld it back together to get it down into the bottom of the engine bay to get the sensor out, you can't get at it from under the car and getting at it from above requires that you make or buy a special tool.
Also, valve cover and head gaskets lol

What turbo car isn't a cunt to work on? They have a fuck ton of more stuff packed into the engine bay.

Try O2 on NA Subaru, easy as fuck, can access from top or bottom of the car.

Also, wrench on an O2 sensor? Are you dumb?

Don't need need to jack up the car to do it on NA model... it's right by the front right drive axle, unplug the sensor, and use long extension to remove it.
>>
>>17551613
So it was hard because you didn't have the right tool? I'm not surprised.
>>
>>17551641
It wasn't even turbo, it was NA lol
Yeah good luck getting that socket in there, you'd have to pull the entire exhaust system off to use something like that on the O2 sensor.
You obviously aren't working on the same car that I was.
BTW I own one of those sockets already, so stay btfo
>>
>>17551514

Fucking Savage
>>
>>17551645
yes let's have every single part on the car need a special tool, that way you have to run to the dealer every 10 minutes to buy a 100-300 dollar tool to remove an O2 sensor or a motor mount or something.
Sounds great dude.
>>
Pros:
Low centre of gravity
Only slightly longer than a transversely mounted inline engine, putting the centre of mass closer to the axle
Allows for symmetrical AWD systems
Bretty gud balance, allowing a lighter rotating assembly, therefore more rev happy
Sounds nice

>Cons
Wide as fuck, arguably less efficient packaging than a V4 or VR4 (yes, Lancia made VR4 engines)
Ballache to work on due to tight packaging. Cylinder head components are the main problem.
Double the amount of heads compared to an I4
>>
>>17551626
>lol
>>
>>17551662
>Only slightly longer than a transversely mounted inline engine
Why is that a pro?
That's not a pro lol
>Allows for symmetrical AWD systems
So does an I4, just nobody seems to want to put them in the right direction.
>>

The exhaust drops off with 6 bolts, and 4 rubber hangers, doesn't seem like a big deal to me, especially if you have it on a hoist already.

its not very good, the only advantage is the low center of gravity, but you could just lay an inline 4 on it's side and get the same cg without the stupid features of a boxer

>heavy because 2 cylinder banks that are far apart from each other

Haven't really been in a smooth idling vehicle before, period. The Boxer feels substantially smoother at 2k+ compared to V layouts.

Newer vehicles feel smooth idling but that's about it.

>>17550478
I wouldn't say awful, but get use to pulling the motor out. Saves a ton of frustration. First Subaru I owned I did head gaskets with the engine in the car as I was afraid to pull the engine out. I'll never do that again.

>>17550474
Don't expect reliability from a Subaru, OP. Original 2.5 in my GT experienced the infamous ring land failure, the JDM EJ2.0 has a terrible knock, and I'm waiting on another JDM EJ right now while I finish rebuilding the original 2.5. For whatever reason I started out with a budget rebuild in mind, but I've gone way overboard already. I'm blaming /o/.

I've driven domestic products harder with longer play times. Even my 85 Nissan took more abuse.
>Love. It's what makes Subaru, a Subaru.

>>17550563
Everyone I know that owns a Subaru does their own work. Probably because labor rates on a Subaru are ridiculously expensive.

Power steering rack is going for a shit though pretty sure.

You can baby a Northstar and claim it's reliable.

A 350 or 5.0 will handle WOT for extended durations. A 2.2 ecotec or a Ford 4.9 i6 will handle more abuse than anything Subaru has pushed out to production. Even the 2.5 Iron Duke will be okay with consistent WOT.

>>17553573
Have you owned the car since it was new?

>>17553594
If you can't beat on something and utilize it to it's fullest extent, it's not a reliable engine.

If 60% throttle is as much as the engine will handle reliably, then it's not reliable. It's pushed way beyond what it can handle for a numbers game.

I love Subaru's, but let's not pretend they're reliable.

>>
>>17554122
My analogy is fine. Most engines aren't deigned with autists playing racecar all day long in mind. Moreover, bad driving habits aren't just using more than 60% throttle. It's not lugging the engine. It's not launching the car at every stoplight and then flatfoot shifting through every gear. Like I said before, engines don't destroy themselves.
>>
>>17551506
>hurr durr imma do something the wrong way and complain when its hard :dddddd

A boxer engine can technically be almost as smooth as its inline counterpart, while still saving longitudinal space, having more torsional rigidity, and having a really low center of gravity
Also since they're shorter, they have less cam/crankshaft under lugging (which you shouldn't do anyway)
The problem is that they are really wide (why you mostly see boxers up to 6cyl instead of anything else) so they are a bit difficult to make an engine bay for, and they get "difficult to work on" because the engine bay isn't as wide as people wish, but if the engine is on a wider bay, or outside the car or whatever its the same thing as any other engine.
They can be built to perform like heaven (I.e. porsche 700hp 911 gt2).
