Nothing.

Did anything go wrong with it? It's just another VW Golf. And you pretty much either like them or you don't.

It's fwd

>OG beetle was designed by Ferdinand "Gas the Kikes, race war now" Porsche
>it was a Porsche at heart, with the drive wheels being at the rear like God intended and the engine at the rear to minimize drivetrain loss and provide weight
>modern beetles still retain that goofy porsche face but are wrong wheel drive
>they don't even have Porsche tuned versions to live up to their legacy
>>
>>17545412

VW overestimated the market for cute cars that remind people of the 60s

Went to drive in one..
I point to the dash "what is that?"
"oh you can put a flower in it, its a vase."
got out of the car.
>>
my family has a turbo 2002

the interior is broken as shit and the ruberizing they put on the plastic parts turns into black sticky good that gets everywhere, the electrics are all sorts of fucked and are always giving us trouble, and the engine isn't particularly reliable

the car is, however, extremely fun to drive
it accelerates quickly and corners nicely
I like the way it looks and think it gets a lot of unnecessary hate for its looks (it looks better than most sedans these days)

also, I really like the flower vase
when I was driving it I kept fresh flowers in it
it's nice to surround yourself with green living things

First gen was a hit, stylishly cute econoboxes aren't plentiful. Second-gen is less cute than the first, and too big and heavy to be a thrifty purchase so why not just buy one of the 9001 angular/weird crossovers.

The problem with the 2012 Beetle redesign wasn't the redesign itself. The redesign is great and addresses every single problem people had with the previous New Beetle.
The problem is no one paid attention and as a result, people assumed it hadn't changed and assumed it's still the same friendly girly car.
The fact they promoted it with a Britney Spears music video and gave a bunch of them away on Oprah didn't help.

Absolutely nothing went wrong - they set out to provide an updated version of the Beetle, as an efficient fun car. They succeeded. Worked for VW for a year and drove plenty; I would never personally own one, but I will not deny they are a fun car to drive.
>>
>>17548752
Only 1998-2011 Beetles had the vase.

so much god damn fun to drive and nobody thinks they're actually fast(ish)

when I was driving my family's turbo bug people would give me shit all the time about "faking" a turbo decal on it

plus they can do this

honestly, the stigma against the new beetle is a blessing in disguise.

tons of beetle turbos out there waiting to be bought for cheeps.

The important question is, can they tear up the touge? I'd love to assemble a team of FWD sleeper meme cars and terrorize the local teams like the Myogi Night Kids or the Akina Speed Stars.

>>

It's important to make the distinction between the current model and its predecessor. The 1998-2011 "New Beetle" might be the worst fucking car to ever come out of a Volkswagen factory.

The 2012+ Beetle is fine, but it's also yet another Golf derivative that no one really needed. Personally I think it would have been better to resurrect the car as a subcompact/supermini, more in the frugal spirit of the original, and to get some coverage in that segment that VW is currently lacking (in the American market).

>>17548873
The Porsche designation of the original KdF-Wagen was Type 60. "Type I" was the name as a Volkswagen, which came later.
>>
>>17551746
They're rusted out shitheaps that got scrapped in droves because they were a garbage car. If there is anything left of one that's still worth driving at this point, it's going to fetch a premium just due to how rare pristine models are. You can still lowball the fuck out of those assholes because they know exactly how much it costs to make them driveable and why theirs isn't.
>>
>>17551824
what if theirs is? :^)
