Does anyone have a dashcam?

Does it enhance your life in any way?

Do you upload recorded footage on to the Internet?
>>

definitely worth
this bitch took half the paint off my bumper and would have injured her 12 year old kid that wasnt wearing a seat belt if i wasnt paying attention. she claimed to not see me. that kid was experiencing his first adrenaline rush. kid saw his short life flash before his eyes. was actually trembling when they opened the door.

then she denied everything and lied out her ass to the insurance companies

i never mentioned to her i have a cam
she was dropped by her insurance and may be facing fraud charges

i live in a hot climate so i opted for a cam without a battery. if you go cheap the batteries have been known to rupture and burn your car down.. mine has a small capacitor was $75 on amazon. a188c

>>17539360
What dash cam model have you got?
>>
>>17539394
This is the real question right here.

WHICH DASHCAM IS BEST?

At my work we see dashcams in about half the cars that come in for service. The trouble is, ALOT of them are absolute crap. Terrible fields of view, terrible quality, bulky and impossible to tuck somewhere unobstructive...

Ideally, I would want something with a wide FOV, slim with an angled lense so it can fit closer to the windshield or actually part of the rear view itself, with a second lens at the rear window.

Wiring can be tucked behind the headliner. Power can be hidden behind the pillar covers and under the headliner aswell, I have no issues with this.
I just want a GOOD solution, that doesn't look like shit.
>>
I have the "Yi Dashcam" that you can get on Amazon, best dashcam I owned so far for the money, only like $50 I think. Quality is great, the app actually works really well. Records in 3 min intervals, I believe it auto-writes over old footage so you don't have to constantly deleted old footage manually. Owned it for a few months, never had an issue or freezing issue. You just go to the app, find what chunk of footage you want to download, and it downloads straight to your phone and you can do whatever you want with it.
>>
>>17539448
and yes it enhanced my life. My brother borrowed my car once and he had a fight with his gf in it and he forgot I had a dashcam installed, so I got to listen to the spicy fight lul.
>>
>>17539441
I'm strongly considering the KDLinks R100, a NEXGADGET camera that's similar but only $60, the Papago Gosafe 268, Street Guardian SG9665GC, and BlackVue DR450-1CH.

Should I avoid any of these?

I'm only sure of the Blackvue and Street Guardian being able to take the heat in my car. It may get up to 120 degrees in there.

>dashcam on
>relay truck model/color, driver appearance, and the fact he's an out of state faggot Texan
>he's on an off ramp lane
>pull up along side on the left (2 lane exit) to get his face on cam
>he cuts across my lane, almost hitting me, and almost clips the exit sign as he crosses over the grass embankment to get back on the interstate
>rear end gets flicked up and now he's driving on his front 2 wheels like a dog doing a hand stand
>ends up regaining control too late, and side swiped the center barrier on the driver side
>inform the dispatch he has some fresh paint transfer on the left side of his car with a barrier
>end up taking the off ramp, and then blasting through to the next on ramp
>get to the other side and hickman is now barreling down the interstate
>giving the dispatch all the info as it happens
>5 minutes later and a cop is coming up an on-ramp and sees the truck and me
>pulls us both over
>I hand the officer my flash card
>he asks if I want to be in court
>tell him the evidence speaks for itself
>continue to work
>a year later I have my flash card back and the texan is in prison for violating his parole (leaving texas) to get weed.
>will be stuck in prison for 5 years

It's my magnum opus dashcam video, I'm trying to get enough footie to make my own comp and get fat cash from ad revenue since it's all my own content.

Compared to the A119, it's got a better sensor but records at a lower resolution. Footage looks much better. It's also better at night.

For a few bucks you don't have to worry about someone lying about an accident. Got one after some deranged boomer ran into my parked car and blamed me. Won that battle with the insurance company as he was completely full of shit.

>Do you upload recorded footage on to the Internet?

No, only giga level faggots do that - my daily drive is boring. If you are uploading a vlog about assholes on the road you are probably the asshole.
>>
>>17539303
>Do you upload recorded footage on to the Internet?
Some people do that as a record of isolated incidents or even crimes they spot with their dashcam. If you go browse Rate-Driver, you can see some webm evidence in some posts.

Example: driver trying to run over someone
http://rate-driver.com/wi/501wvv

Uploading such footage doesn't make you the asshole. But other assholes that regularly like to do asshole things will feel threatened that people can and do upload footage.

I use this dash cam in my DD. It's alright. The quality is decent up close but at speed or distance it has trouble focusing on license plates. The mount it comes with has literally melted in the sun on me, twice. Their support is solid, though. They sent me new mounts no questions asked. When I get home maybe I can link a sample video for you to peep.
>>
>>17540145
why especially as a Lyft driver? if you're talking about shady passengers, wouldn't a dashcam fail to catch that as they face forward?

I had installed a dashcam but I had a problem where it would only toggle its powerstate when I turned the car on. Like I turn car on, cam turns on, I turn car off, and cam stays on... Then I turn car back on and cam turns off, etc. So I removed it to troubleshoot it and I solved the problem, sort of, it was my cigarette lighter's fault but I have no other way to power it.

I don't know how to fix that and I have been too lazy to put it back in. I should do that.
>>
>>17543262
Wish I could hide the wiring, had it set up sweet in my old car, tucked the wiring under the roof liner, in the passenger side pillar, into the dash and coming out from beneath the stereo so the only wiring you could see is where it plugged in to the cig lighter. Can't mount it li9ke that in my new car and it's doing my head in trying to find a way to tuck everything in.

Severe road rage, idiocy, etc.

A side story...

Dude pulled up behind me in a Polaris Slingshot at a red light. I'm in the left lane that becomes the go straight lane. The right lane becomes right turn only. The light turns green but the next light a half block ahead is red. I accelerate slowly because why floor it for 100 feet then slam the brakes for the next light. The Slingshot jerks over into the right lane and floors it past me then jerks over, crossing my lane and promptly slamming his brakes as he enters the left turn lane.
As I pull up next to him he yells over "why da fuck er yew gein so slow?"
I roll down my window and tell him he should wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle.
This really pissed him off.
Hes like "it got seat belts n a steer ing wheel. I aint gotta wear shit, dumbass"
Then the light turned green before I could tell him that his 12000k police-blue HIDs were illegal.

Get a call from insurance saying im in shit for filing a false report. Luky i put a beast of a memory card in the cam and was able to find and send the fottage.

They ended up processing my claim in full, they also found security footage from the car park backing up dash cam footage.

Fucksticks use that neighborhood as a high speed cut through to bypass traffic on the main roads. The people who live there are sick of their streets being used as basic bitches racing strips, running over dogs and cats, blowing through stop signs at 40 mph. Fuck them. Fuck anyone who speeds through neighborhoods. When cunts race up to my bumper in neighborhoods, I slow down to the exact speed limit and stop for a full 3 seconds at sto signs. This is where people, their kids, their animals live. Not a side street for you to roleplay Takumi on.

>cars and people go at the same time
Unlike Japan which has major intersection have all cars stop while all pedestrian crossings are full open, the USA is a car-based country with relatively poor (to Japan) mass transit. That's why cars and pedestrians all move in the same direction by taking turns. That way, some cars are always moving.

When I was in Tokyo and to a lesser bit in Osaka, I could get around without a car because the mass transmit was far superior to that in the USA. And zero worries about being mugged at the transit stations unlike in the USA!

Of course, there are some drawbacks. Picture shows an example of how train cars are overloaded by Shinjuku Station (Tokyo) staff physically shoving passengers tight like sardines into each train car. The staff fights hysteresis desperate before each new train comes in on an average of every 2 minutes. People have to be loaded in and doors closed and the train having left the station before the next one can arrive without crashing into the previous train. So a 2 minute separation is a desperately tight schedule on certain lines. Not every line is that tight though.

I'm tired of replacing the expensive Li-Ion batteries in the current dashcam. If a capacitor holds enough charge to keep the thing powered up for 10 minutes after I park, or to wake up and start recording if a car hits my car when it is parked (and power is off) then I like the capacitor version.

I actually have the A119S too
And it has the GPS module

BUT, the GPS is actually encoded into the video in a proprietary format.
They can NOT see the GPS data unless you tell them its there and use the Viofo program

Just dont hardcode the GPS data on the screen if you dont want to.
I do have the GPS showing in my videos, but I do NOT have the speed showing. I can always bring the speed up with the software in court if I need it.

I can understand not wanting speed to be shown, but how would having GPS coordinates be self incriminating?

>Like I turn car on, cam turns on, I turn car off, and cam stays on.

Check your settings to see if you have the "Parking Observer" mode on. Or whatever they call that mode which leaves the camera on for 5 to 10 minutes after you park the car. Since such a mode isn't named "Automatic Power Off" or "Power Mode Toggle" it isn't obvious that it can also control whether or not the cam uses the battery to stay on after the accessory socket power turns off.
>>
>>17558228
>Capacitors only power the cam long enough to save the current file when you turn your car off.
Do they also make sure the correct time is used when I start the car again? I assume they provide power during the time it is not powered by the car. But if the time is forgotten in one day, that is too short a time limit for the capacitor.

That sucks if the capacitor ones keep losing track of time. I don't want to have to recheck the time each time I get into the car. When it did forget the time for you, was that after at least one day of not driving the car? Or how long a time do you think needs to elapse before the capacitor model forgets the time?

Do you know of any reliable capacitor ones?

As an added note, some dashcams that support GPS might also sync the clock using the GPS signal. >. . . somehow this is my fault
It's your fault because your accuser feels personally threatened by people like you recording their misdeeds. Many people hate or feel personally threatened by surveillance especially if they like to be occasionally doing a misdeed when they feel the victim is the real person at fault.

It's the similar reason the black and hispanic communities in my major city complain whenever more surveillance cameras are announced or new laws get passed. They have their council member vote no, but so far they are still a minority vote (unlike places like Detroit in the 1980's and 1990's). They claim it's just more ways to racially harass them with lawbreaking citations and arrests. Years ago, when penalties increased for drug dealing, the activists claimed it was motivated by racial discrimination since more than 50% of those arrested for selling illegal drugs (marijuana is legal here, but heroin, lsd, and meth are still illegal) are black. Thus legal penalties created a racially discriminating situation. Obama's justice department investigated and found that to be true, so the laws didn't have their penalties increased because it would penalize blacks and mexicans more than it penalized other races.

What you can do with your dashcam footage that shows the license plate number is make little snippets and convert to webm. Then upload each webm to http://rate-driver.com and that will document that car's misdeeds for others to see.

>I believe you'll find that most states have statutes which grant traffic control devices installed on private roadways
That is FALSE in the state of washington. Police can only give traffic citations for official signs registered with the DOT. Official signs have the DOT sticker or stamp on the back of the sign along with its registration number when applicable. That's why police cannot give tickets for the stop signs and speed signs in my HOA community which the HOA put up.

But the private property owner can use the situation of the offender ignoring the signs to request the police to trespass the offender off the property. The offender must leave and if not, the police can issue a trespassing citation.

if GPS is enabled and the antenna is plugged in, then yes, it will set the time from the GPS. daylight savings time adjustment is not automatic so you have to change the offset from GMT/UTC in the settings once when DST begins and once when it ends each year, but it keeps the clock on your dashcam accurate well within a second.

the a118c is the best bang for the buck camera. the original a119 and a119s v1 have issues with their GPS mount that were only addressed with the A119S v2.

if the money is a huge factor, go with an A118C from a reputable seller. If you can spend the extra cash, the a119 has a bigger screen, friendlier layout, and the GPS mount for the power cord (regardless of whether or not you enable GPS in the options) makes things look a lot cleaner.

the a119s has the sony exmor sensor, which has much better performance in low light conditions. if you only drive in cities or suburbs with street lighting, the A118C or A119 (non-S) is fine, but if you live in an area and drive at night on streets without streetlamps, then I would spring for the A119S personally.
>>
>>17565745
the battery is used to keep the time in models with a battery and the capacitor is used in models with a capacitor. Capacitors traditionally will lose the time if the cam doesn't receive power in a week, e.g. you have a car that kills the power to the dashcam with ignition off or shortly after. if you have a GPS model with the GPS antenna plugged in and GPS on, they will typically set the time initially and maintain the time from satellite timestamp.

>>17565141
see above reply. capacitors typically lose time if you don't drive within a week. GPS antenna mitigates this.

>>17562747

>>17561805
the GPS data is a really hard one to quantify. theoretically, it could help or hurt you. for a police conviction, the GPS in the device is not certified, so as far as helping/hurting you, it could be non-relevant there. in an insurance case, it might be different. it's harder to tell if GPS is on but not difficult to google, but dashcam ownership in the US is still relatively low. it's a risk, but I figure the importance of an accurate timestamp is more important than the risk of the GPS data being used against me.
(theoretically you could also use the frame rate and the known distance between two objects within a period of time to determine a speed too).

I have been wanting to invest in one. My friend told me it lowered his insurance by $30. I live in the trifecta of bad drivers living in a border city. We have shitty new Mexican drivers, Mexican drivers, and bad Texan drivers. My eyes are always peeled on the road for fear of one of those people hitting me. It's a free-for-all over here. On the plus side my defensive driving skills have gone up exponentially.
>>
Is it usual to buy a dashcam and report it to your insurance company and hope for some lower rates?
Should I even bother telling them?
>>
>>17571376
Good thing that didn't happen at night. Yikes that block looks a bit dodgy but eh what the hell just keep driving if shit goes down again past 10pm. No one will see your plate if you throw some dirt on it.
>>
>>17571411
virtually no insurance companies offer discounts for dashcams, and if you have any reason to believe you are at fault in an accident, your insurance company might compel you to disclose the footage.

they tried to get it passed as a state law in New York for a 5% mandatory discount for a dashcam, but from what I heard that never went anywhere.
>>
>>17571417
Insurance companies have a big time struggle with this dashcam now being part of some peoples fall back on getting out of situations like so. Given the fact of 5% was the only given leasure with the discount, there are many discrepancies that need to go through a valid system that they have still yet to make to avoid lawsuits on their end.

I think the main problem is that it's not reliable, someone who has a dashcam is likely to be a better driver but a lot of dashcams are cheap shit that die/stop recording, a lot of dashcams have piss poor notifications for when they're not able to record (A119/A119S excepted), constantly writing to a MicroSD card can wear it out, particularly if it is not a high endurance card (and most of the dashcams are made out of china and suffer recording issues due to incompatibilities on Samsung & Sandisk MicroSD cards), etc... not to mention if you don't hardwire the power to ignition, it's easy for the DC plug to just pop out of the outlet in your car and the camera to not come on.

Viofo is the manufacture
SpyTec is a retailer, I think exclusive distributor

Get the A119s
>>
>>17571529
>>17553771
OCDTronic sells the Viofo A119, spytec is just a rebrand. ordered from spytec support before, had a bad customer service experience with them, would recommend you buy the A119S V2 from OCD Tronic instead.

christ. on fire before he even hit the ground.

do you get an insurance break for having a dashcam? I think I'm going to get some of those capacitor front/back cameras. Almost got in two accidents driving in WA last summer, and I'm moving there in a month. The drivers there aren't even aggressive like in NY or NJ, they're just fucking retards.

>sitting at intersection waiting to turn left
>I get a green arrow for protected left turn
>aware of retarded WA drivers so I looked before completing the turn
>asian woman in a little sedan comes barreling in from the right, running the light
>came within 3 feet of nailing her in the driver's door with my SUV

>sitting at another intersection waiting to turn left
>i get the green arrow
>opposing traffic has a right turn lane with a yield sign
>make my left turn as someone comes flying the other way into the right turn lane
>honks at me when he has to brake to avoid hitting me
I swear to god these mouth-breathing morons think yield means merge

most insurers will not give you a break for having a dashcam, but if you ever have an accident that's 0% at fault you would not pay deductible or face insurance premium hikes, and if you have an accident where it reduces your fault then it can lessen your liability/the impact.

e.g. if you make a left turn at an intersection when the light is green, and some idiot with a passenger in the car hits you, and they tell the cop that the signal was green for them, it's two against one without another witness there. whereas the dashcam can demonstrate that the light was green/conditions safe when you entered the intersection.

my brother's tale of woe
>living with me down in PA; I have moved there formally, but my brother has NY license
>he is going to a doctor's appointment. On a 2-2 road with a stop light. Brother is making a left turn (no left lane/guaranteed arrow on signal).
>Light turns green, he is waiting. Driver side front tire is on the yellow line when he is clobbered by a shitbox subaru. car is pushed more than 15 feet. brother is stopped.
>officer comes and sees the position of the car. brother? NY license/out of town. other driver? local. officer cites brother for improper left turn and writes up accident report saying my brother was in opposing lane

>(other driver also had a myspace on which he said he liked illegal driving and two prior accidents, convictions of illegal racing plead down to lesser offenses, etc.)

>brother goes to court in a suit and the improper left turn is plead down to "failure to produce registration"
>shithead's insurance company (GEICO) is a huge pain in the ass. Ours (not GEICO) takes all our statements and evidence. the myspace is not considered admissible. even with the citation dismissed, it's a left turn.
>unbelievably given the type of accident (left turn), GEICO and our insurance company settle for 51-49% fault. Almost equal fault, but barely more on my brother
>>
>>17570455
>NJ and NY drivers are just super aggressive and can be assholes
Add Chicago to that. There's no "maybe" because the society there is so full of people looking for an angle to get ahead. That mindset appears on the roadway too.
>>
>>17571731 here, continued
>shithead retains an attorney and claims whiplash etc. since my brother is majority at fault
>did I mention that shithead's dad is a doctor and shithead refused medical treatment when he was less than one hundred feet FROM A HOSPITAL (e.g. he went home and told dad about the accident and dad wrote him up the script)
>shithead settles with our insurance company. find out a couple years later that the settlement amount was $106,000 (my brother and I have the same prior addresses, and when I applied for a new auto insurance carrier it came up and they asked to make sure it wasn't me).

Forgot to mention shithead was doing almost twice the speed limit (physical crash evidence bore that out) up over the top of a hill (accident was a few feet before top of said hill).

A dashcam wouldn't have reduced my brother's insurance premiums BEFORE the accident, but as part of the claims process and determination of fault, it sure as shit would have played in the percentage of blame AFTER.

Shithead used his settlement money to get a Subaru WRX, which I hope he fucking crashes and dies in.

>>17571731
ugh, that's shitty, I'm actually moving from PA. People's driving isn't usually too bad here as long as you stay away from filthadelphia.

I'm definitely going to get some cameras, just have to figure out which ones.

Chinese companies are known to occasionally have "half price" or "discounted" specials to flush out returns, reconditioned, and defective models all at once.

It's a bit worrisome when you know more about the chinese parts supply market. Companies that make electronic parts have out of tolerance, "weak", and reject bad parts. But there is an active market for these parts that buys them up. Makes you wonder what products these parts end up in.

Capitalistic People look at accidents as opportunities to make money especially since court awarded damages aren't part of his income taxes. When opportunity knocks, WRX owners listen.
>>
>>17571912
I had pictures from his facebook demonstrating that he lost the neck brace he needed for "permanent injury" right after getting his check and bouncing up and down a track in his subie. If our (prior) insurance company wasn't a total bunch of limp dicked pussies, they would have spent a few hundred on a PI to follow him, take some pics, and prove that he defrauded them.

Not capitalistic people. I'm very much a capitalist and I believe in earning money through hard fair work. Not by stealing it from someone else. That's not a capitalist, that's a thief and a shit person.

It sucks that these cases happen but our judicial system gets it right most of the time and is pretty good (in comparison to countries around the world) at weeding out injustice.

I have a Rexing v1. The day quality is alright but the night quality is terrible. I've had it for about a year and haven't caught anything noteworthy with it yet.

>weeding out injustice
The doctor and his son performing this insurance fraud as well as unjustly tarnishing Anon is justice in its own way. Those people doing the fraud probably feel they are justly taking advantage of the system that has unjustly taxed them or has not given them all the services they wanted. So they feel justified in doing what they did.

I find that a lot of criminals have no sorrow about what they did. When white collar criminals ever have sorrow, it is usually only for getting caught.
>>
>>17572375
It is capitalism. It is just that you have your own version of how you perform capitalism. It is wrong to say that capitalism can only include fully legal acts within that specific society's cultural norms. Capitalism is independent of that.
