Is this a meme? My brake pedal feels kind of mushy, but not to a point where I wouldnt know how much pressure to apply.
Do these even do anything or is it a placebo?

Not a meme at all. It won't really make your brakes any more sensitive or touchy but if your car is more than 4 years old you will immediately notice a more direct and 'new car feel' to your brakes. They will also stay that way forever as they won't stretch.
It's a great upgrade and I recommend everyone do it.

new fluid and pads are enough for a DD, but braided steel brake lines are fantastic for a permanent upgrade to brake feel

FYI most car manufacturers already use Braided lines on points where the brake line needs to flex, and the metal brake lines don't stretch. Most of the new "feel" comes from fresh brake fluid.
No to say that aftermarket Kits aren't better that oem however.

I've owned several vehicles and none of them came with braided brake lines from the factory. Almost all 80's-90's jap shitboxes however

they're not even expensive, a full set is like $20-30 more than standard rubber ones
