Speaking of rust and godforsaken water leaks. This is a photo of the passenger rear side truck, looking down, just to the right of the spare tire.
The circle in yellow is around plastic body plugs like those used in rust proofing holes except these are about 1" in diameter. They fill a hole in the body metal and allow access to the rear bumper but also leak, for me on both sides.

I'm not exactly sure if I want it, but it's a fastback and will have a manual transmission.

195 hp 1.5L turbo
252 hp 2.0L turbo

I wish they turbo'd the K24.

>>
>>17533520
I'm sure they will be extremely reliable; if the fuel economy is 20 mpg, I'm sure these turbos will last at least 200k miles. I bet these turbos aren't even close to reaching peak power; I imagine with the Accord and CTR you can get 350 hp with a reflash.

Repairs will be more complicated.

I actually started getting Accords because I needed the room when I was still delivering newspapers; now that I'm no longer doing that, I'd much rather own a Civic. I don't travel with people, so there's no point in having a CM5, now, and I'm no longer used for errands at Papa John's, so I just bear with it and make the best of it.

I think it meets those requirements. It's one of the higher horsepower 4 cylinder Hondas you could get from the 90s. It's basically Honda's GT car of the time without getting an Acura. Has big comfy seats, tons of interior room, 200hp, and easy to work on because FWD 4 cylinder.

make sure to take care of one if you buy it, it's an easy first car but if you don't take care of it, it won't take care of you

it does match your requirements and as long as the /transmission is cooled using a nice fat oil cooler if it's an earlier 5th gen automatic/ you should be doing ok

great price, I'm curious what's under the hood

for the paint and cosmetics being like they are at that age and price from the pics, that looks p good

my only concern is unknown mechanical problems or some kid slapping shit into the engine bay thinking it makes the car run better

the transmission should be smooth when driving and shifting, and shouldn't slip (slip when you go from one gear to another, the engine either revs unnecessarily or takes way too long)

the little key slot in the front odometer area, there's a square. that should be green.

the oil in the car shouldn't be empty af, the dude should be maintaining it, esp at 145k

I like the paint color, and the interior is cheaper to replace, not being beige like mine.

Not that anon, but if you're not too good with cars I would suggest taking it to a mechanic, and if he for you to take refuses walk away. There's something wrong with the car that he doesn't want you to see. Ask your mechanic to put it up on a lift and check for leaks, also check to see how the boots are, and the motor mounts.

>can i ask him to drive with me to a mechanic to check it out?

some people will, some people are jews

if not, do your absolute best to assess any issues with the car, and if you can, check under the hood.

in that pic is my engine bay

red hooks up to a stock black tube that clips to a black air filter box. the air filter shouldn't be dirty. that's a sign of bad maintenance

yellow is the distributor cap. that shit can leak and it's in charge of firing the spark plugs. you can fix that if it's leaking but it shouldn't be trashed

green, those areas can leak oil too. these fixes are cheap to do yourself (all the seals on an engine aren't expensive on the hondas, really) but are somewhat time consuming and a little hard without basic tools.

blue is oil dipstick obv, check that shit for sure

At least someone's kept a sense of humour about it.

Why that Civic wasn't sent to a junkyard is beyond me. How it didn't crumple, fold or break apart while being towed to various locations is also beyond me. How it didn't catch fire from tinfoil' fuses, overpowered fuses and home-brew wiring attempts is also far beyond me. The chance that this car still exists today is astronomical.

This Civic has proven to me that it doesn't want to give up, so I won't give up either.

pic related taken the day I bought my fa5. Just realized it had been two years as of July 11th. First time in my life I bought anything over $1500. I remember driving it around and thinking how cool I was to be in a "rare" "sports" car. Fucking cringe, kek. Still love the car though

>>17537201
>Have you done any troubleshooting lately?

honestly, no lol. the car has been running fine, so for now I'm just pretending there's nothing wrong with it. I'll be back up in the garage in two weeks and plan to pull the spool valve assembly to see what's going on. I'd work on it at my apartment, but the lot is way too crowded and busy to safely get under a car.

I know the k24 came with it's original assembly and it leaked from day one. I took it off and reinstalled it two times that I can remember to try and fix the leak (it is fixed now), but wasn't smart enough to change to filter while i was at it. i researched to error code a little bit and it seems like either the valve filter or the oil pressure switch are usually the culprits. All the grounds seemed fine

>>
>>17542967
As far as I know, yeah. The double wishbone suspension naturally gives the car more camber when lowered, which is why double wishbone cars are popular with stancefags. All they gotta do is cut the springs and they're ready.

No idea how my Koni/GC combo would feel compared to the Skunk2 or K-Tuned suspension but I quite like it. It's not $1200 tier but I'd say it's around $700 to $800. Only bumps I don't like with it is the badly uneven concrete slabs. I don't think any aftermarket suspension could make that feel good, though.

>>17543048
Just do a little bit at a time. It's all worth it in the end I think. What car is it?
>>
>>17543074
Maybe I can replace my shocks with monroe and do the rest later
is there anything to note when working on all corner schoks?
>>
>>17543088
Not much to note really. If it's like my EG, it's a dead simple process. Two nuts up top, one on the bottom, move the wishbone (in front) to the new shock, reverse the process. Best route would probably be to pop off the lower ball joint.
>>
>>17543103
are any of these needed;

breaker bar
torque bar
antiseize?

>>17543121

funny you mention that...
>>
>>17543074
yeah, i should have said my 1200 figure was specific to the coilovers for the 8th gen chassis. 700-800 sounds about right for an eg. in fact, I'm pretty sure k-tuned makes a k1 street for that gen for about $800-$900.
>>
>>17543139
>>17543139
Wew yeah I'd definitely give that a good soak in PB Blaster and let it sit before you try getting it with a breaker bar. What sucks about ball joint nuts is that the ball joint likes to spin along with the nut so getting it off can be a pain.

ACTUALLY since that upper control arm isn't wrapped around the spring, just pop that off instead. That should give you the room you need to get the suspension out without dealing with the headache of ball joints. Out of all the work I've done myself, ball joints are the worst. The threads are super fragile.
>>
>>17543156

honestly, the skunk2 coilovers almost completely spoil the performance of the car. Yes, I can zip around cloverleafs with barely any body roll, but even minor blemishes in the road send the front end bouncing like a fucking kangaroo. The part that makes me rage the most is that there are very few circumstances where I can put the power down smoothly. Not good when there's bumps in the road - at 3/4-WOT after every bump I can feel the loss of traction/acceleration. Can't blame skunk2 though - All of it's on me for being cheap. live and learn I guess. I'm super pumped about the K1's - they're probably going to make the car much more enjoyable

Save your money and buy something proper (i.e. don't go the cheap route).

Even if you get a D15 Honda engine and boost it (you can get a full turbo kit for less than $1,000) it won't be worth it, especially if you plan on running it at high PSI.

So the aftermarket radio in my civic went out. Fuses are fine, no idea how to check the relay, everything seems plugged in properly. Some weird issues with power windows, headlights seem dim, but car starts just fine.

Any ideas? alternator? Battery?
>>
>>17549685
It's so funny to imagine you sitting here for hours waiting for him to reply instead of fucking googling it.
>>
>>17549691
Double check the fuses. The radio went out in my '00 EK, turns out one of the fuses were dead but I didn't catch it the first time I tested it. Couple weeks later I checked again and found the dead fuse.
>>
>>17549691
Does your 12V plug still work? If it's like my EG, both the radio and that are on the same fuse. Your aftermarket radio might also have a fuse on the back as well.
>>
>>17549712
>>17549704
The 12v works. I the ACC fuse (the one for clock and radio on mine) looks fine, tests fine but only the radio is out. I guess i'll have to pull it out and check the back for a fuse.
>>
>>17549722
If they're both on the same fuse I can only guess the fuse on the back of the radio is out, or the radio itself is blown.

I am thinking of putting a d16 in but can find fuck all information on fitting the twin carbs onto d16 engines online.

Don't want to fuck around with an efi conversion so it's either put in another d15b4 or convert a newer engine to carby.

Finally got my shifter bushings installed in the wagon. I ended up just buying a cheap aluminum offset shifter that was a little longer than my old short throw. So much of an improvement over the floppy dick shifter I was accustomed to. I'm still getting used to the fact that neutral has a particular spot though lol.

>Pull up to gas pump
>do my business and get back in my car
>Start it up
>letting out clutch and pop it into what I thought was neutral
>lurches forward and stalls
>do it again
>lurches forward and stalls
>lol fuck my life
>Look over at the car next to me and this middle aged woman is just sitting there laughing staring at me
>I just grinned at her while laughing back and putt putted my way out of the lot

I still feel like a dumbass after that. Its really like having a new transmission. The poly bushings make it feel so crisp and my heel-toe and just general shifting feels so much better.

I also found out that who ever had my car before me was even more of a fucktard than I thought.
The short shifter he had installed didn't even have the fucking brass bushings on either side of it so it made it even floppier.
>>
I drove a couple hundred miles in my car on the highway and after I got to my destination my car kept rev jumping at idle. Had to turn it off and on and it would stop jumping, but happened for a few rides until it stopped. Didn't happen after the drive home.
>>
>>17549885

Just wiggle the shifter, if you can move left to right freely then you're in neutral. My mom really over exaggerates this when she drives my car, like she's choking a rabbit to death and needs to break its neck.
>>
>>17550097
>tfw i can wiggle it freely left to right in all gears

I really need to swap that linkage. kek
>>
>>17550097
I actually did wiggle it but I guess I was just on the edge of being in gear and it just kinda sputtered and died. In time, I know I'll figure it out. It may be a honda thing but my car likes to have the clutch eased out and does not like to just be thrashed without having the pedal fully engaged to the floor. My buddy who grew up driving a 03 Jeep Liberty scared the shit outta me when I let him take it for a spin.. He kept just dumping the clutch in every gear and it rocked around like hell. Told him he just needed some finesse but I have yet to let him drive it again lol

>>17550099
Mine still has that play. I can swing it about 2 inches either direction in neutral but since the bushings are nice and new it doesn't flop around at least or maybe thats just because its in the neutral gate. I'm only slightly above car retarded at this point but I'm making progress lol
I still can't stress how nice that feel is for everything to finally be nice and solid. I never knew what I was missing desu
I checked that little Ujoint(?) on the linkage and it has just a little play on mine as well but not enough for me to worry about it.

My linkage does has a tendency to kinda rub my exhaust in 1st and 2nd but I'm not really gonna worry about it right now. I'll probably get a new system in the near future and see if can't get it routed just a quarter inch to the left further to give it a little more clearance.

>>17550095
IACV? Thats usually what springs to mind when I hear about up and down idle.

>>17550129
Yeah I've got all new bushings but my U joint is as loose as it can possibly get. Replacing that will make it feel like new. Does your shifter move up and down at all? Might just need a new shifter ball seat. Mine was completely shattered so it pretty much rested on the exhaust.
>>
>>17550144

I reused the old one so that may be the case. It seemed to be in decent shape when I pulled it out though.
I just think whoever did the catback didn't put a lot of forethought into it getting in the way of things.

Once I had the shifter rod itself seated and fastened back in from underneath I had to unhook the exhaust hanger and basically hold on with one hand pulling the whole system lower and pull the linkage itself back up and over with another hand so I could get the rod bolted up the linkage.

I do have to say I absolutely hate trying to work on anything in the driveway even with jackstands I feel like impending doom is around the corner at all times.
>>
>>17550144
I'll have to check in the morning but I don't think theres any play up and down on the shifter itself.
>>
>>17550162
Wouldn't be surprising if the exhaust wasn't even meant for your car. I know mine didn't even line up with the bumper cutout and it was always getting hit by the rear LCA. A new Yonaka designed for my car fixed that right up.

>>17550166
Yeah it should be obvious if it's broken. I was able to lift my exhaust and it would just fall down if I let go of it. I remember hitting a big bump with my exhaust and that huge bang traveled into my shifter and hurt the hell out of my hand since it was resting on the exhaust.

Civic 8 Type-S.jpg

Hey /hg/

Last saturday I bought a 2009 Civic Type-S (Pic related, please don't add her to the collage, I really need to make a better photo than that) and during the return trip I realized I've been doing a lot of gear skipping to save fuel, (2-4-6, in towns mainly) like if I was driving my semi. My father tells me that doing that damage the gearbox but you do it all the time when driving a truck so why wouldn't it work with a car (if you skip at the right RPM ofc), so is gear skipping bad for cars ?
>>
>>17550239
I've thought about that myself but I'm not too sure. Maybe it's bad for the synchros? I'm sure somebody here would know. Nice spacecivic, bro.
>>
>>17550245
>Maybe it's bad for the synchros?
Surely I should have heard some crunching sounds if I messed up the synchros, no ?

>Nice spacecivic, bro.
Thanks man.
>>
>>17550291
I'm sure it's fine but you know how it is with cars, there's a million ways to "wear out" things. Though when I got my car third gear would grind when going to it from second in a higher RPM so I remedied that by doing a 2-4-3 shift which stopped the synchro grind. Though soon after even fourth gear was doing it so I ended up just getting a brand new transmission. No idea if my 2-4-3 shifting was the reason behind it, though.
>>
>>17550239
>Gear box
>Designed to change gears
No it will not do any damage, it's their job, it will save on everything as long as like you said, change at the right rpm, otherwise you will put more strain on the clutch.
Don't do what I do, over >>9,000rpm in 2nd then into 5th.
5th can get me around town at 25mph and upto 130mph but still, 2-5 not good.
>>
>>17550320
I never skip more than one gear so there's that.
Except for emergency engine brake, then it's 6-3 or 5-2.
Thanks for the answer.
>>
>>17549747
Is yours electronic or vacuum?
>>
>>17550239
You're fine, as long as all your shifts still fall within the regular rev range.
>>
>>17550239
Nah it's fine.

You need proof btw random Honda pics don't just get added
>>
>>17551296
Okay, what kind of proof ?
>>
>>17551328
See: >>17530215
>>
>>17550239
It depends on how much you are reving it out to. If you are reving it to 6k in 2nd and shifting into 5th, you are doing damage to your synchros.

If its normal driving it will wear the synchros slightly faster but it really wont do much damage and is ok to do

>>17550307
You were using the 4th gear synchro to slow the engine speed down before putting it into 3rd. You can get the same effect by lightly holding it into 3rd until it pops into place. Going from 4th to 3rd is less dramatic than 2nd to 3rd so thats likely why it slipped in. Basically what you did was unnecessary. but yolo new transmission
>>
>>17552929
Yeah I tried a few things and even read that intentionally grinding the gear lightly would stop the 3rd gear grind. It actually did for a few days before it returned. No fucks given though. I've had my Synchrotech for a year and a half and it's still perfect. I assume they used their own improved gears inside. My buddy with his OEM transmission said his first gear doesn't sound straight cut like mine. Said mine sounds like reverse.
>>
>>17552929
>If its normal driving it will wear the synchros slightly faster but it really wont do much damage and is ok to do

That confirm what I thought, thanks !

To be honest, I'd avoid all Honda automatics from 2001 and on. They seemed to lose their shit, and almost every Honda made immediately after 2000 had a glass autobox. Not sure about the CVTs, though. I'd treat them like normal autos.

1st gen hybrids were the EM ones, right? They had kickass gauges.
>>
>>17555104
My EK automatic trans didn't start fucking up until it hit around 310,000 miles. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
It wasn't necessarily hard to fix, just had to take it apart and rebuild it, plus changed a few other things like the speed sensor that caused it to shift erratically.

I've always wanted to upgrade the intake and exhaust system, as well as get the computer flashed, but I don't think the slight increase in performance would be worth it since the engine is built for reliability, not performance; I would need to get a cylinder head from an Acura TSX or TLX to get any significant performance improvement, but I don't want to touch the engine itself.

Not to mention it's only an automatic.

No, what I've been doing is contemplating whether or not get performance brake rotors, but I don't think it would make any improvements on my braking, and I don't know if there's enough clearance to get larger ones and I'm not planning on getting another set of wheels for the car.

Otherwise, buy a shit box crx/civic and mod that.

I checked with him and he said he's gonna get some clear on it later this week. Should look great.

Other friend was offering to metal flake paint my valve cover a while ago and I might do it. Was thinking black with red flakes?
>>
>>17558202
No. It's the acceleration. Say you're going 60 mph down the road and then stop in .2 seconds because you hit a brick wall.

Now say you're going 60 mph and get into a crash and you stop in 10 seconds. Both times you had the same amount of kinetic energy, but you only died in the first example.

What kills you is the change in velocity with respect to time. ΔV/Δt which is commonly known as acceleration.

If you hit someone head on, it's the same problem only worse.
