Reposting request for advice:
bike seems to chew out battery every couple of weeks. Today I did tests: no parasitic load, alternator should be giving 13.5-15V at battery at 5k RPM, is giving only 12.6. I tried alternator connection pins to R/R, all tested well above required voltage. Stator coil continuity is OK.

Should I disassemble the rear fender and see if it's the R/R or is it definitely the R/R?

Also recommend me some conductive lube for a shitty horn connection. I heard something about a copper grease ages ago but I don't know if that's what I need (to make a connection more reliable).

>>
>>17529079

Well, what test did you do?
>>
>>17529109
I've not done any test at all, I got a new card in the post and I think DVLA may have given me a full bike license by mistake.
>>
>>17529114
so you never did any motorcycle test, ever? not even A2?
>>
>>17529121
I did A1 a while ago.

>>

>>
>>17529114

There is a version of an A license you get with a car license which allows you to ride trikes, it's probably that, mine has a similar thing but I'm only on A2.
>>
>>17529148

Man I wish I had that happen, fuck this bullshit A2 license.
>>
>>17529174
well there is probably a legal obligation to tell DVLA, and my license could just be revoked at any time because of this mistake, so idk if its actually worth it. If there's an accident and somebody makes a claim on my insurance and its found out my license was issued by mistake then that could be bad really really bad.
>>
>>17529192

Yeah I would tell them, if you're very lucky they might let you keep it but I doubt it.

holy shit just realised what this mistake is, I tried my mod 2 test and failed it on 27.06.17, and as you can see in the picture in >>17529079 my full bike license starts on 27.06.17.

The examiner failed me, but DVLA has issued me a full bike license anyway.

As far as DVLA/DVSA/governmnt is concerned, I have a full bike license.

Is it really necessary to tell them then? I guess its a risk I have to decide if I'm willing to take.
>>
>>17529302

If you know they failed you and you then decided to go out with the given license anyway, they'll probably use that to prosecute you should anything happen. Tempting as it is, it's probably a good idea to get it sorted.
>>
>>17529322
its tempting because I keep failng due to nerves, if I just get my big bike, ride it and practice on it (and take it very, very easy of course) then there's absolutely no pressure on me during the test.

I might be riding a month or two without a legitimate license so not that long (even though actually it is technically legit but could just be revoked at any time).
>>
>>17529357
""Lose""" your license. Have a new one made. If that one is fine as well, I don't think you'll get fucked over later. But you're a nervous guy, can you really live the rest of your life in fear of being in an accident and getting rekt in court?
>>
>>17529003

>>
Gyro problems.
Just keep the license you got and buy new bike.
>>
>>17529394
I feel like I may have no choice but to do this because I keep failing my bike test, and I'm unable to book my test anyways as DVLA thinks I already have a bike license.
>>

>super four
>hornet (600f)

No, air cooled fours are actually shit. Air cooled is actually shit.

It's because people that DD bikes want the I4 smoothness/riding experience but without the edgy aesthetics of a modern naked or the hellish riding position and useless subframe of a supersport.

Sadly, honda ruined the "no edgy aesthetics" part. And then they killed the suepr four and replaced it with a twin.

So for all those with taste out there, have fun fitting your CBRs with risers, seats, and luggage that may or may not require extensive modification of bikes and brackets to fit.

Side note, really looking just to get back on two wheels after wasting half the riding season with a carbed SV650 that's spent most of the time since I bought it a few months ago fucking broken.

Its this or a '08 Husky 610SM for $3800 w/5500 miles. I had a chance at buying a '11 BMW G650GS w/9000 miles for $3600 but it sold in 3 days while I wasn't sure whether to do it.

Well the next step is to see what book price is on all....then see what all examples in the area are selling for...then go look at in person and see how well they have been maintained...check stuff like seals/rubber/cables and all wear items chain sprocket brake pads etc. Look at color of oil. Chicken strips/rider age and maturity can be good indicators of how beat the bike has been. inspect to make sure no shenanigans are afoot and them pick your pleasure after talking them down a little. Personally I have found it worthwhile to go to more depressed markets to save money on a bike but the tradeoff is time and travel expenses but you can potentially save lots. having said that I think the lower mileage kwak would be a nice ride...pretty decent bikes. the husky looks like fun but you know what you want better than me just throwing some stuff out there

This next weekend will be the third in a row with mid 100s in Norcal.

Could we have our low 90s back PLEASE.
>>
>>17530067

I don't know what I want and I'm not looking serious enough. I'd be happy to be on two wheels on anything bigger than a 250/300. Honestly just want something I can get on and ride anywhere without worrying. Only real requirement is fuel injection (carbs are okay if its a single carb) and that it's built in the last 10 years.

>>17530040
I already have a '99 SV650, it keeps breaking. Since I bought it in February I've had:

>Leaking fork seal I was at least able to fix using a fork tool (was a bit of rust trapped in the oil seal from a rusty fork c-clip)
>Had to walk it home after it wouldn't start in high 30s temperatures.
>Fuel leak from a clogged petcock (bought aftermarket one on eBay that cracked a few months later dumping all the fuel out inside my garage
>Stripped Caliper Threads (had to buy new caliper after helicoil wouldn't hold)
>Carb issues (wouldn't run right and kept missing, rebuilt the carbs and couldn't get it to run right, bought new carbs for $100 and synced them and still runs a little bit rich but can't be fucked at this point)
>Dragging brakes (current issue, can't get lever pressure so I'm gonna try to rebuild my master cylinder myself and if not go to a shop because I have no patience anymore I've bled through half a bottle of fluid already)

I just wanna fucking ride man. I want something I can fucking get on and ride and at most do oil/tire changes to. Like fuck, I already have enough projects. I had a '09 KLX250 I regret selling now because I didn't do more than oil changes and a rejet to that bike.

a lot of those are just regular old bike issues. fork seals, carbs a shit, stripped bolts from DIYers and bad mechanics, corroded to shit fueling bits, seized/spongy brakes, etc.

keep that in mind if you ever want to buy another 90s/early 2000s memebike

The 610s have 2 issues, cam chains stretch out about every 15k miles and the capture cups in the clutch basket for the " spring cush " drive are soft and hammer themselves to death, Indy on ADV rider used to make a hardened set for $60 that would last forever but he doesn't do them anymore. Other than that, solid bikes.
Take a peek over at CafeHusky.com in the 610 section if you want to read up on them more.

Smoother throttle response

EFI with throttle by wire has a slight delay
EFI with mechanical throttle bodies has instant response followed by a kind of "kick" a split second later as the computer registers that it needs to add fuel since there's extra air
>>
>>17530750

And when you roll on the throttle and feel the main jets "kick in"... nothing like it on a FI bike.

Whew learning to ride is fun and scsry.
Went to second gear today, achieved 20 mph.
Not a lot but to me it was terrifying.
...yet it was fun too.
I only need to work on my braking. I walk it just a little instead of coming to a complete stop.
Anyone have tips?
>>
>>17531349
Smooth braking comes with getting a handle on the balance of the bike. Experienced riders can come to a full stop under braking and not have to put a foot down for a second or two. You'll get the hang of it, it's just riding and riding some more.

The first couple times you go 40mph+ will feel fast as fuck, it's a whole new feeling. Then you get used to it and you end up speeding everywhere even though it feels like you're going slow.
The stopping and balance will come in time. When making gradual stops, you can use both brakes as you usually do but then let off the front brake and use the rear the rest of the way as you're coming to a stop. It'll help smooth it out.

I just found out today that most motorcycle dealerships in the US don't let you test drive any motorcycle on the lot.
If you want to buy new, you have to do so without even riding around the parking lot - this seems insane to me.

Did any of you guys buy new without test driving first? Ever successfully return a motorcycle you didn't like the feel of?

I guess I'm gonna be buying used for the foreseeable future...
>>
>>17531760
This is not true, it always feels slow
>>
>>17531773
This is not true, if you are serious about buying a bike they will let you rest ride it, anyone saying they don't is probably a kid who just got his license and thought it would be cool to go test ride an S1000RR, and the salesman promptly told him to fuck off. I've gone on test rides and every dealer I've ever been to has offered test rides.
>>
>>17531773

Dealers have demo days and dealers will let you test ride if you sign a waiver, you crash or damage the bike, you buy.

Are they gonna do an eye test on me to make sure im not some teenager without money or something? Seems like a really hard line to say that they do not ever allow test drives over the phone.
>>

I bought my fz09 without a test ride. No regrets.

The only dealership here who does test rides is triumph, everyone else you have to catch their demo days once or twice a year or you are screwed.
>>
>>17531820
Go to the dealer, sit on some bikes, talk to a salesman and ask questions, I guarantee you they'll let you take it out if not offer before you can ask. Asking on the phone makes you sound like a kid fishing for joyrides.

The thing is I have enough cash to buy a (relatively inexpensive) new bike without financing. I dunno if I want to do this whole jerkoff dance just to ride on a bike which I may or may not want to purchase afterwards.

Although, in retrospect, many of the CL ads which I've answered to in the past that wanted 'cash in hand for test ride' didn't actually put up any fuss over a reasonable request to ride down the street.

I guess I really just hate sales people and how much they fuck with you even when being able to test the goods is a set expectation. Just one more reason to buy used.

Wrong

A trike is what fat old guys drive because they think it looks cool.
THIS is a motorcycle with a tub and 3rd wheel bolted to the side that fat old guys drive because they think it looks cool.

Four bolts, unplug a cable, pull a cotter pin and remove the sidecar driveshaft is all it takes to go solo.
I've considered doing it, but I don't want to deal with the hassle of aligning it back correctly. Plus, the leading link front fork would drive really weirdly, and my tires wear more on the left side due to the built in lean of the bike

Adventure bikes are made to be comfy. They are made to absorb some bumps and carry lots of luggage. Dual sports are made for off-roading with long suspension travel, but they aren't made for carrying luggage or riding long distances. They are less comfortable (seat, wind) and lighter.
Trail riding and twisties require very, very different things from bikes. You likely won't find one bike that can do both well.

Get one, and work out how much road performance you're willing to sacrifice.

"Technically," in the most vernacular sense, a dual sport is a dirtbike with lights. ADV are faired. The previous commenter is an elitist prick. You are allowed to like things.

>>17532113
VW makes trikes. A sidecar handles differently, so it's not considered the same thing.
>>
>>17532130

>>
>>17532130
Where did I say he's not allowed to like things? I just said that due to the very different priorities placed on off-roading bikes vs. adventure bikes, no specimen of one type will do the other's job well. Yes, you _can_ tour on a dual sport, but it'll be pretty uncomfortable. You can make it comfier, but you'll sacrifice off-roading ability. If you want to also go through twisties quickly (this is a third thing!), things get complicated. You want a firm suspension for twisties to maximize feedback about the grip levels, but that will make it less comfortable and reduce grip on bumpy roads. High mass means less susceptibility to crosswinds, but also higher stress on the suspension. Smooth road tires are shit on loose ground, knobbies are shit on paved roads (when you're trying to corner).
It's better to get two or three bikes for these very different jobs, rather than trying to compromise and ending up with a bike that doesn't do ANY of these things well.

Nope.
>A wheeled vehicle that moves independently, with at least three wheels, powered mechanically, steered by a driver and mostly for personal transportation; a motorcar or automobile.
A motorcycle pulling a trailer isn't a single unit, it's two units that are using a temporary linkage. The motorcycle and the trailer are distinct objects. The motorcycle is not a car because it has less than 3 wheels, the trailer has less than 3 wheels and does not move independently nor is it powered mechanically or steered by a driver.

A sidecar is not a trike because they handle completely different
A proper sidecar has the third wheel roughly centered compared to the other 2 and is not powered
A sidecar requires a "monkey"
A trike has a phisical "speed limit" before it capsizes
You can lean a sidecar
You can drift a sidecar

noun: tricycle; plural noun: tricycles
1.
a vehicle similar to a bicycle, but having three wheels, two at the back and one at the front.

A sidecar does not count as a wheel in the back because a sidecar is a separate entity that can be unbolted you dense fag. If the side car was unable to be removed from the motorcycle then it would be a tricycle but it can be removed so it is not a trike.

Quick, post sidecars to trigger the trikefag
>>
>>17532193
A motorcycle with a sidecar is a trike because trike is short for tricycle and tricycle means a three-wheeled vehicle.
A sidecar does NOT require a "monkey". You can ride a motorcycle with a sidecar without a passenger in the sidecar.
You can lean and drift trikes, too.

>>17532194
It takes literally 30 seconds.

>>17532198
A motorcycle with a sidecar is similar to a bicycle (it has two wheels in one plane, a steering axis within the plane of those two wheels, it has a rider's saddle), and it has two wheels in the back and one in the front.
A sidecar, unlike a trailer, is not intended to be attached and removed on-the-fly; de-/attaching it requires tools and a suspension setup which means when attached, the sidecar should be considered part of the same unit.
>>
>>17532194
to give an answer to your original question, I'm currently trying one called simply "Motorcycle Weather". Its gimmick is that it allows you to set min-max thresholds for temperature, chance of rain and wind speed, so it can put a picture of a car or a bike as appropriate next to the day. Let me rephrase this. Eggs existed before chickens. Therefore the rhetorical idea "chicken v egg" is inherently flawed.
Tricycles are fundamentally three wheeled machines. Therefore a motorized bicycle with a wheeled attachment is not a tricycle. Because that is an attachment.

I'm out of pictures of trikes, but at this point you have to be intentionally acting obtuse. Stop posting, and if this is a serious concern for you, take a hard look at your life.

It's a sidecar if it's a bike with a seat bolted to the side of it, ie the wheels form a right triangle.
It's a trike if it's just a bike with two rear wheels.

The government has issued me a full motorcycle license by mistake, should I tell them or get myself a bike?

Pros
>don't need to do test
>can finally ride something more powerful

Cons
>£1000 fine for getting caught
>3-6 penalty points
>vehicle seized

Not sure what the legality is around it, as technically I have a legit license, even though I never actually did my test.

Way to show me what's what, buddy.

Not even comparable to this case, because sidecars were clearly invented after bicycles (meaning two-wheeled vehicles, in case you are wondering).
>Tricycles are fundamentally three wheeled machines.
Nice that we agree on this.
>Therefore a motorized bicycle with a wheeled attachment is not a tricycle. Because that is an attachment.
You would be right if the sidecar attachment was supposed to be a temporary thing, intended to be removed on-the-fly like panniers or trailers. They aren't, therefore they are to be considered part of the entire unit when attached.

And furthermore, Wikipedia is not a credible source. For all we know you might have edited the article to say what you want it to.

That claim is not supported by the actual definition of the word tricycle as posted by >>17532198

If you didn't do the test, the license is void. Don't risk it.

Thank you.
My friend has been teaching me to use the front brake so I don't have much experience with the back brake.
During today's session I'll definitely get acquainted with the back brake.

>A motorcycle pulling a trailer isn't a single unit, it's two units that are using a temporary linkage
But I already explained to you that the sidecar isn't permanent and can be easily removed in a few minutes? Goddamn I hate euros

1981 KZ440 LTD. poor thing worked great until I took a wrench to it. Now it's leaking oil and the timing is fucked, been too busy to fix the parts I can.

Honda still has cb1100 that is only about as powerful as cb750 due to honda-street-bike meme displacement inflation, and also very heavy, but it looks nice.
